Talk with football beat writer Bob Asmussen after the Illinois-Ohio State game

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 06:56 PM on Sat, 09/26/2009

I'm going to get started a few minutes early, then break for a few minutes to write some of my story.

No way to sugarcoat what happened to Illinois today. Two years after one of the best games in recent program history, the Illini were shut out for the first time since 2006.

I'm going to get to the questions. Thanks for your participation.

shawn from st louis, mo — 06:56 PM on Sat, 09/26/2009

When does Western Michigan make it down to Champaign to play a game? I thought the agreement was one in Detriot, one back in Champaign?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 06:56 PM on Sat, 09/26/2009

Shawn,

According to the contract I have, Western Michigan plays at Memorial Stadium on Sept. 24, 2011. You are right that the deal was for one game in Detroit and one in Champaign.

Dan from Champaign, IL — 06:56 PM on Sat, 09/26/2009

Bob,

not sure if you seen it or not, but have you seen Doug Lesmerises poll? Was highlighted on Game Day this morning.

1) Alabama 2) Miami 3) Houston 4) Cincinnati 5) Florida

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 06:57 PM on Sat, 09/26/2009

Dan,

I looked at Doug's Top 25 earlier this week after somebody told me he is basing it entirely on this season. That's what we all should do. I think I've been open-minded about my poll, but not like Doug. I like what he's doing and maybe all of us should follow along. But the ballot is persoonal to everyone.
I think it's important to pay attention to what's going on outside your own Top 25. I have a list of 10 other teams I'm watching each week. Plus, I look at everyone's schedule.
His Miami vote isn't going so well today, but I think having them as high as he did was legitimate. I moved them into the Top 10 after the win against Georgia Tech.

Bud from Lake Forest, IL — 06:57 PM on Sat, 09/26/2009

Bob,

I hope you managed to stay dry! On the other hand, the Illini appeared to be dried up. Is the OSU offense that good or is our tackling that hit or miss? I'm just asking about the workmanlike, plain vanilla tackling.

How does all of this play out in prime time against PSU?

Best wishes,

_Bud

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 06:58 PM on Sat, 09/26/2009

Bud,

There's no question the Illini struggled again with tackling. Against a team like Ohio State, with a rugged quarterback and sturdy tailbacks, it became a real problem. Terrelle Pryor is hard to bring down, but not that hard.

Bob from Wheaton, IL — 06:59 PM on Sat, 09/26/2009

Bob,
Thanks for your time with the chats.
How can some teams (ie. Minnesota) consistantly get the ball to their star receivers (Decker), but the Illini can't get the ball to Benn?
Do the Illinois receivers run poor routes or is it a lack of passing accuracy? It seems like anything over 7 yards on third down is an impossible hurdle. Another few games like today and it may be time to start auditioning for next year's QB.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 07:00 PM on Sat, 09/26/2009

Bob,

I think you have to point the finger at three things: the quarterback, the scheme and, at times, the protection.

You would think you could get Benn a few yards off the line and throw him a quick pass. But Illinois doesn't do that much. The coaches want to get him down the field, which makes sense. But the most important item with Benn is to get the ball in his hands often.

I don't think Arrelious is playing any different than a year ago, though he was obviously slowed last week by the sprained ankle.

mike from chandler, az — 07:01 PM on Sat, 09/26/2009

Bob, one thing I have noticed is how a lot of the players seem to be talking more smack than they are concetrating on getting the job done. Between this and the lack of fundamentals I really wonder if Zook is respected by these kids or just another "one of the guys"
Thoughts?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 07:02 PM on Sat, 09/26/2009

Mike,

I think the players really like Zook. I wonder if it might be the other way, that they are trying too hard for him. He is definitely in their corner and they are definitely in his. I don't think you will hear any of the players say a bad word about their coach, publicly or privately. That seems to be the consensus on the team. He is their guy, which makes sense since he recruited all of them. There are no divided loyalties.

Steve from Champaign Co, IL — 07:02 PM on Sat, 09/26/2009

I've heard the new trustees are looking for a new President and AD that will do what it takes to make Illini football a consistent winner and national power, and stop rationalizing mediocrity. What are you hearing?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 07:04 PM on Sat, 09/26/2009

Steve,

I haven't heard anything about any possible changes. There are a whole lot of items on the board's agenda before it even thinks about sports. Or goes to an event. They have to hire a president and their could be more jobs open. Generally, you don't want your BOT messing with the sports at one of the branches of the university. That would be a major mistake. The board members just arrived. Their knowledge of the teams and programs isn't indepth enough to make smart choices about the future.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 07:05 PM on Sat, 09/26/2009

I'm going to take a break for a few minutes and get back to my story. I'll talk to you again in about 15 minutes.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 07:19 PM on Sat, 09/26/2009

I'm back. There are a few more questions to get to. Thanks for sticking around.

Red Grange from Wheaton, IL — 07:19 PM on Sat, 09/26/2009

Are we arrogant just stupid to schedule teams like Fresno State and Cincinnati when our Big Ten peers are scheduling Wofford, Akron, Temple and Northern Iowa? It's almost like the schedule was developed to help us avoid a bowl appearance. This is a team that needs to build confidence with some decisive wins. But we've lost to Western Michigan, Ohio U and San Jose State in recent years, so maybe there are no guarantees.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 07:21 PM on Sat, 09/26/2009

I would say Saturday's game between Cincinnati and Fresno State was a worst-case scenario for Illinois. The Bearcats won to stay undefeated, but Fresno State again played well on the road against a BCS team. You'd have to think the Bulldogs will be full of confidence when they visit Champaign in December. And they might need the game to get bowl eligible, which will only add to the effort.

Jack from shelbyville, il — 07:21 PM on Sat, 09/26/2009

Bob, Watching the game early. It appears to be the same old team as the last two ballgames. Defensive line being pushed all over the field, linebackers and d-backs can't wrap and tackle or they run completely by the play, the all world quarterback doesn't have a clue where to throw the ball particularly when he is under pressure, questionable play calling, penalties, the best receiving corps(?)in the Big Ten can't hold on to the all world's perfect spirals, total confusion on the special teams resulting in more penalties. Even the TV commentators are saying the Illini are in total confusion and it is going to be a long season. Nothing has changed nor will it this year.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 07:23 PM on Sat, 09/26/2009

Jack,

Hard to argue against any of your points. Missing Martez Wilson for today's game didn't help Illinois. But he's gone for the season. So is Miami Thomas. It creates an opportunity for other players.

One guy who I thought played well on defense is Clay Nurse. He did have the face mask penalty, but at least he was in position to make the play. He made a really good stop against Terrelle Pryor in the backfield.

Dan from Urbana, IL — 07:23 PM on Sat, 09/26/2009

why is our offense struggling so much?

Dont understand it right now honestly. We are as talented on offense as we have been in years.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 07:25 PM on Sat, 09/26/2009

Dan,

I wonder if there is some problems in the change from Mike Locksley to Mike Schultz. Locksley and Juice Williams were comfortable with each other. Maybe it's hard to make the transition than anyone realized.
It will be interesting to see how the Illinois offense bounces back against Penn State's defense, which I think is better than Ohio State's.

jake from shelbyville, il — 07:25 PM on Sat, 09/26/2009

Bob, I realize that Ohio State is a good ballteam but wasn't that the one of the most embarassing performances you have seen from an Illinois team in a long time? Most high school teams can execute better than this team. It appears that most of these players are extremely overrated coming out of high school and Illinois doesn't have a clue how to get blue chip players. This may finally be the time for some reevaluations concerning players and coaches.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 07:27 PM on Sat, 09/26/2009

Jake,

There were many embarrassing games for Illinois early in both the Ron Zook and Ron Turner eras. Remember Joe Paterno calling off his offense early in Zook's career. And the game against Rutgers in 2006, the last shutout before today, was not a good performance by Illinois.
The difference is that the Rose Bowl season raised the expectations at Illinois. Maybe prematurely. The program hasn't been able to sustain the success. Talent, chemistry, scheme, bad luck all plays into it.
The season is still young for the Illini, but it will get shorter soon if the team doesn't win a game or two.

Benny from Champaign, IL — 07:27 PM on Sat, 09/26/2009

why cant this defense create a turnover? Has been a big weekness the last 2 seasons.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 07:29 PM on Sat, 09/26/2009

Benny,

It starts with ability. And moves from there to aggressiveness. When you getting shoved around the field a little bit, your aggressiveness is going to fade some. And you have to put yourself in position to make plays.
Two of the top playmakers on the defense, Martez Wilson and Miami Thomas, are out with injuries. That has to be at least a small part of it.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 07:29 PM on Sat, 09/26/2009

I'm going to take another short break and then be back. Thanks again.

Cory from Savoy, IL — 08:11 PM on Sat, 09/26/2009

Is there any way Illinois can bounce back from such an embarrassing performance? It didn't look promising at all today, and Penn State is just as good, if not better than Ohio State.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 08:12 PM on Sat, 09/26/2009

Cory,

I'm back for one final question. Thanks to everyone for helping out tonight. We'll do this again after the Penn State game.
The Illini face a monumental task against Penn State. Playing at home might help some. It will be interesting to see how it goes.
