Talk with Illinois football beat writer Bob Asmussen

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:01 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Welcome back to another chat. We've got a bunch of questions.
I'm going to Kansas City on Thursday to talk to Nathan Scheelhaase. The story will run the Sunday before signing day.
We've got all sorts of stuff planned for you leading up and beyond signing day in both the newspaper and on IlliniHQ.

Tom from Champaign, IL — 12:01 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Bob,

will whoever is hired as the DL coach also be the defensive coordinator like Johnson would have been?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:04 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Tom,

As I understand it, the new defensive line coach will not be the defensive coordinator. Though I don't have it officially from Ron Zook yet, it sounds like Curt Mallory and Dan Disch will remain as co-defensive coordinators.
I've done some quick statistical research and there are some surprising results. The Illinois defense actually gave up 27 fewer yards per game in 2008 than in 2007. That was a surprise. The points allowed went up about 5 a game, but a lot of that can be attributed to more turnovers by the Illinois offense in the opponents' territory and poor field position because of the special teams.
What I'm saying is that the defense, at least statistically, wasn't any worse than the one that got the team to the Rose Bowl in 2007.

Luke from Champaign, IL — 12:04 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Is it true that the DL coach from Cincinnati is coming? If so, do we know if he will be the coordinator to or just the DL and keep the co-cordinator? Or something else with the cordiantor?

Matt from Champaign, IL — 12:05 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Now that Larry Johnson is out of the running for the defensive line coach what other coaches are being looked at for that spot? Will they more than likely come in as the defensive coordinator as well? To me the co-coordinators is not working out and need to be replaced. Also, is anything being done about the special teams unit, specifically the coverage, such as new coaches, new schemes, etc? I think Eller is a good kicker and the lone bright spot on a horrendous special teams unit that contributed heavily to the sub-par season Illinois had in 2008.

Chris from Davenport, IA — 12:05 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

What is the hold up with Gilmore and how many new verbals do you feel the Illini will get from this weekend's visitors?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:09 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Luke, Matt and Chris,

From what I understand, when paperwork gets completed later today, Keith Gilmore will be the new Illinois defensive line coach.
He seems like a good hire, having worked for Brian Kelly the past six years and leading Central Michigan and Cincinnati to great success. He will help the program recruit in Michigan and Ohio.
Matt, on the special teams, ultimately the responsibility falls on Ron Zook. I believe he will spend tons of time in the spring and summer getting it corrected.
Chris, Illinois doesn't have a bunch of room for new players, but I expect a couple of new commitments.

Chris from Chicago, Illinois — 12:09 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Do you have any insight into why Craig Drummond all of a sudden decommitted?

Grady from Saint Joseph, IL — 12:10 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Whats the real skinny behind Craig Drummond's decommitment? I'm hearing on one hand that he's academically challenged, and then on the other hand I'm hearing his father has strong ties to Mississippi. Whats really going on?

Harry Potter from Champaign, IL — 12:10 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Bob, what's going on with Craig Drummond?

The HQ report says he "decommitted, but Illinois is still in the running". Chicago Sun-Times claims "Illinois is no longer in running" and the Chicago Tribune has Craig saying today that he is "still committed to Illinois" but is going to take an official visit to Ole Miss on Friday.

Your thoughts?

Matt from Denver, CO — 12:10 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Could you clarify the Drummond decommit? Was it because of uncertainty with the coaching staff or a change of heart? Does Illinois have any chance of getting back in on his recruitment or is it a done deal?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:18 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Chris, Grady, Harry and Matt,

Let me tell you what I think happened based on talking to some of those folks close to Craig.
First, he graduated early from Chicago Morgan Park with the hope of enrolling early at Illinois. When that didn't happen, he decided to look for other spring options, which include Mississippi, Syracuse and Michigan State.
Houston Nutt came to Chicago on Monday and had a great visit with Craig. Craig will be in Oxford later this week. If I had to guess, I think it is very possible he signs with the Rebels and enrolls right away.
However, if he can't get into Mississippi or Michigan State at the semester, then I think Illinois gets back in the picture.
The problem for Drummond is that because he is out of school now, he wants to begin college. The last thing the Drummond family wants is for Craig to have to stay at home for the next few months while waiting to go to college. But if that becomes necessary, they will do it.
When I talked to Craig, I asked him specifically, "Does Illinois remain a possibility?" He said yes. I know there are different reports out there about Craig, but all I can go by is what he said to me. I'm not going to take the word of another source when I talked to Craig myself.
One thing that I didn't put in the story was the answer Craig gave when I asked him "What do you think about the recruiting business?" and he said "It's pretty stressful."
We have to remember that these are 18-year-olds making life choices with a whole lot of outside pressure. I feel sorry for him in this case because I think he is dealing with the situation in the best way possible. He didn't rip the Illinois coaches. In fact, he had nice things to say about them.
And he made it clear that the departure of Tom Sims didn't force his decommit. But, from what I understand, had Coach Sims stayed, it would have been another selling point for Illinois. The two had apparently developed a good relationship.

Joe from Champaign, IL — 12:18 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Whats next with Drummond? Seems like he is arguably the most talented defensive player that we have committed.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:19 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Joe,

I think Craig will get through his Mississippi visit, then make a decision. If he wants to go to college now, he doesn't have much time to wait.
If he doesn't enroll in the next week or so, I think Illinois gets back in the picture.

Wade from Wheaton, IL — 12:20 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Bob,

Was the Eddie McGee at wide receiver just an experiment or do you expect the Illini to try this on a more permanent basis to get McGee on the field.

While we are definitely bringing talent back next year in the receiving corp, doesn't it make sense to at least give Eddie another shot at a slot receiver -- he is elusive with the ball.

Side note : Cordale Scott did play last season correct? He did not red shirt??

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:25 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Wade,

A lot depends on what new offensive coordinator Mike Schultz thinks of the idea of using his backup quarterback at receiver. Obviously, it gives the opponents one more thing to think about. That will appeal to Ron Zook.
I don't think Eddie McGee will be moved permanently to receiver. He is too valuable as a quarterback to make that switch.
Eddie is a talented runner and thrower. Mike Schultz will figure that out and find a way to get him on the field.
Cordale Scott did play in 2008 and will be a sophomore. I ran into him last week and he looks to have gained some weight. In a good way. I think he has a chance to be a very good player in 2009.

Grady from Saint Joseph, IL — 12:26 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Has there been any talk of finally getting a new logo on the helmets? Seems like this program needs to have a new design on the helmets. I say lets get away from the down years with a fresh image. Why not let fans send in some redesigned helmet logos and lets do a poll? Maybe the DIA might even embrace the idea!

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:30 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Grady,

I checked with Illinois ace equipment manager Andy Dixon, who told me a new logo hasn't been talked about. The team made a subtle change to the helmets three years ago, outlining the white letters with blue.
The ILLINOIS helmets have been around since 1989. It isn't easy to make a major change in the helmets because of all the different licensing and merchandise deals involved. Making changes to the uniforms is easier to do.
Andy told a story about how his alma mater, Wyoming, went through five head coaches in one seven-year span. And each new coach wanted to change the helmet to make his own mark. That can't be easy on fans or the helmet companies.
Schools tend to keep their helmet designs for a long time. Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State wouldn't dream of changing their helmets.

John from Urbana, IL — 12:30 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Bob,

not sure how the rules with the NCAA work. But would it be possible for one of the coaches to chat after signing day about recruiting and the team in general?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:31 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

John,

A couple of years ago, Illinois recruiting coordinator Reggie Mitchell did a chat with us on the day after signing day. It went very well. I'll ask him if he would like to come back to do another one. Or maybe we can one of the other assistant coaches. I will check it out and let you know what we have planned.

Nate from Moline, Illinois — 12:33 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

hey Mr. Asmussen,

Just wondering if you have heard anything about Patrick Nixon enrolling this Spring. There was a lot of talk that that was the plan. Thanks for your help.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:35 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Nate,
Patrick Nixon will not be here in the spring. That doesn't mean he won't return to the team in the summer. But he will not be here this semester.
The only two early enrollees, as I understand it, are Aaron Gress and Jamar Bass, who both came from junior college.

Tom from Urbana, I: — 12:36 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

What do we know about the new OL coach? Good recruiter? And it seems like Zook is trying to get into Texas with the two new hires on offense both having spent time in the state.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:37 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Tom,

From what I hear, Joe Gilbert has the coaching trifecta: Good recruiter, good technical coach and a good guy.
While he came to Illinois from Texas, he only spent a year there. He'll have more recruiting contacts in Florida and Ohio, both critical areas for Illinois.
Mike Schultz and all of his time in Texas gives Illinois a chance to recruit the state. I think it's definitely an area it will pursue in future classes. I t would be difficult to get in with many Texas players at this late date.

Eric B from Champaign, il — 12:38 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Is Appleton going to commit this week during his visit or is he going to wisconsin?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:40 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Eric,

That's the question everyone wants answered. I continue to believe that Appleton will sign with Illinois. He has told The News-Gazette that. Plus, he has current teammates and others in the Illinois class working on him.
I'm sure Kraig will want to hear what Mike Schultz has to say. If he is satisfied with the direction of the Illinois offense, I think he will sign with the Illini.
Give Ron Zook a lot of credit for arranging all of the late visits. Very smart move.

Joe from Urbana, IL — 12:40 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Bob,

is something going to be done with the horseshoe? The rest of the stadium looks great, hope they "jazz" up the east side more in the future to match the west side. But think the horseshoe needs some updating.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:43 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Joe,

Eventually, the horseshoe will need a structural upgrade. Those stands aren't meant to last forever.
It would be difficult to announce an major renovation now. But when the economy turns around (and it will, by the way), then the school can move forward.
I think you will see some sort of store incorporated into the horseshoe and more permanent restrooms and concessions. And I think the school needs to continue to improve the east side. Now is not the time, but maybe in a year the school can start making plans.

Matt from Champaign, IL — 12:43 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

What impact do you see Jarred Fayson having this upcoming year? Do you think that Cumberland will ever be moved back to a tight end role now that Illinois has so many new, young receivers and lack depth at the TE position (and because he tends to disappear in games)? Which of the young receivers do you see having the biggest impact (Sykes, Jenkins, Hawthorne, Appleton, Scott, etc.)?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:47 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Matt,

I think Jarred Fayson will have a major impact in 2009, taking pressure off of Arrelious Benn and pals. If you saw Jarred in the spring game, you realized he is a talent.
I don't think Jeff Cumberland will go back to tight end. Though there aren't a ton of guys there, the returnees have ability. Cumberland works better as a receiver.
I think Terry Hawthorne will have a great impact no matter where he is on the field. After him, I'd go with Jenkins, Appleton, Scott and Sykes. All of them are going to play and all will get plenty of help from the double coverage drawn by Benn. We don't say it enough, but he is the best receiver in school history (sorry, David Williams.)

BigJim from Memphis, TN — 12:47 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

It appears 4 star football recruits are on the move away from the illini. Besides the change in coaches, did everyone take them for granted? It appears to be heading down the same path we had in basketball a few years ago.

Alex from Long Island, New York — 12:47 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Which current "commitments" do you foresee signing elsewhere on signing day? Drummond, Appleton, are strong possibilities. Anyone else?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:50 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Grady, Alex,

I would encourage you to wait and see what happens in the next few weeks. Ron Zook is a strong closer and won't give up on a kid unless he is positive there is no chance. Plus, in recent years he has been able to pull off a late surprise or two, adding talent to the class in the final days. If I remember correctly, Vontae Davis was a late commitment. That worked out well for Illinois and for Vontae.
So, don't be surprised if the four-star guys stick with Illinois. And don't be surprised if Ronnie Wingo decides Illinois is the best place for him.
While it wasn't good for Illinois to lose Mike Locksley or Eric Wolford, it happens to other schools too. Illinois has enough talented recruiters, starting with Reggie Mitchell, to make it work out.

Grady from Saint Joseph, IL — 12:52 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

I understand that DE recruit Michael Buchanan is now deciding between Purdue and Illinois. Is this true? Wasn't our new defensive line coach Keith Gilmore involved with recruiting Buchanan to Cincinnati? If so, does that help Illinois get Buchanan? If we land him does this take some of the sting away if we do indeed lose Drummond?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:54 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Grady,

I know that Illinois is heavily involved with Buchanan, a News-Gazette All-Stater from Homewood-Flossmoor. You are right, landing him would make the possible loss of Craig Drummond much less of a problem for the Illini.
If Cincinnati is involved with Buchanan, you can bet the defensive line coach (Gilmore) is playing a major role.

tracy black from macon, illinois — 12:54 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

I have an old friend from Iowa who told me a story about Tim Dwight. He told me about how he was a man against boys in high school. Because he went to a small high school he didn't get recruited. Even though everyone that saw this kid play new he was special. Illinois has a player they are going to miss on who is just that special. Dakota Getz from small school Meridian. 51 touchdowns, 6'5" 225, a qb. He is so athletic. He is playing basketball now and is coming off a 32 point 23 rebound game. His team is rated number 1# in 1a. Illinois came several times to see him but would not give him an offer. He has given a soft verbal to Western and visited Iowa Monday. If Illinois would offer anything he would come. Keep this post because either way I want everyone to know that Illinois passed on a future star and a great kid.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:57 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Tracy,

Thanks for the information. You're right, Tim Dwight was a great player both in high school and at Iowa. He played high school football in Iowa City and was considered a star.
We will follow Dakota Getz in college. I'm hoping you are right and that he has a great career. Our Bob Jones said he is a great basketball player.

Alex from Long Island, New York — 12:57 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

If Hardeman can't return from injury this year who would be our most likely starting safeties? I hope Bellamy moves back to corner and we give 2 new guys a shot.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:02 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Alex,

With the improved depth at cornerback, I would think Travon Bellamy will be an option for one spot. Others to consider include Garrett Edwards, Bo Flowers and Nate Bussey.
And, if the Illini decide to use Terry Hawthorne on defense, he will get instant playing time at either safety or corner. He likes to hit, so safety might be the more likely spot. And he will grab an interception or 10.

Matt from Chicago, IL — 01:02 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Who will play linebacker next season? Early predictions on starters/depth chart?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:05 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

Matt,

I'm going to finish with a tough one. I'm guessing the three starters will be Martez Wilson, Russell Ellington and Ian Thomas. They will be pushed by Aaron Gress, Evan Frierson, Justin Staples and any linebacker signed in this class.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:05 PM on Tue, 01/20/2009

I'm going to close it off for the day. Thanks for all of your great questions. Chat with you next week.
