Thanks for stopping by. Before we get started, one addendum to today's story on Thursday's WNBA draft. It appears Lacey Simpson (undrafted) will go to training camp with the San Antonio Silver Stars. On to the questions.
Brian from Champaign, IL — 12:57 PM on Fri, 04/09/2010
Tony,
any idea on when Law will fill the open staff position?
Brian,
I'd think it would be soon. Jolette was at the Final Four in San Antonio and I'd presume she would be looking at or talking to candidates there. Don't know why it wouldn't be filled soon, unless she's waiting for someone or something specific.
Andy from Urbana, IL — 12:58 PM on Fri, 04/09/2010
How will the incoming freshman help the team next season?
Andy,
Alexis Burke, a guard/wing from Georgia, is a dynamic scorer who averaged 24 a game this season. She can score from anywhere on the floor, and she might add some backcourt scoring punch. Not clear yet how much she'll play, though, especially with Amber Moore returning alongside McCully, Josil, etc.
The other signee, guard Centrese McGee, is not a strong scorer but more of a defender type who fits Law's mold of athletic players. I'd be surprised if she played a lot next season. We'll see.

Thanks Tony: for the opportunity to extract data from your memory bank. Can Penn fill in adequately for Smith in her 2nd year?Who on the team will pick up the slack for Simpson! By the way she had an excellent season. Great SHOW AS USUAL!
Central grad,
I'm high on Penn. Think she'll be a good player at Illinois for three more years, but she faces a major adjustment next season, obviously, because suddenly she's the focal point of everyone's defensive efforts. How she handles that will be critical. As for who will pick up the slack for Simpson, the player on the roster how is most like her is Adrienne GodBold. She's athletic, long frame, can develop into a defensive stopper like Lacey. It's just a matter of how quickly she can improve.
Carol from Champaign, IL — 01:02 PM on Fri, 04/09/2010
Tony, Thanks for hosting these chats--I was too late last week.
Congrats to Jenna! And, best wishes to Lacey!
Will Jenna, Lacey and Whitney be at the Ultimate Basketball Challenge next week?
Ardith,
Jenna: If my assumptions are correct, the Mystics have nine players who are near-locks to make their 11-player roster. Plus, they have a first round draft pick (center Jacinta Monroe) who they're high on, obviously. So my guess is that Jenna will be fighting for the final spot along with the other draft picks and the team's incoming free agents, the best of which is probably guard Kristin Haynie, a former MIchigan State player. Jenna has a shot, but she'll need to play well in camp. The good part is that Washington has several players who are playing overseas, and those leagues often cut into the preseason portion of the WNBA schedule, so Jenna might have some opportunities that she otherwise wouldn't have.
Lacey: Not really clear. I love her ability and think she'd be a really nice fit as a defender/rebounder type for the right team, but my ability to translate college form to the professional ranks is shaky at best. I've also heard the notion, expressed by Rebecca Lobo on ESPN yesterday, that everyone in the WNBA needs to be able to score, and that's not really Lacey's game.
David from Chicago, IL — 01:06 PM on Fri, 04/09/2010
How is Coach Law doing with Recruiting? I know she had a great 09 class, but haven't heard much with 10 and 11.
David,
I mentioned the 2010 class in an earlier question. As for 2011, she has one oral commit, from Bolingbrook's Taylor Tuck. Tuck is a forward who started for a two-time state championship team. Her younger sister, Morgan Tuck, is one of the nation's top sophomores, and that Bolingbrook program is loaded with talent every year. It's good for Illinois to get its foot in the door to the program.
Freddy Davis from Dallas, TX — 01:08 PM on Fri, 04/09/2010
What can you tell us about Lacey Simpson's free agent options? I can't imagine there are too many open spots on WNBA rosters.
Freddy,
It's an extremely difficult task to make an 11-player roster for any undrafted free agent. Doesn't mean it can't happen, but the odds are stacked against her, so she'll need to do something special in camp, and even that might not be enough. I don't know much about San Antonio's roster at this point, as I just got word today that that's where Lacey is headed. Here's hoping for the best for her.
Jeff from Savoy, IL — 01:10 PM on Fri, 04/09/2010
Any updates on Kelsey Bone's transfer situation? where might she go, and why is she leaving in the first place? sounds like she had a pretty good year at S. Carolina.
Jeff,
Haven't seen anything new on Bone, though I've been working on draft stuff and haven't turned my attention in that area too much the last few days. But I'll stick by my prediction from last week: I think she's headed to an established power. She took a chance on South Carolina (a school that her mother didn't want her to attend in the first place) and apparently didn't find the situation to her liking. I'm guessing she noticed that her Texas schoolgirl rival, Baylor's Brittney Griner, received all kinds of attention in March while leading her team to the Final Four. Carolina didn't make any postseason tournament.
Michelle Scrothom from Chicago, IL — 01:12 PM on Fri, 04/09/2010
I know you feel strongly about this, but don't you think the atmosphere of games suffers by having them at the Assembly Hall? While the program is growing/rebuilding, I would like to see a smaller venue like Huff.
Michelle,
I think the atmosphere suffers at the Assembly Hall because the team hasn't been very good. You put the last seven or eight UI teams in Huff and that atmosphere wouldn't be any good there, either. If you win, people show up. If people show up, the atmosphere is good. If you put the 1,200 fans who regularly show up at the Hall into Huff, you still have a rotten atmosphere that would have no impact on the outcome whatsover. Would that make it more fun for the fans? Yeah, I suppose it could. But what people tend to forget is that the late-90s teams that played at Huff won because they had Ashley Berggren, and Nicole Vasey, and Tauja Catchings, and Casey Leonhardt, etc. Had they played in the Hall, they'd have won there, too, and no one would have said a word about the atmosphere. Then there are all of the ancillary reasons for playing at the Hall, which would take me forever to list.
The reason Illinois hasn't been very good the last decade doesn't have anything to do with the atmosphere at the Hall. It has a lot to do with players, coaching, etc.
Tiger Woods from Augusta, GA — 01:17 PM on Fri, 04/09/2010
this is a non basketball related question, but who is your favorite non-basketball athlete to watch (either live or on tv) and why?
Tiger,
Not you.
I'd probably go with Rachel Alexander, a 4-year-old filly who was named Horse of the Year in 2009. (If you can't tell, I'm a big horse racing fan.)
roach from monticello, il — 01:19 PM on Fri, 04/09/2010
Roach,
Illinois certainly hopes so. It's too soon to say, but I'm sure Illinois feels good about its chances to land Morgan, especially now that Taylor is in the fold. Both have been to many UI games in Champaign, and I'm sure you'll see them at more games next season. But getting Morgan will be way, way, way, way, way more difficult than getting Taylor. Morgan is one of the top five sophomores in the country, so to get her you'll have to beat out -- it's safe to assume -- UConn and Stanford and Tennessee and Baylor and Duke and Texas and ... you get the picture. Tough task.
Mattk from Urbana, Illinois — 01:21 PM on Fri, 04/09/2010
Tony, please give us a preview of your Destiny Williams story. Also, should we have any long-term concerns over the status of Brianna Jones?
Mattk,
Still a work in progress at this point and am in a bit of a holding pattern. Still hoping to have that story, which hopefully will better explain exactly what happened during her brief tenure here.

Carol,
It's my understanding that they'll all be at the Ultimate Basketball Challenge.
Here's a 2 part WNBA question:
Now that Jenna Smith's been drafted by Washington, what do you think her chances are of making the active roster?
and
What do you think Lacey Simpson's chances are of getting picked up as a free agent?
Thanks for doing a great job keeping us fans updated on all the IL WBB news.

Gotta run. My 1-year-old just awoke from her nap, and she doesn't sound happy. Thanks for the questions and have a great weekend.
