Talk with football beat writer Bob Asmussen after the Illinois-Missouri game

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 06:36 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

OK,

I'm back in the press box and am going to answer a couple of questions. Then, I'll take three or four every 15 minutes or so. I've got to make sure to write my stories for The News-Gazette.

Ralph Colton from Chicago , IL — 06:37 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

I'm going to keep saying it until everyone realizes that Playing Bend but don't break defense will have a team lose. Ron Zook will be fired because of his unwillingness to put pressure on teams. Either by blitz or by having the corners play bump and run. The Bears and Illini will have bad years as long as they play Cover two. You play cover 2 when u are up on a team by three scores not when the score is even or close. Please don't blame the defenders on the team. Blame Zook. Since he is responsible as you all like to say for this Philosophy. Defense is a mentality not option. Cover 2 is not part of that defensive mentality. Just remember my name because I will say this week in and week out. Also it's time we get a defensive Coordinator. They also need a motivation specialist.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 06:38 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Ralph,

I've heard that a lot lately about the defense.
On the defensive coordinator, it's Ron Zook. Dan Disch and Curt Mallory are doing what they are told to do and what they are trained to do. But they are not the ones who designed the defense.

Dan from Urbana, IL — 06:38 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

whats the word on Benn?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 06:39 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Dan,

He's got a sprained ankle. I'm guessing he won't play next week, even though he'll want to. That will give him until Sept. 26 to get ready for his next game.
A receiver on a bad wheel, even Benn, won't be much of a receiver.

Tom from Urbana, IL — 06:39 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Bob,

I think the questions about the defense still need to be answered

Secondary didnt have a good day

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 06:40 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Tom,

The coaches and players admitted the secondary struggled. A lot. To his credit, Donsay Hardeman came into the postgame interview session and ripped himself. Impressive job of standing up. But he had a bad game.

Brian from Urbana, IL — 06:40 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Bob,

with the depth we have at WR/TE, why not take more chances down the field?

Open up the offense

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 06:41 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Brian,

Ron Zook was asked that and he said they wanted to control the ball and control the clock, which is the way Mike Schultz coached at TCU. I think Juice had time to throw the ball down the field too. Not much pressure from the Missouri defense, probably intentional.

Dave C. from Champaign, IL — 06:41 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Bob,
Any update on Benn? Did Fayson have to leave with an injury too?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 06:42 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Dave,
Benn is out with a sprained ankle. I'm guessing the return is for Ohio State.

Fayson left with cramps and had to have IV fluids in the locker room.

daron from carterville, il — 06:42 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

What is the explaination for the utterly flat, uninspired play of this team? How do they not get up for this game?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 06:43 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Daron,

That's the question everyone will be asking for the next week. And beyond. Maybe it's partly mental. Maybe falling behind Missouri sends the team into a panic mode. It's like a reverse of the basketball series.
Illinois has to force turnovers against Missouri and can't do it. Lose the turnover battle, lose the game.

JE from decatur, IL — 06:43 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Do you think we will we ever have a defense that isnt soft? Do you think we will win more than one game in the big ten this year after the embarassment with MU?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 06:44 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

JE,

The initial reaction will be that Illinois is looking at a 4-8 season. But remember the rest of the Big Ten struggled on Saturday and they weren't playing teams as good as Missouri. The Ohio State, Minnesota and Iowa fans have to be going nuts.

Dave C. from Champaign, IL. — 06:44 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Bob,
What did you think of Martez Wilson's and other linebackers play?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 06:45 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Dave,

Early, I told Paul Klee that Martez seemed to be making a lot of plays. I don't have the stats yet, but I'm guessing there were a high number of tackles.
hard to grade the rest of the linebackers. Nothing special. But nothing glaringly bad. The secondary takes most of the heat for this game. And the offense.

Ralph Colton from Chicago , Illinois — 06:46 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Zook needs to make dramtic changes and make them now. This season can still be successul but He needs to Make Disch the Defensive Coordinator and allow him to play Defense his way. He also needs to choose a starting RB and He also needs to be more into the game and firery himself.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 06:47 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Ralph,

I don't expect any drastic changes. Defense the Disch way might be the same as defense the Zook way. Dan Disch learned from and coached under Zook. He isn't going to do something different. I think the running back position will be in flux the rest of the month.
And I think Zook is fiery, but he couldn't do anything about Saturday's game.

Chris from Chicago, Illinois — 06:47 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Do you think we can get 6 wins and beat a MAC team in a bowl game this season or do we look like a terrible, bowless team?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 06:48 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Chris,

I want to see what Illinois does in the next month. It will beat Illinois State. If it loses the first three Big Ten games, then a bowl game is going to be very difficult to manage. If Illinois wins a game or two against the Big Three, then a better season is possible.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 06:49 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Stick with me for a little bit. I'm going to start writing a story and I'll check back in about 15 minutes. Keep the questions coming.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 07:06 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

I'm back for a few questions. Here goes.

Jon from Chicago, IL — 07:06 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Referring to what you stated Zook said in post-game: How can Zook justify attempting to "control the clock" and not throw downfield when Illinois is down a ton deep into the third quarter (and beyond)?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 07:07 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Jon,

Great question. One I will ask Ron Zook on Sunday. The plan seemed to be to throw short passes. There are a lot of ways to come back, but you're right. It worked in the 2008 game.

Joseph from Mahomet, IL — 07:07 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Bob, aside from all the dissapointing aspects from this game, what is you view
on Zook's motivational tactics?? It seems that they wait until they get "smakcked in the mouth" and then they try to respond. IMO, I thought that they were lost after Benn went out and never returned. Your thoughts???? Also how many true freshmen played for us today??? thanks..

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 07:09 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Joseph,

Second part first, four freshmen played: Justin Green, Terry Hawthorne, Joelil Thrash and Michael Buchanan. You might see a few more in the coming weeks.
I agree that the team wasn't the same after Benn went out. He's a leader and they missed him. I'm puzzled why he didn't return to the sidelines.
Generally, I think Zook is a good motivator. But when the guys don't execute, no amount of screaming and yelling will work. Illinois played poorly. And I don't know why.

Reid from knoxville , tn — 07:09 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Lets say this team plays like this all season and ends up around 2-10. Would Zook be in jeopardy of losing his job?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 07:10 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Reid,

If Illinois goes 2-10, I do think there would be a hard look at the program's future. I don't know that there would be a change, but 2010 would be difficult.

Try from Chicago, IL — 07:10 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Bob, the body language on the field and off was very uninspiring. Hardeman on one touchdown. Wilson on the screen. Both were blatantly running at half speed. to me that kind of body language tells me this team doesn't believe. Strong teams have bad games but they dont quit. is this an issue with the players or coaches for allowing it?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 07:11 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Try,

You make good points. I don't know what is inside those players. Ron Zook wonderered if maybe they had talked to glowingly about the preparation. I don't think that's it, but you never know.
I did notice some guys were hanging their heads a little bit, especially after the long plays. It's hard when you think you are going to win and see it going so far the other way.

Brent from Swansea, Illinois — 07:11 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

With a defense this bad, can you reasonably think that the Illini could go to a bowl game this year? I don't see any possible way. You can't teach team speed.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 07:12 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Brent,

I think Illinois can still win six games. And I think it can still lose 10 games. You will find out a lot about the Illini in the coming weeks, especially the difficult three-game stretch at the start of the Big Ten season.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 07:13 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

You are coming up with great stuff. I'm going back to my story real quick. I'll check back in 15 minutes.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 07:38 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

I'm back for a while. The paper can wait. You all are more important.

I'm going to get to a bunch of questions for the next 30 minutes or so.

Joseph from Mahomet , IL — 07:38 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Bob , Your thoughts on new OC Mike Schultz's game-plan or lack there of one. I honestly don't remember the Illini trying anything vertical at all, which is especially surprising considering the way that they were manhandled today. Obviously the plan is going to change when your #1 wideout is gone, as well as 2 of your top 3 RB's, but with all the "depth" that we have heard about this year at WR.etc..it wasnt apparent today. Thoughts??

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 07:40 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Joseph,

Mike Schultz said he scripts the first 10 to 12 plays of the game. It was clear Illinois wanted to keep possession with short passes and runs. To me, the offense was most effective in the option. And that might be the case all year.
I'm going to assume that Mike Schultz didn't come up with the game plan on his own. It was a group effort. The lack of deep passes was puzzling. The coaches are with the players all of the time and know what works best. And having Benn out had to changed some of the calls.

Tim from Dallas, Tx — 07:40 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Why are we seeing McGee for bits of time and not Charest?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 07:42 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Tim,

There is a package for Eddie because of his ability to run and catch passes. That package wouldn't work as well for Jacob.
I expected Illinois to show its version of the wildcat offense early, just to get future opponents thinking about it. But the way it worked Saturday, teams might want Illinois to try it.

Jimmy from Dallas, TX — 07:42 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Bob, seems like the same old problems as last year. Soft coverage, key mistakes, turnovers and bad special teams. I suppose there's still time to rescue the season, but this a terrible start for what has to be a critical season for Zook. At least the B10 looks even weaker than imagined.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 07:43 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Jimmy,

As always, good points by you. You're right, it's a critical year for Zook's program. If the team doesn't bounce back, the questions will be flying after the season.

Jason from New Lenox, IL — 07:43 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Will Ron Guenther ever be held responsible for the mess that is UI football?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 07:45 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Jason,

Joe Paterno has often said that athletic directors should only be allowed to hire one head football coach. He was mad at Rutgers for firing his buddy and coach Dick Anderson.
Ron Guenther is on his third football coach, though he inherited Lou Tepper. The inability to win consistently in football is his primary concern and he wants to see it fixed.
Frankly, right now at Illinois, the athletic director doesn't have much to worry about because of all of the problems elsewhere on campus.
Somebody should have tried to use some influence to get Blaine Gabbert into Illinois.

K. Foster from Brookfield, WI — 07:45 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

You must have your linebacker numbers confused..Thomas made a bunch of tackles. Wilson arrives late and stands around looking at the pile. Is he our most overrated linebacker ever?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 07:47 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

K. Foster,

Who else is on your overrated linebacker list? Thomas had 13 tackles and Wilson had nine.
I'm going to study the game tape when I get home and try to make a reasonable assessment of Wilson and the Illinois linebackers. With all of his physical skills, you would think his numbers would be off the charts.

Ken from Urbana, IL — 07:47 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Bob,

will you run down the injuries from today? And anything of them serious?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 07:48 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Ken,

Great idea. Arrelious Benn and Jason Ford have sprained ankles. Jarred Fayson missed time with cramps.
Other than that, nothing was reported during the postgame. I'll check with Ron Zook on Sunday to see if anybody else is questionable for next week.

Gary from St. Louis, Mo — 07:48 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Walking into halftime with timeouts? Why didn't Zook use any of his timeouts to set up a chance for IL to score at the end of the first half? That just looked like poor poor clock management. How does Zook explain that?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 07:50 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

Gary,

I was thinking the same thing. Missouri had timeouts, so the clock wasn't going to run out before it kicked a field goal.
We didn't ask Zook about the clock management, but I will Sunday.
Illinois did change the way it handles the opening call, taking the ball instead of deferring. I would always want the ball.

Bob from Wheaton, IL — 07:50 PM on Sat, 09/05/2009

How can you let a quarterback starting his first game go 25 for 33? Other than very early there was little pressure placed on Gabbert so he didn't make rookie mistakes, and the safety play was awful no matter who was in.
Is there any hope they can turn this around?
Also, thank goodness this series is almost over. Hopefully we can schedule a home game with a Northern Iowa type team as an opener so if the team has a rough start there is some room for error.
