Illinois Signing Class chat: 9 a.m. Wednesday

Wednesday February 4, 2009, 9:00 AM

Ask Illinois football beat writer Bob Asmussen about Ron Zook's latest signees.

Moderator: We couldn't wait to get started, so we are starting the chat now.

Thanks for your questions.

Jonathon, Alsip, IL: Rivals.com is reporting that Justin Green is going to Illinois. Please tell me this is true.

Moderator: Jonathan,

I talked to Justin Green last night. The fact that he picked up his phone when he saw a call from Illinois tells me that he is probably on his way.

We won't know officially until his 10 a.m. announcement. But all signs are pointing to Illinois.

It's a huge addition to the Illinois class. From talking to folks in Kentucky, Justin wants to play running back and wasn't getting a good feeling about that idea from Ohio State. The Illinois coaches want him on their team. If he wants to play running back, they will certainly let him give it a go.

He is one of the fastest players in the country. His dad is a coach. His brother played at Ohio State.

Scott, Urbana, IL: Which recruit do you think has the most potential to be a star other than Hawthorne?

Moderator: Scott,

If Justin Green does sign with Illinois, as expected, you'd have to put him right with Hawthorne at the top of the class.

Tony, Urbana, IL: Bob,

where does the class rank nationally? And how does it compare with the other classes Zook has brought in?

Moderator: Tony,

The class is anywhere from the high 20s to the high 30s, depending on which recruiting service you listen to. The late addition of Justin Green bumps the Illini a few notches, but if Kraig Appleton doesn't sign, that will knock the class down a bit.

The class is going to be rated just below the last three Zook classes, but remember that there are fewer guys on this list. And that is a part of the recruiting service rankings that gets overlooked. It's a volume business, so a 25-player class gets ranked higher than a 20-player class.

Kyle, Urbana, IL: any news on Appleton? I know this is the million dollar question lately.

Moderator: Kyle,

What I've been hearing is that Kraig will sign with Wisconsin. We won't know if it's true until later this morning. East St. Louis has a signing day program at the school.

As complicated as his recruitment has become, I won't believe anything until I see the paper being signed.

Alan, Champaign, IL: any big surprises today?

Moderator: Alan,

Justin Green's decision would have to be classified as a surprise. Not to the Illinois coaches. But to the rest of the recruiting world.

He is a Top 100 kid who was headed to a national power. Then, within the last couple of days, he has apparently changed his mind.

Bob, Champaign, IL: Bob,

i know you said that he Green might be given a shot at RB. But with the depth there, might he also consider playing DB?

Moderator: Bob,

Defensive back will always be an option for Justin. But I think the coaches have promised to give him a legitimate look at running back. Given his speed and talent, he looks like a guy who could be a superstar tailback. The only question is his size, but you have to figure he'll bulk up after arriving on campus.

With his dad being a longtime high school coach, Justin didn't rush into his college decision. It's a positive sign for Illinois that Justin endorsed the school by signing.

Tom, Urbana, IL: How big would it be if we were able to sign Green and Buchanan like rumored to be?

Moderator: Tom,

From a PR standpoint and a class ranking standpoint, it would be very big.

But the reality of recruiting is that we won't know how it plays out until at least the 2009 season. If Justin Green comes in and helps Illinois win a couple of games, you'd have to look back at the late switch as a turning point.

Michael Buchanan, a News-Gazette All-Stater, can be a difference maker in college. Maybe very early in his career.

Larry, Crown Point , IN: Rumor has it Demond Dennis running back from Georgia is leaning toward Illinois any truth to this? Also anything on Stokes?

Moderator: Larry,

From what I've heard, Dennis is going a different direction. But you never say never on signing day.

Given that Justin Green is likely on the way and that Bud Golden has already signed, it's hard to imagine another top running back joining the class. But you never know. He has a morning press conference and we will keep you posted.

Moderator: Michael Buchanan's school ceremony is scheduled for 1 p.m. today. He is going to sign with Illinois.

Norm, St Joseph, MI: Who will sign with Illinois today that isn't on the commitment list yet? Not counting Green. Any surprises?

Moderator: Norm,

Are you counting Michael Buchanan on the commitment list? If you are, then I don't think there will be anybody new.

But that could change. There are offers out there and I would hate to guess what an 18-year-old is going to do.

If there are any surprises, we will let you know about them immediately.

The late additions of Green and Buchanan are significant. I'm not surprised about Buchanan given that he was down to two schools. But Green has to be considered an upset, especially when you factor in his brother as a former Buckeye.

Jeremy , Glenview, IL: What do you think is the main reason Buchanan chose the Illini? A few days ago it was looking like Purdue. Do you think the loss of Carradine and Drummond played a role?

Moderator: Jeremy,

I think Drummond and Carradine not being in the class had to have some impact. But I'm guessing the Illinois coaches were telling him all along that it was possible those two wouldn't sign.

Of the two situations, Illinois looks better on paper. Purdue is coming off of a bad season and has a new coach. The quarterback is going to be new and the chances of winning at a high level, at least in the next year or two, look bleak.

Illinois is coming off of a disappointing season, but has a bunch of top players back, including a four-year starting quarterback. The prospects for success look much better at Illinois. That had to go into his decision.

Plus, you have to figure the homestate school pull played a role. He'll have classmates from H-F at Illinois.

Nate, Owensboro, KY: I thought for sure that Stokes was going to Illinois after leaving Tennessee. Is there still a chance he could be coming? Also anything on the Phillips kid?

Moderator: Nate,

There is always a chance, but it sounds like Stokes is going elsewhere. He is going to announce later this afternoon. He did make a visit to Illinois, which means there is a chance. And it's also possible he's waiting, in part, to see what Kraig Appleton does.

I think Ty Phillips is going to sign with Missouri. He might end up being the best player in his class. But there are academic issues that need to be resolved.

Moderator: It's official. Kraig Appleton is going to Wisconsin.

He will make an announcement at his high school in an hour, but the Wisconsin signing day blog reports his letter of intent is in hand.

Kyle, Champaign, IL: Can we all have a collective thank god the appleton saga is over. Time to move on.

Moderator: Kyle,

I'm looking forward to finding out what really happened. I will give Kraig a call soon and see if he will tell me the entire story.

When he was here for the state title game, he sure sounded like he was on his way to Illinois. Something happened between late November and now to change his mind.

An important reminder: Wisconsin is off the Illinois schedule for the next two years. The teams will next play Nov. 26, 2011 in Champaign.

Steve, Champaign Co, IL: What is your take that Illinois admissions is staying firm on academics? Some think we should cave in. I think it is going to help us get to the next level in recruiting with more 3-5 star recruits with great grades/scores (more guys like Scheelhasse).

Moderator: Steve,

It's a really difficult issue for coaches and schools. Of course, the coaches try to get the best and the brightest. That's the first priority.

But not every player is the same academically. Some maybe haven't had the advantages of others in terms of the quality of the education or the support. And there endless examples of athletes who struggled academically early in their careers who turned it around and became outstanding students. The Illinois coaches don't want to overlook those players.

The key, to me, is communication between the two parties and a willingness to look at each player's case. You will have to trust the coaches and the admissions folks want what is best for the school. And helping the football program is part of what is best for the school.

Kyle, Champaign, IL: How about that Green to UI! Awesome coup by Zook.

Moderator: Kyle,

We just talked to Justin's father, Jelly, who is an assistant coach at Male. We will have a story on HQ shortly and will talk to Justin later this morning.

Carl, Cleveland, OH: Now that we have no Apples, can we get some Stokes?????

Moderator: Carl,

I'm not sure that will happen. But given the recent additions of Buchanan and Green, you never say never.

With Appleton gone, it sure opens up the receiver position for another recruit.

Stashu, Tinley Park, IL: Bob, will the offense change after juice leaves?

Moderator: Stashu,

I don't think it will change much. If you look at the quarterbacks beyond Juice: Eddie McGee, Jacob Charest and Nathan Scheelhaase, they are all dual threat quarterbacks. I know people don't think that about Jacob, but he can really run.

Mike Schultz wants to be balanced. And part of that balance can come from a running quarterback. I don't think you will see a classic dropback quarterback at Illinois during the Zook era.

Angela, Geneva, Illinois: Do you think the reporting has been fair about recruits who "rethought" their commitment to Illinois--specifically, recruits who don't qualify due to academic issues. Seems like Chicago area papers love to see recruits pull away from Illinois and go elsewhere (lesser academic schools).

Moderator: Angela,

Chicago papers don't hate Illinois. They just don't cover Illinois. Illinois is very low on the priority list for the Chicago papers, behind all the pro teams and Notre Dame.

Sometimes, you write the information you are given. The Illinois coaches can't talk about recruits until after they've signed, so those stories can't really be balanced.

Jordan, Champaign, IL: Have you heard anything new today regarding Hawthorne's plans?

Moderator: Jordan,

Terry's signing day ceremony is going on right now in East St. Louis. I think he is signing with Illinois and I'm guessing the school will hear from him soon.

greg, columbia, tn.: greg columbia,tn. will negative tactics from notre dame affect this class?

Moderator: Greg,

I wouldn't want to point at one school when it comes to negative recruiting. I think it happens at a lot of places. I plan to write a story later in the winter about negative recruiting with some specific examples this year that didn't involve Notre Dame.

I don't think Illinois was hurt by anything done by Notre Dame.

Mike, Champaign, IL: Bob,

A chat all day? You are a beast.

Are the coaches worried that Terry Hawthorne's letter hasn't come in yet?

Moderator: Mike,

They aren't worried because the press conference is at 9 and they won't get the letter until after that.

Kyle, Champaign, IL: You see the Signing Day blog? How is Hardeman working out despite his significant injury?

Moderator: Kyle,

That's a great sign for Donsay. That would tell me that he is on the road to recovery and has a good chance to be back on the field. He will be a significant contributor if he is able to make a healthy return.

Steve, Champaign, IL: Do you think we'll bring in any more JUCO guys to help shore up the defense, like Minnesota did last year?

Moderator: Steve,

I don't think so. Illinois will use junior colleges to fill specific needs, but won't ever bring in more than a couple of guys.

You only get two years from junior college transfers and if you can't get them in during the spring, it really is a setback. If you can get a high school senior ready to play early, you can get three to four quality years. The way to sustain a successful program is by doing the bulk of your recruiting in high schools and getting a player or two each year from junior colleges. That's the tactic Ron Zook is using.

Mike , Indianapolis, IN: Any chance that Hawthorne follows Appleton right out of Champaign?

Moderator: Mike,

I highly doubt it. We will know soon enough.

Matt, Tuscola, IL: Bob, do you see Jud Wienke following his big brother's footsteps and playing college ball at a Big Ten school?

By the way, did your wife pick out that shirt?

Moderator: Matt,

Great question. My wife doesn't like this shirt.

Jud Wienke is still young. If he develops, he'll have a chance to play college football.

Go Warriors!

Sam, Champaign, IL: Is there another receiver that could immediately take (what was) Appleton's scholarship?

Moderator: Sam,

Je'Ron Stokes would be a possibility. He'll make his decision known later today.

Remember, Illinois has two receivers in the class and a bunch of guys already on campus. Illinois isn't going to take a receiver just to get one. It would have to be a great player.

Joe, Cave In Rock, IL: Besides Scheelhaase, do you think there are any other players with star potential in this class who might/should/will redshirt?

Moderator: Joe,

Loren just walked in and said "redshirt them all."

The coaches will give every player a chance to try to play this season. But if you look at the history of this coaching staff, they don't burn redshirts without giving it plenty of thought.

I'm guessing most of the offensive linemen will redshirt. And I won't be surprised if one or two of the defensive linemen don't play as freshmen. I think Buchanan will play, but maybe they'll decide that Lendell Buckner needs a year to be ready for the Big Ten.

We'll get somewhat of an idea during the summer and an even better idea at Camp Rantoul.

Wade, Wheaton, IL: Bob any news on the spring schedule yet?

Moderator: Wade,

I was told by a parent of one of the recruits that the spring game is April 25. That means spring practice will fill most of April. I'm guessing they won't start until after the end of spring break, which is a week later this year.

Dave C., Champaign, IL.: Bob,

Which recruit(s) do you think we should be most relieved about faxing their leter of intents in?

Moderator: Easy, Terry Hawthorne. He's the best player in the class and there have been rumblings about Oklahoma getting involved. But I think he will sign with Illinois.

Bill Mc, Tuscola, Illinois: What is your feeling on the linebacker position with this recruiting class? Do you see any of the kids recruited at other positions switching to LB?

Moderator: Bill Mc,

Going back to Loren, he just reminded me of the class of linebackers Illinois signed last year.

I think there is a strong possibility Eric Watts will end up at linebacker. And don't forget that Aaron Gress is already on campus. He will play linebacker.

Mike, Urbana, IL: Does any other school have as good as signing day blog as the UI? Think the DIA does a great job with that.

Moderator: Mike,

Great idea by Illinois. This is the first chance for the school to talk about the recruits. By NCAA rule, they can't talk about recruits until they sign. You wonder when the grumps at the NCAA will outlaw signing day blogs.

Nothing better than pictures of nervous Ron Zook.

Tom, Urbana, IL: Bob,

not to sound like Tate here, but if the players arent going to be able to contribute next season, shouldnt they redshirt? Especially Scheelhaase, I think he should redshirt personally and become a better player down the road.

Moderator: Tom,

I'm sure you are much younger than Loren.

I think Nathan will redshirt unless he is the clearcut No. 2 after Camp Rantoul or there are injuries in front of him.

Coaches want to hold back the players when possible. But they also want to make sure they are doing everything possible to win right now. It's a tough call sometimes. And sometimes, the failure to redshirt a guy hurts the program later.

Don, Champaign, IL: Bob,

is the class Zook announces today the final thing? Or is it possible to have a few late signers?

Moderator: Don,

Signing day is just the start. I believe players have the rest of the month to sign letters of intent. After that, they can pick a school without signing. That has happened in the past.

Tyrone, E.st.louis, Il: Do u think we have a running back to replace the power and speed of rashard mendenhall.we need a home run hitter

Moderator: Tyrone,

Justin Green and Bud Golden both sound like they have the potential for greatness. But we might not know that for a year. Rashard Mendenhall wasn't great the day he got on campus. It took him a couple of years to become a top player. But you can't beat Green's speed.

Wade, Wheaton, IL: Bob,

Don't know if you have a feeler for this, but any recruiting shockers in the Big Ten so far?

Moderator: Wade,

I'm guessing Ohio State wasn't giddy when Justin Green went to Illinois. I'll look around the rest of the league in the next hour to see if there are any other surprises.

Rich, Carpinteria, California: A question about the 08 class. What player(s) who redshirted or played sparingly do you think might make a significant contribution to this year's team?

There's a restaurant in Carpinteria named Zookers. When you are out here next with Illini for Rose Bowl, my treat.

Moderator: Rich,

A very generous offer. Count me in.

Start with the linebackers. I think Evan Frierson, Nate Palmer and Justin Staples will all be given long looks in the spring. Illinois needs depth at the position and they will be asked to provide it.

Graham Pocic will have a chance to play on the offensive line. Jack Ramsey will contribute.

And though technically not a redshirt, Patrick Nixon will play if he gets cleared by the NCAA.

Bruce, Urbana, IL: Bob,

what do the coaches do when they are going down to the wire for a recruit? Do they have a pretty good feeling before signing day? Do they just wait until he announces?

Moderator: Bruce,

There isn't a whole lot they can do other than hope. The coaches often get a sense from the player or his family about which way he is going to go.

In the old days, coaches used to go to the high schools on signing day. I was talking to former Minnesota coach Glen Mason, who said he was thrilled when that practice ended. He used to make several stops on signing day. In the nasty Midwest weather, it wasn't always easy.

Will, Urbana, IL: Bob,

can you clear something up for me as there seems to be a lot of confusion on this topic in my opinion. Scholarships are for one year correct? And, generally are renewed after each season? But the coach doensnt have to renew them each season does he?

Moderator: Scholarships are for one year. It's a understanding that they will be renewed. And in practice, they are always renewed for four years.

The school will stand by the agreement as long as the athlete works hard in school, on the field and stays out of trouble.

It would be a bad practice for a coach to not renew a bunch of scholarships each year. Word would get out that was happening and the coach would have a difficult time returning to the high schools of the players who had lost their scholarships.

Tim, Champaign, IL: will the coaches be out on the road again talking to prospects for next season soon? Not just the prospects, but coaches, friends, family, etc. Or have we reached a dead period?

Moderator: Tim,

There is an upcoming evaluation period that I believe starts in April/May. I've been on trips to high schools with Reggie Mitchell in the past. The college coaches meet with the high school coaches and are also able to get some academic information about upcoming seniors.

Colleges can always write letters too. I believe Illinois will make scholarship offers to juniors either later today or very soon. Those will go out in letter form.

Moderator: I just got the word that Terry Hawthorne signed with Illinois. Tommie Hopkins too. Ty Phillips stayed with Missouri.

Dave, Champaign, IL: Bob,

you said that you believe that after the month is over a player can pick a school without signing. Doenst a player have to sign a LOI to be on scholarship? Or can they just enroll?

Moderator: Dave,

As I understand it, once the signing period ends, they simply enroll. I'm trying to remember which recent Illini did this. I know there was somebody during the Ron Turner era.

I don't believe a player has to sign a letter of intent to be on scholarship. But the letter of intent does bind the player to the school. It also is a guarantee of a scholarship.

Wayne Jacob, Freeport, Florida: Bob, I am just here on the computer scanning back and forth with Cassie, Rivals and yourself. How do you compare the quality of players that we have signed (and those yet to sign) to the seniors that have just completed their football years at U of I ? Is this group continuing to give us a step up in talent?

Moderator: Wayne Jacob,

Great question, but one without a clearcut answer.

Honestly, we won't know for a couple of years. On paper at least, it looks like Illinois continues to improve both its speed and athleticism. But it's impossible to say an incoming freshman like Michael Buchanan will be as good as Will Davis. Maybe, he'll be better. It will be fun watching to see it all play out.

In the last week, I've talked to every kid in the class. I'm impressed by their attitude and confidence. I think that is a good sign for Illinois.

Bob, Champaign, IL: will you be going on a recruiting trip this spring/summer with Mitchell again? Have enjoyed those stories.

If possible, could you link them? If not, can email you and have you do it that way.

Moderator: Bob,

No. NCAA rules have made it next to impossible for a media member to travel with the coaches to the high schools. I really enjoyed the trips with Reggie Mitchell, who was beyond gracious. Plus, I thought the stories were interesting.

Here are two of my favorites. http://illinihq.com/news/football/2008/12/22/12_days_and_stories_of_christmas_on_the_road_with_zook

http://illinihq.com/news/football/2008/05/25/to_the_victors_go_the_recruits/

Dave, Pullman, WA: So we lost Barrington (LB)and signed Green, Golden and Fuller (RB). Does this make it more likely that Mikel Leshoure will move to MLB? It seems that most of the returning and incoming LB's are smaller, faster OLB types.

Moderator: Dave,

Nobody at Illinois has said anything about Mikel moving to middle linebacker. Though I think he can play the position, he is still a running back.

It will be interesting to see if they experiment with him on defense in the spring. It won't happen without Mikel being willing to do it.

W, Sullivan, IL: How would you rate Hawthorne coming in compared to Benn when he arrived?

Moderator: W,

They are different. Arrelious is more of a physical receiver. He can fight off a defender and take the ball away. We've seen it time after time. Plus, once he gets the ball, he can break tackles like a running back.

Terry Hawthorne isn't as big or as physical. But he has the speed and leaping ability to make many of the same plays as Arrelious. To me, they are a good match.

Both are hard workers. Benn had an advantage of being here in the spring before his freshman year. To me, he is the best receiver in school history. We might be saying that about Terry Hawthorne in three years. Benn has set a high standard and I'm guessing he has a Biletnikoff worthy junior year before going to the NFL. If he stays healthy, he is a very, very early pick next April.

Peter Borich, Urbana, Illinois: Do you believe, as I, that it is mistake to have given up finding a quality defensive co-ordinator to replace the current co-coodinator system in place. I ran into Coach Mitchell recently and he told me that there really was no problem with the defense last year. He blamed turnovers putting the defense in bad situations and other reasons which made the defense look bad. I was disappointed that, after the Defensive Line Coach from Penn State turned us down, that we just gave up on finding a defensive co-ordinator.

Moderator: Peter,

I think I have to agree with Coach Mitchell. The defense improved last year in terms of yards allowed. The offense and special teams put the defense in bad positions often enough that the scoring defense went up.

Remember, this is Ron Zook's defense. So, no matter who is the coordinator, they answer to a higher power.

Would Larry Johnson have been a good fit? We'll never know. He hadn't been a coordinator in the past. I think he would have fit in well with the rest of the staff. But there is something to be said for continuity. The returning players know and trust Dan Disch and Curt Mallory.

Wallace, Champaign, IL: can you or Jeremy get ahold of Appleton in the near future? That is one of the more odd recruting scenarios that I can remember following. Said he was coming here more than once, than all of a sudden stopped talking.

Moderator: Wallace,

I'm on it. I think if we give him a couple of days, he will answer his phone. I would really like to hear the truth from Terry on a number of subjects, starting with why he wasn't at the Army game after seeming so excited about the invitation.

It's got to be hard for some of these guys to deal with the recruiting process. Michael Buchanan said it was stressful. I wish there was a way to make it easier on the players.

sgartner, litchfield, illinois: Once again The Zooker proves he can recruit, now about the game day coaching. What do you thnk about Mike White as asst. coach to help with game day coaching etc.? It seems like a great idea to me. Love the chats!

Moderator: sgartner,

I would like to see Mike White on the Illinois sidelines. But I don't think it's going to happen.

To quote him, Ron Zook coaches "with his gut." Sometimes, that works well, like at the end of the Ohio State game in 2007. Sometimes, it doesn't work out. But I like that he continues to be himself on the sideline. When it comes to judging him as a coach, I go back to the great work he did after being fired at Florida. Extremely impressive.

A year ago, he was a national coach of the year candidate. He didn't forget everything before the 2008 season. The games just didn't all go his way. It happens. His job is to have it happen less often.

Don, Champaign, IL: sorry to hear you wont be going with the coaches on trips anymore. I did find those stories interesting. I dont understand the NCAA rules in some cases, that being one. You still think that a BCS playoff going to happen?

Moderator: Don,

I don't understand the rules either. The limits on the media seem ridiculous.

As for the BCS playoff, we can only hope. I don't think it will happen as long as the Big Ten and Pac-10 fight it. And I'm guessing if Southern Cal keeps getting left out, the resistance from the Pac-10 will fade.

How about 2014 as the start of the playoff?

Bud, Lake Forest, IL: Bob,

What are this year's plans for a spring practice up in the Chicago area? The weather may even be somewhat cooperative since the CU spring game will be on April 25.

Moderator: Bud,

Great question. Nothing has been announced yet, but I'm guessing there will be an attempt to have a Chicago scrimmage. I will let you know as soon as I find out.

joe, st louis, mo: The craziest thing so far today is that #1 recruit Bryce Brown is considering skipping college and going to Canada to play for three years in the CFL. Any truth to this?

Moderator: Joe,

I haven't heard that and I have a hard time believing it unless he has serious academic issues. Even for a star player, the money wouldn't be great in the CFL.

Tony, Phoenix, AZ: It seems every year the SEC schools load up on recruits knowing full well that many are not going to be qualifiers. How can you compare Illinois to Mississippi? Drummond is in for a huge culture shock.

Moderator: Tony,

Of course, there's a huge difference between Chicago and Oxford. And, there is a huge difference between Washington, D.C. and Champaign. That has worked out just fine for Illinois and the players. We'll have to see what happens with Craig Drummond at Mississippi. I know he is a talented player with great potential. He wanted to be in school this winter and Mississippi made it happen. Right now, he's about 60 degrees warmer than I am.

Moderator: Remember, I'll be here all day. And you've got Paul Klee and Tony Bleill chats coming up in the afternoon.

I might take a little break for lunch and to go over to see Coach Zook. But we are here for you all day to take your questions.

tom, bloomington, IL: Has Jalani Jenkins chosen a school yet? I know it's doubtful for UI but just wondering.

So Greene and Buchanon are the "good news" suprises and Appleton is the "bad news" sort of surprise. Any other "surprises" we'll see today good or bad?

How will our class stack up vs. other Big Ten schools?

Moderator: Tom,

Jelani picked Florida. Illinois fans have to be happy he didn't go with Michigan or Penn State.

I don't expect any more surprises. The one possibility is Je'Ron Stokes.

The late additions move Illinois up, in my opinion, in the Big Ten rankings. Ohio State is first, with Michigan and Michigan State next. Illinois is in with a group that includes Penn State and Minnesota. Rivals.com has Missouri ranked a few spots behind Illinois, which is at No. 31.

Dave, Champaign, IL: Bob,

i know this has been asked alot, but to me the LB position is still a concern. Anything you can say to help me relax on this issue?

Moderator: Dave,

Few counted on J Leman and Brit Miller to be as good as they were. You never know. I'm guessing one of the redshirt freshman will have a big spring and make the coaches feel better about it.

Aaron Gress and Eric Watts will both likely end up at linebacker. So there is help at the position in this class.

Chris B, Decatur, IL: Andrew Carter said, in his Q&A, that he will be starting at Center or Guard for the Missouri game. Gotta love his optimism, but I'm guessing the chance of that actually happening are slim. Does he have reason to be so confident in his abilities?

Moderator: Chris,

I think Andrew is a confident kid. And he's talented. But he knows he needs to get bigger and stronger.

I think the coaches will be happy that he wants and expects to play. He is a one of the really good talkers in the group. So, of course, from a selfish media standpoint I hope he gets his wish.

TK, tampa, FL: special teams has to improve dramatically, and it seems as if Illinois is content to stand pat with the special teams coach and punters. Why would I expect this unit to improve next year, althought they frankly, can't get any worse. We need a bonafide punter in the worst way.

Moderator: TK,

All I can tell you is that Ron Zook realizes that special teams need to make a huge leap. And he is really the one in charge of special teams. It will be a point of emphasis throughout the spring and summer.

Somebody suggested yesterday that Illinois should give Terry Hawthorne a try at punter. Opposing teams would hate that, so maybe you'll see it.

Buddy Wiser, St. Louis, MO: Two questions:

1. Are you wearing 3-D glasses as you type?

2. Of the guys you expect to sign, who are we still waiting on?

Moderator: Buddy,

I just put on my 3-D glasses. Pretty weird. I wore them during the Super Bowl, but not during Monday's "Chuck." Too distracting.

I don't think Illinois is waiting on anybody other than the possible signing of Darryl Lee, who has some academic issues to clear up. He may or may not sign.

Duke, Urbana, IL: Bob,

is there a place to find out the coaching staff from year to year? I didnt know if that was a option on the internet or not?

Moderator: Duke,

We just ran it in Monday's paper. Here is the link:

http://www.illinihq.com/news/football/2009/02/01/differing_opinions_on_ui_football_staff_shakeup

Ross, Indianapolis, IN: Has the paperwork shown up yet for Buchanan & Lee? Our defense still needs all of the help it can get. Go Illini!

Moderator: Ross,

Buchanan's might not be in yet because he's got a 1 p.m. press conference. But I talked to him and he is definitely signing with Illinois.

Darryl Lee is to be determined. It's very possible he won't sign today, but could join the class later. I will keep you updated.

Luke, Urbana, IL: It seems like Lee will be here if he makes the grades. True? If not, possible he could go to a prep school or something like that and come back next season?

Moderator: Luke,

Lee will definitely be a part of the class if he gets all of his academic work completed. If not, he will go to a prep school with the idea of joining the Illini next January.

Trent, Urbana, IL: Are the new coaches going to be able to help us keep the contacts we already have? And also establish new ones?

Moderator: Trent,

I think Joe Gilbert and Keith Gilmore will help Illinois maintain the Ohio ties that have been so productive. And I think Mike Schultz will open Texas to the school, especially the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

David, NYC, NY: Bob, that was me that suggested Hawthorne at punter!

Thanks for the chat, it's helped my miserable morning fly by.

Has Marvin Fellows signed his LOI? I've heard some late rumblings about the Illini still being in the mix recently.

Moderator: David,

I just checked and Melvin did sign with Ohio State. I wonder how soon he will get on the field?

Good suggestion on Hawthorne. Though, as you'll see with the next question, he can't be the every down punter.

Phil, San Diego, CA: You keep talking about Hawthorne as a punter. He had a good average, but when I saw him, he looked like a high school punter--a lot of role. Have you seen Steve Hull punt? The game I saw, he looked like an NFL punter. I could see him being the punter next year if they give him a chance. A truly great athlete, seems to be able to do almost anything. From what I've seen, he may be the most under rated talent in the class.

Moderator: Phil,

You're right about Hawthorne. He would be used strictly as a guy who could threaten a fake, maybe inside the 50.

I haven't heard about Steve Hull the punter. If he is capable, I guarantee the coaches will give him a look.

I like talking to Steve. He is both friendly and intelligent. He has a lot to say. I want him to play, again, for selfish reporter reasons.

Don, Champaign, IL: BA,

in response to Duke's question. Is there a place to find the year by year coaches throughout IL football history? Would be interesting to see, espeically after seeing the assistants that Moeller had while here. He had some pretty good ones, even though his record didnt show it.

Moderator: Don,

I promise at some point later in the winter, when recruiting dies down a bit, to load it up on HQ. It will be a big file. And you're right, Moeller had some very talented assistants, including one Lloyd Carr.

Ken, Champaign, IL: you talked to the coaches today?

Moderator: Ken,

Not yet. I will be at a press conference with Coach Zook later in the afternoon.

Let me know if there is anything specific you want asked.

Pete, Urbana, IL: where does Green fit into a already crowded, yet talented stable of RB's?

Would it be smart for one of them to redshirt?

Moderator: Pete,

Really fast guys will always have a place on the field if they prove they can hold onto the ball and can take a hit. Green is a big fan of Warrick Dunn. If he ends up being that good, Illinois is going to win a lot of football games.

It might be smart to redshirt one of the younger guys. But I don't expect that to happen. You might see them get looks at other spots on the field. Linebacker was suggested earlier for Mikel Leshoure.

PHIL, CHAMPAIGN, ILLINOIS: WHAT HAPPENED TO APPLETON ? I UNDERSTAND THAT WISCONSIN WAS AT HIS MOM'S HOUSE WHEN HE WAS VISITING ILLINOIS LAST SATURDAY ?

Moderator: Phil,

I've heard that but won't believe it until I hear it from Kraig or his mom. At every turn, he told us he was going to Illinois. Something happened and he didn't.

I want to find out what happened. His recruitment would make a really good book.

CBJ, Columbus, OH: Any word on Darius Moffett?

Moderator: Apparently, Darius is going to Eastern Michigan. I think there were some academic issues that hurt him in recruiting.

Chris, Urbana, IL: I've been checking on rivals and the blog on fightingillini.com and I haven't seen anything about Tommie Hopkins' LOI being sent in yet. I thought he was signing with the rest of the ESL group?

Moderator: Chris,

Tommie Hopkins was one of the last in. But he is in.

He could be one of those underrated guys who ends up being a big-time player in college.

Trent, Urbana, IL: are we expecting anyone else to sign today?

Moderator: Trent,

Darryl Lee and Je'Ron Stokes are the ones out there that still could sign.

Illinois could also be done for the day.

Brian Kilmer, Chicago, IL: Bob - love the chat

A few questions on negative recruiting.

Frist, going back a few years to Benn/Wilson, I read that the RG had hired an outside law firm to investigate the 'charges', assumed to be from ND, and would respond accordingly, but it didn't appear that response happened. Can you touch on this, and is this what has started the ball rolling in terms of negative recruiting against Zook?

Also, what schools utilize this tactic most against us - the other board seems to point toward NW and Wisconsin often.

Finally, to what extreme will these schools go? For example, on the Rivals board, there seems to be more than a few new members who sign on and state threads that are baseless, such as the KC QB to KState, Hill to Michigan, Buckner to Wisc - just wondering if this could be organized at a higher level?

Moderator: Brian,

We never did hear a response. I was eager to find out what the investigation uncovered.

I don't know which schools use the tactic the most. I'm going to dig into it later this spring.

I don't think it really works. If you tell an 18-year-old not to do something, based on my own experience, that's like begging them to do it. If you tell an Illinois recruit that there are problems at the school, he isn't going to turn on Illinois. He's going to defend his choice.

I don't think the message boards have a major impact on recruiting. I asked incoming Illinois recruits about the message boards and found that few look at them during recruiting. Probably a good call. These are confident kids who aren't likely be swayed by something negative written anonymously.

I don't blame fans for passionately following their schools. And we shouldn't be surprised or bothered if it carries over to recruiting. I hear criticism of the recruiting sites and it makes me want to scream. We have freedom of speech and freedom of the press in this country. If that means a recruit gets a few extra phone calls a week, that's part of that freedom. The player always have the option not to answer.

Eric, Chicago, IL: As this class winds down, i was wondering where you see we project next years? Any chance on top 30 recruits in the counry?

Moderator: Eric,

Great question. Ron Zook's staff will go after the best players. So, I won't be surprised if there is another Arrelious Benn or Martez Wilson who picks Illinois in 2010.

I think Illinois had good success with the late visits. Justin Green didn't come in until Saturday. You will see Ron Zook do this again next year.

David , NYC, NY: Bob,

The late recruiting surge by the Illini by snagging Buchanan and Green really put some rest in our hearts after losing plenty of recruits to academic issues recently.

What latest on Darryl Lee?

Moderator: David,

We'll know more about Darryl Lee later. If not today, then Friday or early next week. I believe if he is able to get cleared academically, he will be with the Illini at Camp Rantoul.

While Illinois certainly wanted to add Craig Drummond and Tank Carradine, the class ended up with fewer longterm academic concerns. From what I understand, Justin Green is an excellent student. There are a bunch of guys in this class that fit that model.

Evan , Champaign, IL: espn.com has a list of undeclared players that are still considering schools, Illinois being among them. Some of these players are 3 stars. Have you heard anything about these players possibly committing late to Illinois?

Players such as; D.J. Hunter (S) OH, Demond Dennis (RB) GA, Darrell Mason (ATH) OH, A.J. Graham (QB) FL, and Ian Knight (DE) KS.

Moderator: Evan,

I haven't heard anything about five, but will check it out and get back to you.

Demond Dennis is going to play for Mike Locksley at New Mexico.

Moderator: Just checked the latest team rankings on Rivals. and Scout and they have Illinois 32nd and 38th, respectively. It will change later in the day.

Eric, Chicago, IL: Do you agree with Todd Mccshay saying "Illinois the most disappointing in the country"

JOHN, CHAMPAIGN, ILLINOIS: I HAVNT BEEN KEEPING UP ON THIS CHAT BUT TODD MCSHAY ON ESPN JUST SAID ILLINOIS WAS THE MOST DISSAPOINTING CLASS, AND THAT WE HAVE NO ONE IN THE TOP 150, YOUR' THOUGHTS?

Moderator: John and Eric,

He is off his John Rocker. Terry Hawthorne, by any reasonable measure, is a Top 150 player. Tom Lemming puts him in his Top 50. And Justin Green is a Top 100 player.

He might be calling the class disappointing relative to expectations after the Rose Bowl season. But despite the loss of Mike Locksley and Eric Wolford, Illinois still came up with a solid class.

Like with an NFL draft class, we won't know for sure who was right until later. Save McShay's comments on your DVR just in case.

David , NYC , NY: to Evan from Champaign, IL

We withdrew our offer to DJ Hunter after he allegedly shot a fifteen year old kid in the face with a BB Gun.

Moderator: David,

Thanks for the reminder.

Dan, Urbana, IL: You just said where the sites had us ranked as of right now. Where do you see it ending up? Top 30?

Moderator: Dan,

I think right at 30, ahead of at least half of the schools in the Big Ten. Way ahead of Iowa, which is struggling with this year's class according to the recruiting sites.

Chris, Warrenville, IL: Is it true that there is a "unspoken agreement" between the coaches in the Big Ten that once a recruit commits to a program that they are off limits to other schools?

If this is the case was Wisconsin out of line to go after Appleton?

Also do other conferences have this agreement as well?

Moderator: Chris,

I think the Big Ten would like for there to be an unspoken agreement, but I don't think it really exists. If a player keeps taking your calls, you aren't going to stop recruiting him even if he did say he was going to another school.

It has worked both ways for Illinois, which got Jack Cornell and Jason Ford after they made a commmitment to Big Ten rivals.

I can't imagine there are any agreements in the SEC or Big 12. Maybe the Ivy League. That's about it.

Ben, Urbana, IL: when is Stokes going to announce?

Do we have a good shot there?

Moderator: Ben,

Stokes is going to announce in the early evening. It sounds like it won't be Illinois.

Mudhen, Riverside, Illinois: Mr. Asmussen, Just wondering if smaller class sizes, 20 and under, are actually a good sign for a program, because it indicates you are retaining more players in your previous classes, or am I missing something? Thank you for this chat.

Moderator: Mudhen,

You make a good point. Illinois wants to retain as many players as possible. It helps build continuity in the program. You're right, if Illinois brought in 30 players every year, it would be a sign of trouble.

Of course, the reality of college football is that not every player is going to be happy. The key is to get players involved so they want to stick around even when they aren't stars. I think the key to recruiting is that middle pack of players, the three-star and two-star guys. The more they develop, the better off you're going to be. I think Ron Zook's staff has had good success with lesser-rated players.

eric, chicago, il: Just curious as to why you say it looks like stokes will not pick illinois? I thought maybe he would look closer now that appleton is gone

Moderator: Eric,

Illinois still has plenty of depth at receiver. He still might pick Illinois, but I'm guessing he goes somewhere else.

You should be glad that I'm predicting he won't come to Illinois since I am so often wrong with my predictions. I have had some of the folks inside the program tell me they think it's unlikely.

Andy, Urbana, IL: Bob,

regarding going after a player who is committed to another school. How do you know when to keep going after him or to stop? Doesnt this upset coaches, that this happens this often?

There is way more committing and uncommitting in football than any sport I can think of, basketball for sure.

Moderator: Andy,

I think you keep going until the player says something like, "Hey, I'm going to X. Leave me alone." As long as the player keeps talking, you shouldn't stop. And you're right, it does upset the coaches.

There may or may not be more decommitments. But there is definitely more knowledge of the decommitments. The players will talk about them and they are being widely reported.

Eric, Urbana, IL: will Zook's press conference be on the radio? And I am guessing it will be on fightingillini.com again?

Moderator: Eric,

It won't be live on the radio, but highlights will be be on Steve Kelly's show at 5 p.m. and Darrell Hoemann will have video of the press conference on HQ later today.

Trent, Urbana, IL: why is there more knowledge and talking about decommitments in football than other sports?

And just an fyi, just checked the blog at Fightingillini.com and it does confirm that the spring game will be April 25th. Practices will start March 30th.

Moderator: Trent,

There is more talk because there is so much time between the commitments and signing day. I'm not sure I like the idea of an early signing day, but it would cut into the decommits.

Thanks for checking on the spring game. Good reporting.

Trent, Urbana, IL: Correction,

practices will start the week of March 30th

Moderator: Even better reporting. And doing your own corrections. Awesome.

I can't wait for spring ball.

Ken, Urbana, IL: Bob,

why wouldnt you like the early signing day? I am sure the coaches would love it. Would allow them to not have to worry as much about today if they already had signed some players, say in the summer or early fall.

Moderator: Ken,

I'm not sure what I think about it. The question is who does it help? Would it benefit all schools or just the powers? Gerry DiNardo thinks it would help the big guys and cut into the recruiting opportunities for the rest.

I'm going to ask Coach Zook about it today and see what he thinks.

Don, Urbana, IL: Bob,

looks like Buchanan's LOI has come across recently. And for someone who asked earlier, Zook's press conference will be on fightingillini.com

and where can I get my paycheck from the N-G for helping out? Just kidding, but thanks for the chat. The info is much appreciated.

Moderator: Don,

Send me your address and I'll try to find something from our IlliniHQ stash. Not money, of course.

I was sure Buchanan would send in his letter after talking to him. He sounds like a nice kid.

Thanks for the info about Zook's press conference. I'll be the one in the front wearing the flannel shirt and desperately needing to shave.

Jeremy, Champaign, IL: I think you have an interesting point about early signing day. Would the big guys get all the top players to commit early and than leave the other schools to fight for the "lesser" recruits? I cant wait to hear what you find out from Zook about this topic.

Moderator: Jeremy,

As important as recruiting is to Coach Zook, I'm sure he has thought about what it would mean to the Illinois program. He won't support it unless it benefits the Illini.

Tom, Champaign, IL: what is all gonna be in the paper tommorrow about signing day?

Moderator: Tom,

The printed copy of our Q&As will be in there for sure. Plus, reaction from Coach Zook and a look at how the Big Ten schools filled their needs.

I'm writing a story about the expectation that players will be on the field earlier in their careers.

Moderator: Tom,

I wish we could run this entire chat based on all of the great questions. We wouldn't have enough room. I'm hoping we don't break the Internet.

Larry, Peoria, Illinois: More of a statement than a question. I think Kraig Appleton's decision was addition by subtraction for the ILLINI. His actions have shown his immaturity and lack of commitment and I think someone like him could have a very negative effect on his team. I personally am glad he went elsewhere. I think everyone should stop moaning over not signing him. Let's talk about the young men that do want to be here.

Moderator: Larry,

The couple of times I got to talk to Kraig, he was friendly and polite. I understand your thoughts and concerns about him, but you also have to remember this is a young guy living in a tough place with people pulling him different directions. We all might have struggled with a choice if we were in his shoes.

I want to hear from Kraig what happened before I speak too harshly about him.

I do like your point about moving on. I think Illinois fans should celebrate th players who are on the way. Having talked to all of them in the past week, I can tell you they are good people.

David, NYC, Ny: STOKES TO MICH :(

Moderator: David,

You get the Buckeye News Hawk Award. Does anybody get that reference.

Steve, Champaign Co, IL: Thanks for basing your analyses of Illini football games etc. on big ideas and new strategies, not tired old historical trends like Tate does. Your insights have a realistic basis and build momentum. Can we get more of IlliniHQ to adopt this model?

Moderator: Steve,

We are always willing to listen to suggestions. We all need to think outside our comfort level. If we hadn't, HQ wouldn't exist and you would never see that ridiculous photo of me in our Weekend Planner.

Loren's old, for sure, but we like him. Heck, they named a street after him.

My nature is to be optimistic, which might explain why "can't be done" will never be a term I say in regards to a team or player or program. It can always be done given the right set of circumstances.

I even think the economy is going to get fixed. Pretty soon too. OK, I'm nuts,

Ryan, Champaign, IL: will there be another fan blogger this season?

Moderator: Ryan,

Are you volunteering for the job?

The boss isn't around, but I'm hoping we do it again.

Alex, Champaign, IL: Is there one player, that no one is really talking about that you are excited to see?

Moderator: Alex,

Tommie Hopkins has been overshadowed by higher profile teammates. I think he can be a really good college player. I'm guessing he gets on the field in 2009.

Jeremy, Champaign, IL: Bob,

do you think that a school needs to sign a QB each year? Not so much to start there freshman year, unless needed, more for a depth purpose?

Moderator: Jeremy,

I will say yes with one caveat: the player has to fit your style. You can't reach for a quarterback just to have a quarterback. Think what would have happened last year if both Juice Williams and Eddie McGee had gotten hurt. Illinois would have been down to one scholarship quarterback, a freshman at that. You might have seen Arrelious Benn playing quarterback. That would have been fun.

Larry, Champaign, IL: I think you would have enough people volunteer to have more than one fan blogger next season

Moderator: Larry,

I think the more reader involvement we get, the better our product. We are here to serve you. Period.

I will suggest the idea to ace editor Jim Rossow.

David, NYC, NY: I am a pretty obsessive fan of our football team and follow the big ten conference closely. What qualifications do I need to be a fan blogger? Is there an e-mail address where I can submit writing samples? I am very interested!

Moderator: David,

By far the best way to do it would be to contact sports editor Jim Rossow. He can be reached at jrossow@news-gazette.com.

Jim is very open to anything that will make our product better.

Moderator: I'm going to take a couple hour break to go hear Coach Zook and to appear on Steve Kelly's show on WDWS.

I'll be back later in the day. Keep the questions coming. I'll get to them when I get back.

Thanks again for all of your input. We're going to do this every signing day in the future. I really appreciate the thoughtful questions.

Moderator: I'm back. I'm going to go down to our swanky breakroom and eat my Jimmy John's. I'll be back in a few. Thanks again for all of your great questions.

Ben, Champaign, IL: Bob,

any idea what happened with that one LB who felt good about? Want to say his name was Barrington but could be wrong

Moderator: Ben,

It was Sam Barrington. The Illinois coaches thought they had him, but the distance kept him in Florida. He'll be playing for South Florida, which has done a good job taking kids from nearby.

Pete, Urbana, IL: where will we see McGee at this year? Will we see him at WR? Or maybe just at WR for trick plays?

Moderator: Pete,

I think Eddie McGee will first be the backup quarterback, with an eye on starting in 2010 after Juice Williams leaves. But I'm guessing new offensive coordinator Mike Schultz will consider using him some at receiver or in a special package. It makes sense.

Jim, Urbana, IL: anything new on Lee tonight?

Any idea on when a decision will be made here?

Moderator: Jim,

From what I understand, the class is done for now. I think Lee will go to a prep school and return to Illinois next January. While that could change, that's my best guess.

DB, Peoria, IL: Overall I think addiing this class with the last couple of classes increases the overall team speed ten fold from even the rose bowl year. Who is a sleeper that could emerge from either the 08 Class or the 09 class?

Moderator: DB,

I'll go back to a guy I mentioned earlier, Tommie Hopkins. Ron Zook said today he can play five positions: both safeties, both corners and nickel. That makes him valuable and will help him get on the field early.

Moderator: Our multimedia items are rolling in. Listen to Steve Kelly's podcast and Ron Zook's video on the front page of HQ. On a basketball note, Ed Bond has submitted his first video blog. He's got a photo of the Illinois charter with a link to tracking it. It hasn't taken off yet. Awesome.

Shaun, Belleville, IL: Any news on Gamble or Jackson being allowed back on the team for the fall. It has been rumored they are in school, any truth to the rumor?

Moderator: Shaun,

Brian Gamble is back in school and will be back with the team.

Mark Jackson is not with the team. I don't expect him back.

Kyle, Champaign, IL: So behind the scenes stuff with Appleton, per Zook. Any clues?

Moderator: Kyle,

I'm going to look into it and get a real answer. Coach Zook was asked about Kraig Appleton. He didn't go into specifics. I have read and heard all sorts of stuff, but it's all rumor. You need real sources before you start jumping a kid or a school or a coach.

Bill , Carbondale, IL: Any chance Lattimore gets moved to LB with Graham and Davis in front of him at TE, since it is an obvious area of concern? Or anyone from the current roster moving over to LB?

Moderator: Bill,

I think Justin Lattimore will stay at tight end. But the one name I heard as a linebacker that might have slipped under the radar was Michael Buchanan. It sounds like he is more than capable of dropping into coverage. So, maybe he's the guy who gets thrown into the linebacker mix.

Trent, Urbana, IL: Bob,

I find it kind of shocking how far apart some of the same teams are on different lists.

I will just take Florida State for example. On Scout there are ranked #17, on Rivals there # 6.

Moderator: Trent,

Great point. It shows you that we are basically talking about educated guesses. Go back to Vontae Davis, who I believe was a three-star player. When I first saw him on the field, I thought he deserved six stars. You just don't know who is doing the ratings.

But it sure is fun to talk about. And I believe the folks at the recruiting sites are trying hard to get it right. It's just impossible to get it right.

Cres, Dunlap, Illinois: someone mentioned the problem with players being admitted to Il. Then I saw a player admitted to Michigan who was not admitted to Il. There was a expose in the Detroit Free Press I believe. For the most part Mich. athletes go to a separate school. Kind of like IL. athletes attending Parkland. Your comments?

Moderator: Cres,

That sounds like a good deal for Michigan. I want to read more about it. If true, Rich Rodriguez is going to be playing for the national title in two years.

Patrick E., Jacksonville, FL: Bob-

I've heard rumors you are a Jaguar fan, as a fellow fan can you confirm or deny these rumors?

Moderator: Patrick E.,

The truth is that I own a Jaguars jacket that I bought because it had the old logo on it. Do you remember that the car company sued the team because the logo was too similar? My coat has the original logo. Plus, it's warm.

I probably do root for the Jags, but I really like the Dolphins. Sorry.

Shaun, Belleville, IL: Bob, Since Gamble will be back is it safe to assume he will be switched to defense?

Moderator: Shaun,

I would sure think so. He prefers defense, though he had a touchdown catch in the win against Ohio State.

The receiver position is stacked at Illinois right now.

Don, Champaign, IL: is Illinois one of the hardest schools in the conference to get into?

Moderator: Don,

I called my wife, Julie, who has covered the university for the News-Gazette, and she said Northwestern is harder to get into. Illinois is on par with Michigan and Wisconsin.

Lloyd, Ann Arbor, Michigan: Bob,

Which player that signed else where would the Illini most like to have?

Moderator: Lloyd,

That's easy: Jelani Jenkins, a linebacker who signed with Florida. He's from the D.C. area and is going to be a great player.

bill izatt, taylorville , il: espn is showing how a number of schools did signing the top players within their own state. how did illinois do in that regard?

Moderator: Bill,

I think Illinois did pretty well, especially in East St. Louis.

Chicago is pretty heavily recruited and Illinois will never be able to get all of the top guys from there. Leon Hill and Lendell Buckner have a chance to be great players. Michael Buchanan will make an early impact. And Greg Fuller is going to compete immediately at fullback.

It isn't an overwhelming year for talent in Illinois. I believe next year is better and Illinois is after some good players early.

Joe , Springfield, IL: Any idea on where Tank Carradine will end up?

Moderator: Joe,

He hasn't signed anywhere yet and won't even consider it until later in the week. I think he'll end up at Cincinnati.

Ken, Champaign, IL: are we gaining talentwise on the "big time" programs (OSU,Mich,PSU)?

Moderator: Ken,

Great question. I don't know if gaining is the right term. But the disparity isn't growing like it was before Ron Zook arrived.

I think when Penn State goes through the transition after Joe Paterno retires, Illinois will have a chance to make gains. And if Rich Rodriguez struggles again, Michigan won't continue to recruit like it has.

Shane, Champaign, IL: Bob,

we recruited a FB? wow.. off the top of my head seems like the first one we have recruited on scholarship under Zook.

Moderator: Shane,

You're right. Ron Zook said Greg Fuller is the first true fullback they have signed. Russ Weil didn't get enough credit for Rashard Mendenhall's big season. I think you will see Fuller on the field a lot in 2009.

Ed Bond , Urbana, IL: Looks like someone finally woke up and gave Bondo a blog. Congrats; and Ed, enjoy Smokey's. I've been going there for 25 years and it never disappoints.

Dave, Urbana, IL: anything that Zook talked about that really sticks out?

Moderator: Dave,

He mentioned how few official visits Illinois had relative to the number of players it signed. I'm sure the folks in the accounting office appreciate the help.

It tells me that they know what they want in recruiting and don't waste a lot of effort.

Michael, Champaign, IL: Bob,

I dont know what it is, but I have a good feeling about this class. I am wondering aloud if the national guys are underestimating some of these players. I cant wait for spring ball, I think its going to be a good, fun year.

Moderator: Michael,

I don't think we will know for sure until two or three years from now. But Illinois fans have to be happy about Terry Hawthorne, Justin Green, Nathan Scheelhaase and pals. You'll get a look at plenty of them in 2009.

Brandon, Champaign, IL: can we get Tom Lemming back in a few weeks for a chat and get his assessment of the class?

Moderator: Brandon,

Tom has agreed to do chats with us every couple of months. We'll get him back as soon as possible.

I tried to call him today, but forgot that he gets no cell reception when he's at CBS. I'm sure I'll here from him Thursday.

Dale, Champaign, IL: an idea for next season:

after the games, have a chat for a while to answer questions/comments about the game

Moderator: Dale,

I like it. We tried to do pregame chats last season, but didn't get many questions. I'll talk to Jim Rossow about it. It would work especially well with early games.

Lynn, Champaign, IL: Bob,

you seen this?

http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=908931

deciding on which school by a coin flip? Interesting

Moderator: Lynn,

That's crazy. Everyone should take a look. There's got to be a better way.

Dave, Champaign, IL: Bob,

any signings or anything from today around the country really surprise you?

Moderator: Dave,

Not so much a surprising signing, but I think LSU has put together a very good group at the top. And that's coming off a subpar season for Les Miles. I think the Tigers will be contenders for the national title again in the near future. Hopefully, Miles won't get offered the Michigan job again.

Nate , Champaign, IL: Bob,

when will the times of the games be announced? Guessing summer? I guess the first question is what network we will be on each week.

Moderator: Nate,

Usually, the times start trickling out in the late spring and early summer, at least for the first month of games. I'm guessing another night game in St. Louis and the Big Ten Network for Illinois State. Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan State should all get good play, though you might not know the times until after the season starts.

Moderator: I just talked to Tom Lemming and he rates the Illinois class higher than everybody else. He has Illinois at No. 21, which is fourth in the Big Ten behind No. 2 Ohio State, No. 10 Michigan and No. 13 Michigan State.

Brad, Urbana, IL: If Patrick Nixon is made eligible by the clearinghouse, will he count on this years recruiting class? Or will he be a walk-on?

Moderator: Brad,

He will definitely be on scholarship. And he will likely count in this year's class. The number that really matters is the 85 overall scholarships. That's what Illinois needs to hit before next season. Ron Zook said he is at the number for the first time in his Illinois career.

Lance, Urbana, IL: Bob,

if you can... can you find a link to that story someone was talking about earlier regarding Michigan? Would be a interesting read. I am not sure how that would be legal if what he wrote was true.

Bob, Urbana, IL: can you get a link to that story from Cres? would be an interesting read

Moderator: Bob and Lance,

I did a quick search for the story and couldn't find it. I will keep looking and post it on my next chat. Sorry.

Wayne, Urbana, IL: dont you think Michigan will improve after RichRod gets a few of his own classes together?

Moderator: Wayne,

I do think Michigan has a chance to be much better in the near future. And the Wolverines landed a very good class today.

Moderator: I'm going to cut off the chat because the boss keeps bugging me about the stories I still have left to do.

This is going to be an annual event if I have my way.

You were all great. Sorry about the few questions we didn't get to.

If you have anything you need to know before next Tuesday, email me at asmussen@news-gazette.com.

Asmussen out.
