Chit-chat with legendary News-Gazette columnist and WDWS personality Loren Tate

Loren Tate (moderator) — 10:02 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

Good morning. It's fun to be back at work. Let me hear from you.

B Kessel from Urbana, Illinois — 10:02 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

I love your ideas about selling seating in Section A when the season ticket holders can't or don't show. My question is about Handicapped seating between section A and B. On day one of selling season tickets last year, they told me that handicapped seating was sold out. I should just show up early (like an hour before game time) and turn in my C tickets for handicapped seats. This is what I and most others did. The problem is one of standing around waiting for chairs, which is hard to do when you are handicapped. How is this not illegal, to say that you are sold out (on day one) of handicapped seating when you have lots of flexible seating in the designated places. It was far easier (and cheaper) to get handicapped seating (no stairs) at Madison Square Gardens (for the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament in Nov.) BK-Urbana Illini fan

B Kessel, let me first say that I generally favor filling and selling A Section seats, it was Bill Friend

John M. from Washington, D.C. — 10:04 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

Loren, Since you have seen quite a few of them, what is the best Illini football team and best basketball team you ever saw.

Loren Tate (moderator) — 10:05 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

John M, as for the best UI basketball team, I

Ron from Peoria, IL — 10:05 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

What exactly has Law done to deserve a contract extension? Another mind boggling move by Guenther!

Loren Tate (moderator) — 10:06 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

Ron, it is a mystery to us as well. It seemed to make more sense, after three disappointing seasons, to wait at least another year or two to see where they are headed. At this juncture, they appear to be one of the three weakest teams in the Big Ten in 2010-11. Guenther evidently wants to give Jolette Law a longer leash to see if she can get the basketball program rolling. I don

Jason from Pekin, IL — 10:06 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

What are your own personal expectations of the Football Team this year? If they fall below .500 again, will Zook get the hook?

Loren Tate (moderator) — 10:06 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

Jason, the football team could go either way. The opener with Missouri and the first three Big Ten games against Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan State could impact the remainder of the schedule, which is do-able. Who knows what the team will look like by the time they get to Indiana and Purdue. Last year IU and Purdue thumped them. As for Zook, if Guenther wasn

festus from cornrow, il — 10:07 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

Which goals has the women's BB team achieved in recent years?

Loren Tate (moderator) — 10:07 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

Festus, loved you on Gunsmoke. Are you related to Hawkins? The only goals I

Jam from Paxton, Illinois — 10:08 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

Loren,

Is Coach Law's contract extension related to recruiting or is this a vote of confidence for her from the administration. I seem to remember that she had a huge recommendation from Manny Jackson before she was hired.

Loren Tate (moderator) — 10:11 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

Jam, I

Luke from Bloomington, IL — 10:11 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

Hey Loren - I've read several things indicating that Tis has not really hit the weights until recently. This is really baffling to me. I think the same can also be said for Davis. I don't understand why these guys, who aspire to play professionally, have been so lethargic in their physical development. Is this a failure to motivate on behalf of the coaches? Thughts?

Loren Tate (moderator) — 10:13 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

Luke, all the players are closely monitored, from the day they arrive on campus as freshmen, by the weight training coach. Jim Price sets up weight programs for them, and he sees that they follow it religiously. Tisdale has been a hard worker throughout, both in terms of eating and training, and I don

Dave Collier from Rock Island, ill — 10:13 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

Would you mind telling me what Jolette Law has done during her 3 years here to merit her getting a contract extention?
Beginning with her recruiting and the stampede to leave the program by other players. If i did my job as poorly as she has done hers i would worry about getting fired.

Loren Tate (moderator) — 10:15 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

Dave, I think we pretty much agree that, based on the three-year record, the contract extention didn't make sense. But maybe Guenther sees something in her that others don't. There are may examples, going all the way back to Wooden at UCLA, where coaches needed time to build their programs.

Chuck Cherry from Bloomington, IL — 10:15 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

What are your thoughts on Whitey Herzog's enshrinement into the Hall of Fame?

Loren Tate (moderator) — 10:17 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

Chuck, I like Whitey. I think he is deserving, particularly for what he did at Kansas City, and then at St. Louis. He was a successful manager. He put together a style of play that was exciting.

AlumniSean from Chicago, IL — 10:17 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

Is Jolette Laws contract extension a direct reflection of the timeline for guenther's retirement and him having no desire to make yet another coaching hire?

Loren Tate (moderator) — 10:19 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

AlumniSean, I don't know what Guenther's retirement timeline is. You're correct that he doesn't want to fire-hire any more coaches. But he didn't have to extend Law's contract. She still had two years to go. Now she has four. We should know more about Guenther soon. I don't think Hogan, the new president, will want to start over with a new athletic director. We'll see.

Drew from Bradley , IL — 10:19 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

Going back to the filling the A Section, I have an idea. The side that is shown on Television should be filled with Orange Krush/Students. The side no seen on TV can be filled with the A-Section Season Ticket Holders. Only half of them show up anyway unless we are playing Michigan State or a Top 10 Team. If that doesn't work, ask them to help donate for a new arena and we could call the entire arena "A Section," then all would be happy.

Loren Tate (moderator) — 10:23 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

Drew, I'll leave it up to others to worry about filling the A Section seats or camera angles or sightlines to the scoreboard. I get involved at times because others ask me about them. My only concern is the games. I am always amazed at the issues people bring up. You haul me into these areas at times, but my real interest is the games.

Paul from Sarasota, FL — 10:23 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

Your thoughts on Illinois basketball depth for 2010-2011. Should be a good problem...

Loren Tate (moderator) — 10:28 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

Paul, this upcoming team has good depth. It is a positive but prepare yourself for the fact, as we saw with Legion and Jordan and Simpson and Keller, and to a lesser extent Semrau, everyone isn't going to be happy with his playing time, so the ones who get shorted will probably transfer. What I've seen thus far is that Richardson appears stronger, Tisdale has a lot of effective offensive moves that Leonard can't guard, Cole is much more aggressive and effective, and Bertrand fives the team a third playmaker along with McCamey and Richmond. Good depth, yes. And except for McCamey, the guards who play the best defense will get the most time.

Dennis from McHenry, Illinois — 10:28 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

Do you feel the new president will renew Guenther as AD. I talked with an ex-Illini from the early 90's who raises funds, and he says alumni are none to happy about the state of the football program. He feels the AD has had ample time to get the program producing consistently good teams. What is your take on this?

Loren Tate (moderator) — 10:31 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

Dennis, nobody is happy with the recent results in football...nobody, not Zook, not Guenther, not the president, not the fans, not anybody. The question is: where do you do from here. The outgoing president and chancellor, Ikenberry and Easter, are very high on Guenther, and I'm sure they'll recommend that Hogan, who is just arriving, extend the AD's contract. I didn't agree with Guenther's approach this last year but all we can do now is sit back for a season or two and see if it works. It is not a perfect situation. Fact is, I don't know how the 2012 season could look more gloomy. But that's a long time off and a great deal could change.

Braski from Champaign, Il — 10:45 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

Loren,
How does Guenther continue to collect a pay check with the Mediocrity of the football program under his watch? Football is the engine of the athletic department. Right? He comes from a football background but appears to be inept on hiring the right head coach. When is the U of I Admin going to wake up and send him on his way or re-assign him somewhere else? I hope the new president likes competitive football!

Loren Tate (moderator) — 10:47 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

Braski, you say football is the engine, and I assume you're talking about the finances. Well, Guenther is one of the few Big Ten athletic directors keeping the program in the black. He has not been successful in hiring football coaches. That is a fact. This failure has been offset by incredible additions in facilities and a well-run operation. I don't think he'll leave until he wants to leave.

Dick Kemmerer from Peoria, IL — 10:56 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

This year it appears that Bruce Weber will have plenty of depth. In your estimation take a stab about the number of minutes per game each of the players will average.

Loren Tate (moderator) — 10:56 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

Dick, oh, wow ... I haven

John Russell from Moline, IL — 11:01 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

How is Mike Tisdale holding up against the bigs in Vegas

Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:01 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

We are hopeful to talk to Tisdale today. I asked a question of Jerry Colangelo Saturday morning about Tisdale's performance, and he really didn't answer it. Tisdale was probably in over his head, but I'd assume it was a good experience.

Eli from Champaign, IL — 11:02 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

Is it true that there are some single game tickets on sale for the Northwestern game at Wrigley? Also, when do they mail out season tickets

Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:02 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

As you know, tickets are not my business, and when I tried to call my usual contacts, they are on vacation. So, I'm not aware of NU-UI tickets on sale without buying the Wildcat season package, although I heard that several people locally got tickets that they didn't expect. Maybe it's not the sellout Jim Phillips anticipates. We'll see. If I had more time, I could track down this ticket info but I only have 10 more minutes.

Alan from Southfield, MI — 11:03 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

Do you think Bob Blackman would have been more successful at Illinois if he had a different athletic director/administration to support him?

Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:04 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

Alan, I can tell you with certainty that Blackman felt that way, but personally I think he was past his prime in terms of recruiting, and wouldn't have done a great deal better. He had one winning season during a time when Ohio State and Michigan were very good and nobody else was.

Tim from Champaign, IL — 11:05 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

Wouldn't Tisdale look good right now if he was going into his jr. year? That could have happened if Brian C had been around to back up Pruitt, when Tis arrived on campus.

Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:05 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

Tim, don't bring up redshirting. You know where I stand on that. Tisdale should definitely have been redshirted. That is too bad. If Carlwell had worked out, Tis would probably have the extra year.

Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:05 AM on Mon, 07/26/2010

Sorry , I've run out of time. Rossow is kicking me out. Thanks for the questions. See you next Monday. Loren
