Talk with Illinois football beat writer Bob Asmussen
Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:59 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Welcome back to another chat. Before I get to the questions, I want to let you know what we are going to do Saturday. About an hour after the game (7 p.m. or so), there will be a football chat. This will give you a chance to vent about the game and ask any questions you might have. Feel free, if you want, to send comments in too. They don't have to all be questions. I'll leave that up to you.
I will answer a handful every 20 minutes or so for as long as they last. I'll be working on my stories for the paper, so I have to take time for that.
Let's get to this week's questions.
Dave C. from Champaign, IL/ — 12:59 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Bob,
I read that the defense could be going with just 2 linebackers 70% of the time. Who is the extra defensive back on the field when they're in the nickel package defense?
Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:01 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Dave C.,
I think that number is very close. Missouri will be using so many receivers that the third linebacker won't see the field much. That will be the case for several future games.
The fifth defensive back will be determined based on the situation and the opponent. I think it will be some combination of Supo Sanni, Travon Bellamy and Bo Flowers.
logan from iowa city, ia — 01:02 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Bob i saw the depth chart was released i did not see nathan scheelhaase on it? So can you confirm that he will be redshirted this year. That is the only reason I could see him being left off. Also maybe fill me in on how he did all around in camp and if you see him playing next year. thank you!
Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:08 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Logan,
I've always thought Nathan Scheelhaase would redshirt unless there were multiple injuries at the position.
I thought he played well during Camp Rantoul. He's going to get better each week. And he will make a ton of improvement in the spring.
I think he has a chance to play in 2010. It's going to be Eddie McGee's job to lose, but I don't think it's a lock that he will be the starter.
J-Ran from Champaign, Illinois — 01:10 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Bob, love the chats. Is this the year we see Wisconsin take a step back the way we saw Michigan struggle last season? Other than Wofford and Purdue at home and maybe Indiana on the road, there are no real gimmes. The NIU game (OK, I might be a little biased) won't be easy simply because Wisconsin's starting QB, Scott Tolzien, has thrown a total of eight passes in college and was being recruited by pretty much only the MAC before sneaking into Madison. NIU gave Minnesota a heck of a game in last year's opener at the Metrodome and I don't think this game will be a pushover for the Badgers. Seriously, I can see Wisconsin going anwhere from 3-9 to 5-7 this season. Thoughts?
Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:12 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
J-Ran,
I'm with you. I have very little faith in the Wisconsin team this season. Maybe I'll be surprised, but I doubt it.
If you think of where the program was when Bret Bielema took over and where it is today, you'd have to say it's been a major slippage. Barry Alvarez can't be happy and I won't be stunned if he pulls a Bill Snyder and returns to the sidelines.
I think you are right on with the 3-9 to 5-7 pick. Maybe the Badgers will win six or seven.
Kevin from Chicago, Illinois — 01:12 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Bob -- how in the heck can Penn St. get away with having 8 home games on their (weak) schedule? Even if they go undefeated I can't see them deserving a BCS championship nod over another one loss contender. I don't love Illinois' scheduling but I certainly prefer it to Penn St. Will voters remember the schedule as their undefeated season progresses? Thanks!
Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:14 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Kevin,
Because Penn State is starting in the Top 10, it will get in the BCS title game with an undefeated season. You're right, the schedule is soft. Especially for a program that has been so good in recent years. Voters will remember the schedule, but won't penalize the Nittany Lions. There are enough tests in the Big Ten for Penn State to justify a title game with a 12-0 season.
I don't think the Nittany Lions will win every game. I think Ohio State has a chance in State College. So does Iowa. And Illinois can beat Penn State in Champaign.
Charley from Bellingham, WA — 01:15 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Who do you predict will be the surprise star for the Illini against Missouri?
Do you think the game will be close? Or wide-open?
Btw, let me be your host for dinner in case the Illini gets to play UW up in Seattle one of these years.
Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:16 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Charley,
Thanks for the dinner offer. I think Washington is on the Illinois schedule in the future, but it is far, far away.
For the surprise star, how about Tavon Wilson. I'm guessing the replacement for Vontae Davis will have an interception. He might even return it for a score.
I think the game will be close and wide open. The Missouri offense is going to be very good, even with a young quarterback. I'm going to pick an Illinois win, 42-32.
Pete from Chicago, IL — 01:17 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Bob,
Good (though expected) news on Brent returning for Mizzou. Which other player on the Illini do you think benefits the most from Brent's presence? An End who now gets a one-on-one or even a RB to block him, or Martez who might have fewer lineman blocking him on runs?
Thanks.
Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:18 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Pete,
I talked with Clay Nurse about it this afternoon and he said the ends are thrilled to have Brent play. It opens up more opportunities for them to get to the quarterback. He also said Brent will be able to get into the backfield, too.
I think it was an easy choice for Ron Zook, one that won't get any public outcry.
Len from San Bernardino, ca — 01:18 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Bob
Why does it seem we are having so much trouble keeping up with all the commitments for next year. Some of the other conference schools have already double our commitments
Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:20 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Len,
Ron Zook hasn't rushed to get commitments in the past and won't as long as he's at Illinois. That worked last year, with Illinois landing Justin Green and Michael Buchanan late.
Also, for this class, there won't be a ton of guys. The number might even be in the high teens.
Michael from Joliet, il — 01:20 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Why is the sighn up for tickets flawed ? I tried 8 times and even tho my E-mail did match a message kept comeing up saying it did not , allso the security codes that you have to put in for verifcation are difficult to see if you wear glasses. I have a son that is a Illini fan like myself that lives in missouri it would had been nice if I could had at least had a chance to try.
Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:22 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Michael,
Sorry about the problems. That's the first we've heard about it. We had more than 500 entries and the winner was from Jacksonville.
You can contact Dick Detzner if you have any more questions. He's at ddetzner@news-gazette.com.
Pete from Chicago, IL — 01:22 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Bob,
Did you have lunch yet? Arby's has the 5-for-$5 deal going. Yum!
Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:22 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Pete,
Jimmy John's. Often my post-press conference stop.
Ken from Urbana, IL — 01:23 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Bob,
tell us more about the tv show
Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:28 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Ken,
It's called "Illini Insider" and it airs on WAND each Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and after the 10 p.m. news.
Here is what sports editor Jim Rossow says: "We originally thought it would be like our Monday night radio show, where three News-Gazette sportswriters would be on the set. But WAND decided to help out and give us two of their sports anchors to add to the mix. It's not the format we expected, but we're OK with it.
"There will be two of us each week. Count on appearances from me, Bob Asmussen, Marcus Jackson and Steve Kelly. Paul Klee takes over for Bob during the basketball season."
Terry from Davenport, ia — 01:28 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Bob can you give me an example of a play diagram that might involve Justin Green?
Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:30 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Terry,
I don't know how to diagram a play during the chat. Maybe something like this: --------- -------- ------- ------. The dashes represent Green running away from the defense.
I think Green will be able to handle most of the offensive plays. He has good hands and his speed is off the charts.
Doug from Wheaton, IL — 01:30 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
With Dufrene less than 100%, who do you think will get the first crack at the tailback carries Saturday? I would hope it would be Ford, but I think Leshoure could be effective as well. What I don't want to see is Dufrene out there at less than 100%.
Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:31 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Doug,
You've got it right, Jason Ford, followed by Mikel Leshoure. Dufrene won't play unless he is close to 100 percent. With so many options at tailback, there is no reason for the coaches to use somebody who isn't healthy.
If you made me guess right now, I'd say Dufrene playing is iffy. I'll know more tonight after practice.
Don from Urbana, IL — 01:31 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Bob,
maybe I missed it, but didnt see Hawthorne on the depth chart.
Will we see him at WR this weekend?
Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:32 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Don,
He is not on the depth chart. He will be at cornerback this season and will likely play soon. Maybe this week, maybe not, but soon.
I think he will be involved in the special teams. And I'm guessing he moves back to offense next spring.
Peter from St. Louis, Missouri — 01:33 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Bob,
The past few years you could argue Pinkel and Mizzou have had superior talent and experience than Zook and Co. That certainly is not the case this year. Although Mizzou is still talented, Illinois returns more star power and experience. Going into year 5 in Champaign, Zook still hasn't beaten Pinkel. At some point Zook has to come out and take care of business in St. Louis. It seems like every year the Tigers are ready to play from kick-off and we're not. On a bigger scale he needs to start winning the games his teams are supposed to win. Your thoughts?
Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:35 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Peter,
Of the five games Illinois has played against Missouri, this would be the second time Illinois goes in with an advantage. The 2002 team was coming off a Big Ten title and had a handful of NFL receivers on the roster. But there was a new starting quarterback and Illinois lost.
That's where Illinois has an advantage: a returning starting quarterback against a newcomer at Missouri. And that's why I give Illinois the edge.
I think you are right, Illinois in Zook's fifth year needs to win the games when it is favored. Like this one.
Scott from Chicago, il — 01:35 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Looking at the developing mess in Ann Arbor, it appears that this is a team fast falling apart. Teams and parents don't usually spill the beans like this, and certainly not on the eve of the season opener. Looks like Rich Rod is in deep doo-doo.
What do you hear?
Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:37 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Scott,
There hasn't been a lot of faith in this regime since it took over. Part of that is the panic of hiring somebody outside the Michigan family. Of course, it worked pretty well when the school hired Bo Schembechler.
I think Michigan needs to make serious improvement (at least seven wins) or it will consider looking elsewhere for a coach (Les Miles, perhaps).
JT from monticello, illinois — 01:37 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Isn't this situation in Michigan the tip of an iceberg if the NCAA wants to pursue things with a fine tooth comb. I've always assumed that the 20 rule was bogus in that it has more loopholes (voluntary?) than the tax code. If you count time the way most people do, I would guess that most kids on high school teams spend pretty close to 20 hours a week dedicated in one form or another to football.
Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:39 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
JT,
Exactly. There is no way to properly follow schools that break this rule. They are basically working on the honor system. And I don't think it's reasonable to expect the players to limit themselves. That's why the rule was put into place, but it doesn't work.
My guess is Michigan won't receive major penalties if violations are shown to have happened. It will probably be ordered to give the guys a couple of weeks off and don't let it happen again. Which it will.
Dave from Danville, IL — 01:40 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Which co-defensive coordinator is the one who does most of the work in setting up the defensive game plan for the upcoming game? I heard Curt Mallory
calls the plays and Dan Disch relays the calls to the team. I don't see where Mallory is ever interviewed by the press.
Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:41 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Dave,
Ron Zook.
It's his defense. Dan Disch and Curt Mallory carry out his plan. You're right that Mallory calls the plays down from the press box. But Ron Zook and Disch are both offering input.
Al Ryle from Champaign, il — 01:41 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Bob,
Missouri's offense plays with very wide line splits which really led to their rushing success in last years game. What chnges in the defensive skeem do you ANTICIPATE?
Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:42 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Al,
I think there will be more aggressive play from the linebackers. And I think Illinois will try to put a ton of pressure on Blaine Gabbert, hoping to force an interception or two.
Mike from Chicago, IL — 01:43 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Hi Bob -
Does Coach Zook know where Prater is going to school or will tomorrow be a surprise for staff?
Earlzo the Truth from Chicago, Illinois — 01:43 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Bob,
Since it looks like Kyle Prater will be announcing for USC tomorrow, who will be our WR targets for this next class? Who are realistic potential commits? Any change Prater will come to Illinois anymore?
Pete from Chicago, IL — 01:43 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Hi Bob,
What are the odds in the office of Prater picking USC over the Illini? He would seem to be one of those Big Gets that would keep other recruits' attention on Illinois. Do you think Chandler and Fiedorowizc (sp?) have the kind of name recognition to draw in other kids?
Thanks.
Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:46 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Pete, Earlzo and Mike,
I don't think there are many surprises in recruiting when it comes to the high-profile players. Even if the player doesn't talk to the coaches, they can still get word from parents, high school coaches, other players. And because Kyle is in an Illinois school, there are plenty of people who will be pushing Ron Zook's program.
When I talked to Kyle in the summer, I thought he was going to pick Illinois. But plenty happens in recruiting. He has had the other Illinois commits talking to him about the school. That doesn't always matter. If you dream of playing at a place like Southern Cal and they make an offer, you might forget everything else.
I think the current Illinois commits are working hard on the rest of the class. I don't think the names are the draw as much as the personalities of the players trying to do the luring.
Even if Prater makes a commmitment to Southern Cal on Wednesday, don't count on it being done until signing day. Plenty can happen between now and then.
Jordan from Louisville, KY — 01:47 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Bob
Hey have you heard any new news about Kyle Prater? Is Illinois chances improving or decreasing?
Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:48 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Jordan,
One reason I thought Prater would pick Illinois is because his dad doesn't like to fly. The easiest choice from a convenience standpoint is Illinois. Maybe that has changed. Or maybe the family is moving to LA.
We'll all find out on Wednesday.
Matt from Willard, Ohio — 01:48 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
How does the kicking game look?
Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:49 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Matt,
Improved over 2008. Ron Zook made it a priority and that move appears to be working. The kickers and punters will have no weather excuses on Saturday. The return teams could be much better with Jarred Fayson on punts and Arrelious Benn and A.J. Jenkins on kickoffs.
Shief from Champaign, IL — 01:49 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Missouri lost a large portion of its offensive power with this past year's NFL draft and graduation. I personally believe that will Illinois's strong receiving corp, strong quarterbacking behind Juice and Eddie, and emerging runners in Ford, Dufrene, LeShore, and even Green we can run up the score. Missouri's only big name seems to be Weatherspoon, I think that is his name, who called Juice out on Twitter. What are your thoughts? Do you think Illinois will have a Big 12 like offensive package that will outscore most everyone with the defense having important stops?
Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:51 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Shief,
That's interesting that you compared the Illinois offense to those in the Big 12. I think that's a good call.
Missouri got hit hard by graduation, but does have good players back on offense. They just don't have the experience of some of the greats in the past.
I think the place where Missouri got hit hardest was at tight end. There's no way, in my opinion, for Missouri to improve this season at tight end.
Matt from Willard, Ohio — 01:51 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Can you describe the fast paced and exciting life of a sports writer to me?
Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:53 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Matt,
Get up, check email, go to work, interview a bunch of players and coaches, write stories, rinse, repeat.
Not what you would call exciting. But it is a lot of fun. And I really enjoy getting to meet the athletes, coaches and fans. I'd be watching games anyway. This way, I get paid. I can't imagine doing anything else.
Charley from Bellingham, WA — 01:53 PM on Tue, 09/01/2009
Will Rich Rodriguez, Coach at Michigan, survive despite of recent problems? Is this a make-or-break season for him?

Which co-defensive coordinator is the one who does most of the work in setting up the defensive game plan for the upcoming game? I heard Curt Mallory
calls the plays and Dan Disch relays the calls to the team. I don't see where Mallory is ever interviewed by the press.
Dave,
Ron Zook.
It's his defense. Dan Disch and Curt Mallory carry out his plan. You're right that Mallory calls the plays down from the press box. But Ron Zook and Disch are both offering input.
Bob,
Missouri's offense plays with very wide line splits which really led to their rushing success in last years game. What chnges in the defensive skeem do you ANTICIPATE?
Al,
I think there will be more aggressive play from the linebackers. And I think Illinois will try to put a ton of pressure on Blaine Gabbert, hoping to force an interception or two.
Hi Bob -
Does Coach Zook know where Prater is going to school or will tomorrow be a surprise for staff?
Bob,
Since it looks like Kyle Prater will be announcing for USC tomorrow, who will be our WR targets for this next class? Who are realistic potential commits? Any change Prater will come to Illinois anymore?
Hi Bob,
What are the odds in the office of Prater picking USC over the Illini? He would seem to be one of those Big Gets that would keep other recruits' attention on Illinois. Do you think Chandler and Fiedorowizc (sp?) have the kind of name recognition to draw in other kids?
Thanks.
Bob
Hey have you heard any new news about Kyle Prater? Is Illinois chances improving or decreasing?
Jordan,
One reason I thought Prater would pick Illinois is because his dad doesn't like to fly. The easiest choice from a convenience standpoint is Illinois. Maybe that has changed. Or maybe the family is moving to LA.
We'll all find out on Wednesday.
How does the kicking game look?
Matt,
Improved over 2008. Ron Zook made it a priority and that move appears to be working. The kickers and punters will have no weather excuses on Saturday. The return teams could be much better with Jarred Fayson on punts and Arrelious Benn and A.J. Jenkins on kickoffs.
Shief,
That's interesting that you compared the Illinois offense to those in the Big 12. I think that's a good call.
Missouri got hit hard by graduation, but does have good players back on offense. They just don't have the experience of some of the greats in the past.
I think the place where Missouri got hit hardest was at tight end. There's no way, in my opinion, for Missouri to improve this season at tight end.
Can you describe the fast paced and exciting life of a sports writer to me?
Matt,
Get up, check email, go to work, interview a bunch of players and coaches, write stories, rinse, repeat.
Not what you would call exciting. But it is a lot of fun. And I really enjoy getting to meet the athletes, coaches and fans. I'd be watching games anyway. This way, I get paid. I can't imagine doing anything else.
Will Rich Rodriguez, Coach at Michigan, survive despite of recent problems? Is this a make-or-break season for him?
