Good afternoon everyone, thanks for coming by another Illinois basketball chat. I'll be here for about an hour. Fire away.
Klee
Pete from Chicago, IL — 12:31 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
Klee, great job with the chats. Can you name one player from each Big Ten 10 that you see/expect showing improvement from last season? Thanks!
Paul Klee (moderator) — 12:34 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
Pete- Good question. Here's my quick opinion, without thinking about it too much:
Michigan State
ZSick from Mildenhall, England — 12:35 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
Klee: Can you give us an update of some former Illini players, curious about Damir Krupalija, Robert Archibald, Jerry Gee, Kiwanne Garris, Victor Chukwedebe, Circa 1995-2000 Illini...Loved those guys. Just wondering how they are doing and if they are still playing. Thanks as always for your hard work!

Bill from Champaign, IL — 12:36 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
Klee, What needs to happen for Assembly Hall to regain that full/loud atmosphere it had during the 2004-2005 season?
Paul Klee (moderator) — 12:37 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
Bill- Win games. Pretty simple. Illinois went 14-3 at the Hall last season, got some of its homecourt mojo back. Klee
Steve H. from Chicago, Illinois — 12:39 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
How bad is Alex Legion?!?! At Illini Madness during a scrimmage he threw up an air ball from beyond the arc AND choked on a lay-up! All Ive been reading is how he needs some non-con/fluffer games to get his confidence back and that all he does is light it up in practice. Yet during the madness he pulls those stunts? Can we designate him waterboy for the season? I cringe everytime he touches the ball.

Prickly Pete from The Hamptons, New York — 12:41 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
We are faced with a really interesting scenario this year. Illinois loses two servicable but not highly skilled senior guards (Chester and Trent) and a solid fiver year defender/rebounder combo player (Calvin Brock). These guys made very few mistakes. They didn't lose games due to bad decisions, turnovers, etc. They are being replaced with what appear to be far more gifted athletes (the three freshman guards) who have no experience. I think back to some of Illinois' better teams in the past 15 years, and the experienced back courts comprised of senior, but less talented guards (e.g., Heldman, Turner, etc.) seemed to fare very well. I wonder if we aren't expecting too much from these new players. Although Trent, Chester and Calvin had athletic and offensive limitations, I think the team will miss them more than we realize. That said, having Demitri return seems hugely important. What do you think?
Paul Klee (moderator) — 12:42 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
Pete- I think that's a decent rundown. Thanks for the thoughts. Klee
Rick from Wilmette, IL — 12:43 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
When are official practices held for the team and how long do they last? Are they open to the public?
Are potential recruits allowed to practice with the team during this time or are there restrictions on when they can participate in drills or scrimmages?

When we get to November the saturday after Thanksgiving at 11 a.m. at Washinton High School Quincy Miller will go against James Siakam. I plan on going. Will you be there? Thanks.

Paul from Urbana, IL — 12:47 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
One concern I have this year is frontcourt defense. Keller, Tisdale, Semrau and Cole all commit fouls at a very high rate (5.0, 4.9, 5.7, 8.0 Fouls Committed per 40 Min respectively). Is this a concern for Coach Weber and is this why Coach Weber might be considering some zone?
Paul Klee (moderator) — 12:49 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009

J-Ran from Champaign, Ill. — 12:50 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
Paul, with Halloween right around the corner, what's your favorite horror movie and why?
Paul Klee (moderator) — 12:51 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
JRan- The Nuggets' 17-win season in 2002-03 felt like a nightmare. That was pre-Carmelo. Does that count?
Klee
Noday from Chi/Bmore, IL/MD — 12:52 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
Klee, what do you think about Mike Shaw and Wayne Blackshear surprising everybody with their midnight madness visit at Depaul, and do you think with the seemingly lacking interest from Weber that it was a significant sign of displeasure toward Illini Nation for not making them the top priority target recruits for the teams future??
Paul Klee (moderator) — 12:55 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
Noday- That's a stretch. Any lack of interest from the Blackshear/Shaw camps isn't due to a lack of interest from Bruce Weber. The coach knows how good Wayne Blackshear is - he watched the Fire often on the club circuit. I think he's a terrific talent, possibly the state's top prospect next to Jereme Richmond. The fact Illinois probably won't be involved with Blackshear isn't a sign there is no interest. Right now, Illinois is on the outside looking in with those two guys. But anything can change in recruiting.

Paul Klee (moderator) — 12:57 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
Let me add Purdue's Ryne Smith to that previous list of "most improved players" at the start of the chat. Klee
Scott from St. Louis, MO — 01:01 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
Paul:
Can you talk a little about how demtri looked for midnight madness? I was listening to the podcast, and it sounded like he looked a lot more explosive. Also, is there any video on web for MM?
Paul Klee (moderator) — 01:07 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
Scott- Demetri McCamey did what he's been doing in offseason pickup games and fall workouts. He was very good. He's more explosive, he's not taking as many questionable shots, he's been more consistent with his decision-making.
Whether that continues throughout the season, no one knows. But I really like the way he's committed himself. AAU coach Mike Mullins, who's known Demetri for years, told me this is the most focused and determined he's seen Demetri.
I think a few factors are at work here. One, he's seen close friend and former teammate Evan Turner pop up on magazine covers and All-American lists, and Evan Turner isn't shy about telling him about it. Bruce Weber isn't, either. I remember last season when Weber reminded McCamey, "You were just as good coming out of high school," or something along those lines. Weber knows how good McCamey can be, and he believes Demetri is the team's most important player.
Three, McCamey told me he's ignoring the NBA mock drafts and not thinking about his professional future this season.

Is Loren Tate your boss? When the two of you go to lunch, who pays?
Paul Klee (moderator) — 01:13 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
Ha! Loren Tate actually bought lunch at the Esquire yesterday. I almost fainted. We're usually roommates on road trips. He snores and says I get up too early. Other than our opposing viewpoints on redshirts and point guards, we are great friends. Klee
Tom F from Oak Brook, IL — 01:16 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009

Chris from Chicago, Illinois — 01:18 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
Klee,
Two questions:
What changes do you see for next years midnight madness festivities?
How much are the freshmen pushing the upperclassmen in practice and is tt apparent?
Thanks,
Chris
Paul Klee (moderator) — 01:21 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
Chris- I think they'll move the event to a Saturday. That's just what I think. Maybe I was too critical of last week's Illini Madness. I don't think so, though. But I expect changes next year. That wasn't the kind of atmosphere you want if you have a Bradley Beal-type recruit on campus.
As for your second question, D.J. Richardson has made Demetri McCamey a better player. That's the best example.
Asked associate head coach Wayne McClain about that the other day. Here's what he said:
"We've got a good blend - youth and the other kids. I just kind of like how they respect each other. And obviously our younger kids are pushing our older kids, too. You cannot act like that doesn't exist. And I think that makes our older kids more accountable."

Jeff from Urbana, IL — 01:22 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
Klee,
How many questions do you get during these chats? Every Wed. for the past month I have asked a question, but it never gets answered.
Paul Klee (moderator) — 01:23 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
Jeff- I apologize. We get a load of questions. Several dozen go unanswered, it's nothing against you. Klee
Alon from Champaign, IL — 01:24 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
Will this year's Illini Madness be shown on the Big Ten Network?
Paul Klee (moderator) — 01:24 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
Alon- No, the Big Ten Network handed broadcast rights over to the individual schools this year. Illinois' event was not televised. Klee
Peter from Carbondale, Illinois — 01:24 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
What is Gary Nottingham's job title? Is he involved in practice? I hear that he has a lot of knowledge about the game.

Dan from Naperville, illinois — 01:30 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
Is it safe to say that all of our commitments are on board to sign in November?
Paul Klee (moderator) — 01:32 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
Dan- Richmond, Head and Leonard told me in the past week they will sign a letter of intent with Illinois in November.
"I can't wait. That's the date I've been waiting for since I committed last summer," Meyers Leonard said. "That's the No. 1 day, so we can get it on paper and get down here."
Klee
Darrin from Minneapolis, Minnesota — 01:33 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
Do you ever see Illinois with a starting line-up of four guards and one big man? With the prospect of Beal or Randle joining Abrams, and the existing fantastic freshmen, it seems like a possibilty...
Paul Klee (moderator) — 01:35 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
Darrin- I think the closest you'll get to that scenario is playing Jereme Richmond at the 4 at times. He's not a guard, but he jumpstarts the break at Waukegan, throws a mighty outlet pass and I think his passing ability might be his best attribute. You still need some size, though. Klee
Mike S from Champaign, IL — 01:37 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
With Jordan returning, do you think Bertrand will redshirt? Give us your best guess.

Jeff from Urbana, IL — 01:43 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
Paul,
Now that basketball practice has started, what kinds of things is Bruce Weber working on? Do they work on fundamentals the first week? Or does Coach Weber go directly into teaching the offense, and any new wrinkles that he has developed? I'm guessing he spends alot of time on defense as well? Does Weber spend as much time with the upperclassmen, who know the system pretty well, or does he focus on the freshman?
Paul Klee (moderator) — 01:47 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
Jeff- A little of everything. For example, Monday's practice largely was devoted to defensive footwork and basics of the man-to-man help defense. They did the charge drill, where a defender must race to catch a ballhandler before getting bowled over and taking a charge. The coaches split up the big men and guards - Mike Davis and Billy Cole stayed with the guards - at one point. There was some zone work. Last season I saw more shooting drills - mainly after practice - than in previous seasons. And that was a better shooting team. But there were fewer free throw drills. And it was a better free throw shooting team. Go figure.
So far you've had at least two marathon 3-hour practices, and today is their first day off since last Thursday.
Hope that helps.
Klee
Greg from Quito, Ecuador — 01:48 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
Hello Paul,
Greetings from South America. Although the consensus is that Illinois will be better this year, considering the infusion of what most would call raw talent, isn't it also very possible that Illinois takes a step back?
Let me explain; Illinois was in the bottom 10 in Free Throws per game last year (correct me if I'm off a little bit). Now, considering where their record ended up, once could surmise that the Illini were incredibly lucky to win that many games. Without getting to the free throw line a team must rely on jump shots (much lower percentage). Perhaps this year those shooting percentages go down and the luck starts to turn. It reminds me of the most recent Rose Bowl trip by Illinois and the most recent Super Bowl trip by the Bears. In both those seasons, ALL possible outcomes went their way. Possibly last year was just a long string of fortunate luck. I mean, usually jump shooters don't make over 50% of their shots (Davis and Tisdale). Is getting to the free throw line a priority this practice season?
Paul Klee (moderator) — 01:59 PM on Wed, 10/21/2009
Greg- You hit the nail on the head. That was actually the discussion point with Mike Davis and Dominique Keller before practice yesterday - the importance of getting to the free throw line.
Good afternoon everyone, thanks for coming by another Illinois basketball chat. I'll be here for about an hour. Fire away.
