I KNOW TALENT from LOREN'S TOWN, OF MIND QUETIONABLE — 11:04 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
Hello Senator Loren: I have 4 trivia questions for you and Mr.Turpin? Who are the Illini all time leaders in points, rebounds, assists, and steals. Hint, the assist and steal person is the same one. Loren: You could make thousands of dollars at colleges teaching upcoming jounalists about reporting on sports? Your articles compare to the National reads and have more substance.Mr.Turpin, How does it feel to work with super star like Loren?
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:06 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
I KNOW -- Deon is points leader. Assists and steals is Douglas.
I feel humbled, Jim
the truth will set you free from lie alloys, il — 11:06 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
Why are you media giving Law a free pass, she is a loser. Are you afraid that she is black. IF so,shame on you
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:07 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
The truth, we just feel she deserves more time. RAce has nothing to do with it. Jim and Loren
Bill from San Jose, CA — 11:07 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
In Saturday's loss, why did the Illini stop pressing full-court after they cut the lead 57-52 with 3 minutes left? The press was a large part of how they cut into the lead, and then they stopped utilizing it. I don't get it.
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:08 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
Bill, when they reached a point where they didn't want to foul and wanted to make sure the Gophers didn't get a breakaway, the Illini became more conservative. Jim and Loren
Jim Pieschel from Rockford, Illinois — 11:08 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
Loren:
Perfect time to man up.
As I attempted to discuss with you on the WDWS postgame on Saturday, you and I agree on one front. Your treatment of Ron Zook over the last 5-6 months has been spot on. Some have said that you have a vendetta against him. Quite honestly, I don't care. Zook has deserved what has come to him.
Conversely, you go out of your way to protect Weber, and you look beyond foolish.
The caller prior to me brought up an excellent point that no coach in high school, college, or in the pros would EVER argue. When a game is going to be determined by a single basket, you ABSOLUTELY need to save a timeout for the last possession.
Your take on it? You did not see it as a big deal. Here is Bruce Weber, making a tremendous coaching gaffe at an absolutely critical time, and you see no problem with it? The caller was spot on, and in the end, you were bordering on getting personal with the caller.
I followed and reminded you of your need to be consistent. When I mentioned Zook, you respond with, "Are you saying Coach Zook does not deserve it?", or something to that effect. As I started the conversation, I made it clear that I agreed with your position on Zook.
I was merely trying to get you to do the honorable thing and admit that Weber has his flaws too. You simply could not do it. Just pathetic.
So, take the time now to admit it. Admit to the Illini faithful that Weber did in fact screw up by burning that last time out with over 1 minute to play.
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:11 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
Thanks, Jim, apprecaite being called foolish. I agree. I'm in the nuthouse and I'm surrounded by people just like me.
This is just me, and I'm admittedly nutty, but timeouts don't determine games. Sometimes you're better off NOT calling them. Nutty Loren
P.S. Jim, why bother with me when I'm not all there? Why not contact somebody smart like you?
Kendall from Chicago, IL — 11:11 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
Illini seem lacksadaisical, uninventive and unable to adjust to opponent's defense. Why doesn't WEber have any answers or make changes sooner?
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:12 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
Kendall, Weber has answers but it's up to the team to execute. Sometimes the defense stops them, just like Michigan State did against Purdue Sunday. Loren and Jim
jason from chamapign, il — 11:12 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
why would anybody want this team to make it to the tournament...they are a joke and embarrassing to pay attention to.IF half of them transfered i wouldn't be upset at all.tell bruce he should turn on the call in show after the games and let the players hear what a losers and quitters these guys are!!!!
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:14 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
Jason, that is a little strong, don't you think. We're here to try to reason with UI fans. But sometimes it seems that we are dealing with the lunatic fringe. I know that's wrong, but it seems that way. Loren
Bob from San Diego, CA — 11:14 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
If another school were brought into the conference, would they be required to pay a large sum of money to be divided among all preexisting conference schools in the same way that major league teams divide league entrance fees?
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:15 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
Bob, that seems to be what Alvarez was saying ... unless they can bring as much in terms of TV sets and income as they're getting from the Big Ten. Jim and Loren
Marty Hinton from Pinehurst, North Carolina — 11:16 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
Jim & Loren,
While I agree that this is a "split personality" team because of having a singular playmaker and face-up bigs, those bigs bear a lot of blame in addition to the playmaking of the wings. They have to flash hard to the ball against zones, and the "Mike & Mike show" did not consistently do that against Ohio State or Minnesota.
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:18 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
Marty, the UI bigs are not ideal in terms of movement and playmaking skill. Everybody wants them to do something that does not come naturally to them. Davis had a double-double nevertheless. But that first half was pathetic. Jump shooters need their jumpers to go in. Loren and Jim
Adam from Greensboro, NC — 11:18 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
Watching Brandon Paul slash to the hoop with reckless abandon for near miss layups and turnovers reminds me of Jerry Hester as a freshman. Hester eventually controlled his game with great results and I expect Paul to do the same. Agreed?
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:18 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
Adam, we expect Paul and Richardson to be better players in the future. Paul has a huge upside. Jim and Loren
Mark from Champaign, IL — 11:18 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
Can you explain why the coaching staff/team were "happy" with the loss to Purdue? I realize the Illini played with a little more energy, but the main difference was a higher shooting % for the U of I (thanks in part to a couple of lucky 3 pointers by Paul). Otherwise, PU outrebounded, caused more turnovers, had fewer TO's, and shot more FT's. Is that reason for optimism?
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:20 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
Mark, the coach can take whatever position he wants after a game. In past losses, Weber has been criticized for being so negative. He elected to be positive after the Purdue game because he felt it would help the team's confidence for the games coming up. Unfortunately, that didn't work. Actually, how a coach reacts to a game probably has little bearing several days later. Jim and Loren-
Dr. Phil from Orland Park, IL — 11:20 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
Mr. Tate & Mr. Turpin, Good morning. I watched the re-broadcast of the Illinois-Syracuse game this past week on the Big 10 network.
My questions are as follows:
1. What happened to Ervin Small after his problems sent him to jail? Also, what happened to P.J. Bowman and Larry Smith?
2. In your opinion, was that team the most athletic team Illinois ever had? Also, was it the most talented team, since Gill and Anderson were NBA All-Stars, with Liberty drafted high, along with Battle and Bardo also getting drafted?
Thank you for your time for covering Illinois sports, even though I may disagree with a few of your opinions, but just a few.
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:22 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
Dr. Phil, Bowman is a doctor. Small has been out of jail for a long time. Don't know where he is. Larry Smith has had multiple serious problems, but was here a few months ago. He was so huge, I (Loren) didn't recognize him. Jim and Loren
tom from bloomington, IL — 11:22 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
How many more wins does Illinois need to get into the NCAA tourney? One? Two? More?
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:23 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
Tom, we think one of the last two, and maybe another in the Big Ten tournament. But one might do it. There are so many variables. We don't know how others are going to do. We are told it is a very weak bubble. Jim and Loren
JD from Urbana, IL — 11:23 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
Hey Loren,
How would you rate Evan Turner compared to the All-Time Big Ten Greats you have seen?
JD
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:24 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
JD, if he stuck around another year, he could go down as one of the greats. Of course, it depends on how he does in the playoffs. And he isn't likely to stay. It is hard to compare people from different eras, but he is as versatile as they come. Jim and Loren
Groundhogday from Pullman, WA — 11:24 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
I'd like to get your thoughts on the very different approaches taken by Petrino and Koenning. Petrino has evaluated all of the offensive players using film, has a well-defined system he wants to install and is already moving players around to fill gaps. Koenning seems to be taking a much more flexible, wait and see approach with the defensive personnel and scheme (and is deliberately NOT looking at film).
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:26 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
Groundhogday, they haven't been here long enough for us to know very much. Koenning has a particular problem because four of his key players won't be able to scrimmage this spring. Petrino has yet to learn anything about the quarterbacks. It is all guesswork now. Jim and LOren
Kendall, Kenny, Steven,Nick, and Lowell from Chambana, Illin — 11:26 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
I find it frightening that this illini team scored 14 pts in the first half against the gophers. Do you see Bruce possibly changing his offensive philosophy with emphasis on attacking the basket? Go Illini!
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:27 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
Kendall, it's hard to attack the basket against a zone. You need to hit shots. That is the key, and that will be the problem against the 1-3-1 of Ohio State Tuesday night. It is doubtful Weber will change his philosophy. Jim and Loren
Jason from Pekin, IL — 11:28 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
Reading the Peoria Journal Star on Saturday morning, I read the article on the Illini and where Mike Davis seemed more interested in winning the Big Ten Tourney now that Hummel was out and nothing about the regular season. Was this a sign for what happened Saturday Afternoon? Does this fall on Davis, or should the Coaches catch some heat for lack of focus?
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:28 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
Jason, do you really believe his answer to a question along the way affects how he prepares for a game? Loren
Loren Tate (moderator) — 11:30 AM on Mon, 03/01/2010
Sorry, we've got Weber at 11:30 teleconference. Thanks for the questions. Sorry to be so short but we are on a tight leash. Jim and Loren
