Since Illinois had a winning record in the Big 10 and still had an RPI of only 75 (no team with an RPI that low has ever been selected at-large), do you think the non-conference schedule will be upgraded, i.e., get rid of teams like Presbyterian (5-26) and SIU-Edwardsville (4-23) and replace them with more competitive teams. Beating teams like that can't help the RPI, can it?
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:04 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
Hi, Jim is on assignment so I'll be here alone. Loren
BIll, I can't explain the RPI. It bewilders me. Illinois' non-conference schedule is vastly better than most of the teams in the NCAA tournament. Some of the teams that Illinois played were part of the Vegas tournament. Illinois playerd 16 games against NCAA teams. That is a lot. The trouble, as it turned out, is that 13 of Illinois' 19 wins came against teams that didn't rank in the top 100. Loren
Gabe de la Garza from The Hood, Yukon Territory — 11:04 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
Loren and Jim, say it with me, "NIT!!! NIT!!! NIT!!! NIT!!! NIT!!!"
Do you think there is a chance that we may start marketing the basketball program to other kids based upon the prospects of NIT appearances? After all the NIT used to be 'the' post season tourney.
I think Illinois should replace its NCAA tourney banners with NIT versions.
What do you think?
In closing, will this get Ron Zook fired?
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:05 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
Gabe, good luck hunting today. But don't shoot Bambi. Loren
Tim from Chicago, IL — 11:05 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
Loren,
Will you ever hold Bruce Weber accountable for the last four disappointing seasons and his numerous recruitment missteps? Bruce gets paid quite well to win basketball games. He has not proven that he can do that. This is the flagship institution of the state of Illinois and the high expectations come with the salary.
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:07 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
Tim, your question is: "Do I think Weber should be fired?"
My answer is quite simply: "No."
Should he be held accountable? Of course. Should he be fired. No. You have every right to disagree. Loren
Chris from Monticello, IL — 11:07 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
Do we know if the U of I looked at hosting their opening round game at a neutral site, perhaps Springfield, Bloomington's new arena or even Peoria? Sounds like Huff would suffice compared to going to Stony Brook. Thanks!
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:09 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
Chris, Illinois tried for neutral sites but couldn't come up with anything on short notice. Like you, I would have loved Huff, but there are problems because it is a contruction area and a wall has been put up inside on the north side. It is a complicated business. Loren
Brian Perkovich from LaGrange, IL — 11:09 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
Hi Loren,
I love to read all of your Illini thoughts. One question, what happened to
Dominique Keller? I think he could have helped in the OT game against Ohio State, but I noticed he never got in the game.
Thanks for the good work,
Brian Perkovich
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:10 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
Brian, we will learn at some point whether Weber intends to play Keller after the incident when Keller refused to pay attention on the bench after Weber pulled him from the Wisconsin game after less than a minute. Keller appears to be a very disappointed senior and the likelihood is that Griffey will get his time from here on out. Loren
Illinigator from newberry, fl — 11:10 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
I wonder how much money the NIT is losing by playing this game at Stoney Brook? Isn't their a location in Illinois where the game could have been played that holds more than 1600 people?
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:11 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
Illinigator, like you, I wonder how much money they'll lose. It will be substantial. Too bad they couldn't find a site in Illinois. Maybe they didn't get started early enough on that. Loren
Bruce from Verona, IL — 11:12 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
Was any consideration given to playing Wednesday's game at Huff Gym instead of traveling?
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:12 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
Bruce, Huff is a construction site, parking is a serious problem, and it wouldn't have seated much more than 3,000.But I would have loved to see it. Loren
Russ from DeKalb, IL — 11:13 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
A break in all of the Basketball talk with a football question. The Illini always line up off center before extra points and then at the last minute, run to the center of the field and kick. Do you remember them ever actually running the play from the side of the field??
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:13 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
Russ, they ran it once and, with the official delaying the play, it failed. The idea was to catch the defense off guard, but it didn't happen. Loren
bill from urbana, il — 11:13 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
it is clear that illinois did not win enough or lost too much to get in the ncaa tourney, but why blame it on conference champs that lost their tourneys. Why not lay this at the door step of brooce weber?
There is a reason calipari, self, etc get good players. they let them play without scorn!!!!
Let them play Broooce, let them play!!!!
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:15 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
Bill, I'm not saying Bruce Weber isn't responsible. All I'm saying is that this silly business of bracketology, that goes on for weeks, can't possibly be accurate when we never know how many of the 34 at-large positions will be lost. The upsets led to what I called the Incredible Shrinking Bubble. Loren
dj from richardson, texas — 11:15 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
Loren,
I have asked this question a couple times this year and never really have be given a answer. With the results with basketball program over the last four/five years, how long do we go without real discussion on Weber and his tenure as the coach of this team? One more failed year?
No one seems to want to talk about this but we sure have no problem with similiar discussion concerning Zook?
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:18 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
dj, I'm just one person. Others can present their own ideas. In my opinion, because recruiting has picked up, Weber has several more years before that kind of discussion should take place. That's just me. As I said, I'm just one person and I don't have a vote.
I didn't call for Zook to be fired, but I really did think Guenther was on the verge of doing it. I was wrong. I don't think there is any consideration of that nature about Weber. But, again, I could be wrong. Loren
redgrange77 from Frisco, TX — 11:18 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
Good morning gentlemen. It will be asked many times but why couldn't we have hosted Stony Brook IN HUFF HALL IN FRONT OF 4,000. Surely, we could have done it in a cost efficient manner without disrupting classes and with full security. I think playing this road game Wednesday is another condemnation of Saint Geunther. Did the NIT make a bargain with us to host the next two games if we do win...big if sadly.
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:20 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
redgrange, if you want me to take you seriously, why do you refer to "Saint Guenther." That pretty much establishes, with me at least, that you are unreasonable on this entire subject. I answered the Huff question earlier. Loren
Ben from Madison, WI — 11:20 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
Every team has down years, but the last time we were this mediocre for this long, Lou Henson was ushered out the door. At what point is it fair to demand that Bruce Weber turn things around?
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:21 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
Ben, as I've said several times, Weber is under no pressure from the people that matter, and will have several more years to put Illinois where you think the program should be. It won't be easy because the top four teams in the conference are very strong. But Illinois figures to get better. Loren
Cameron from Jeff City, Missouri — 11:21 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
legends, after we beat stony brook, how do you think we will do against the kent state-tulsa winner?
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:22 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
Cameron, Illinois beat Kent State in overtime last year, and beat Tulsa by 4. A game with either should be very competitive. Loren

Now that it's official -- the Illini have had the worst non-probation four season run in the modern era -- might you consider writing a column comparing the late Henson years and the recent basketball struggles?
Thanks!

Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:23 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010

Kurt from Rock Island, Illinois — 11:23 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
Jim and Loren,
What the Illinois program be like today had Bill Self stayed?
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:25 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
Karl, Self had talent on hand and coming at the time and would probably have sustained it. Recruiting is always the key, and Illinois is paying for several years of mediocre recruiting right now. Loren
Dave from Iowa City, IA — 11:25 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
How does the athletic department not have the Assembly Hall reserved for the possibility of hosting NIT games?
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:26 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
Dave, the Assembly Hall is co-managed by the athletic department, but when the opportunity came for a 7-show circus, a really special event, they had to make a choice. One in the hand is better than two in the bush. It was a gamble, and it makes far more sense, financial and otherwise, to have the circus. Loren
Chad from Charleston, IL — 11:27 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
Why do the Illini have to go play at Stony Brook? I understand Assembly Hall is unavailable, but could they not play at another venue close to home? There are certainly other schools and arenas that could be utilized. Do NIT rules prevent this from happening?
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:28 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
Chad, I'm going to work on this subject for Tuesday's column. I haven't had time to get into it yet, although I understand that it would have been costly to rent another arena. The UI looked into it over the weekend and couldn't line anything up. Loren
Bob from Peoria, IL — 11:28 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
Loren,
Are you still "fine" with that Minnesota loss? I mean, now that we see it's pretty much the SINGULAR BIGGEST REASON we're not dancing?
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:30 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
Bob, I'm fine with the Minnesota loss because I considered it a tough game that either team could have won, and the Gophers had as much right to win as they did in beating Michigan State and Purdue this past weekend. Why is it that everything thinks Minnesota shouldn't beat Illinois? The Gophers are just as good, if not better, than Illinois. Sure, Illinois could have won. But, in my opinion, it was a 50-50 game. Loren
mike from champaign, il — 11:30 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
How would you grade Coach Weber coaching ability from this year? Is his assistant coaches giving him any help at all on the bench?
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:32 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
Mike, I don't give grades. But I assume it would be somewhere in the area of a B. He has players who lack all the qualities needed to win at the high level. The lineup lacks mobility. He got more out of them defensively than I thought he could. Offensively, the team is too reliant on McCamey, but there is no other choice. Weber is operating on a thin margin because of past recruiting disappointments. Loren
Dr. Phil from Orland Park, IL — 11:32 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
Mr. Tate & Mr. Turpin, with your collective experiences, what should the Illini fans expect, as related to field performance, from the two biggest revenue-generating sports, men's basketball and football, at Illinois? With Illinois's history in basketball, better than football, should we expected more this year? Yes, players, ages 18-21, are responsible, but because of age and experience, should not the coaching staff be held more responsible? Thank you for your time.
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:35 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
Dr. Phil, it is OK to have high expectations. Illinois should always seek to be better. But the unspoken question, as with most of these chats, is what do you do when expectations aren't met. For me, we simply have to play it out and try to do better. That doesn't mean we can't blame the coaches. Everybody always does that. The real question is how far do you go before making coaching changes. That is a different question. Loren
Larry from Mahomet, IL — 11:39 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010

Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:44 AM on Mon, 03/15/2010
Lou, Matta has lost five players to the NBA draft, all of whom could be playing now, and has a very thin squad in which four players are vastly better than the others. So he plays them. Not many coaches do it that way, but it is appropriate for Ohio State this year. Loren
