Ask News-Gazette Illinois football beat writer Bob Asmussen about Camp Rantoul

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:30 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

Welcome back for another chat. We've got a stack of questions to get to. Thanks again for helping out with this. Your interest is overwhelming and I can't tell you how much I appreciate it.
So, off to the questions.

Mike Randall from Monticello, IL — 12:30 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

Hello Bob.
Maybe you have covered this and I missed it. But I will ask anyway. How does Illinois punting game look so far?
I think the punting game was better last year but there is room to improve.
Thanks

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:34 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

Hey Mike, good to hear from you,
The Illinois coaches are adamant that the punting has to improve. They are convinced that Anthony Santella got a huge boost in his confidence in the Rose Bowl. And his long snapper in that game was Tad Keely, who replaced an injured Kyle Knezetic, which is another plus.
Illinois was 92nd in net punting last year and that doesn't make Ron Zook happy. What I've seen so far at Camp Rantoul is better work from Santella, who is being pushed by Jared Bosch. The coverage teams will be filled with starters. I saw Will Davis working there the other day and Martez Wilson seems to be a fixture.

Jon from Champlin, MN — 12:34 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

Would it be possible for D'Angelo McCray to transfer back to Illinois in two years?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:36 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

Jon,

That's a great queston. Technically, I don't think there is any reason D'Angelo McCray couldn't transfer back to Illinois next year. Or the year after. But when you move from I-AA to I-A, it costs you a year. Plus, I'm not sure the Illinois coaches would want him back. They've moved on, brought in a bunch of young defensive tackles and are recruiting more.
It's going to be interesting to see the team's reaction to D'Angelo on Sept. 6. I think the Illini wish him well, except for that day.

Grant from Palatine, IL — 12:38 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

Hey Bob,

Looking at how the team has been practicing, what are a few things that are going to surprise us this upcoming season?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:40 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

Grant,

I think the main thing that will surprise you is the number of players the coaches use at the different positions. There is quality depth pretty much across the board and the coaches have made it clear they want fresh players on the field. That doesn't mean Arrelious Benn or Juice Williams or Vontae Davis are coming off the field much. But it does mean you'll see plenty of Jerry Brown, Miami Thomas, Jason Ford, etc.
And the overall athleticism of the team is the best I've seen at Camp Rantoul. Hard to believe how much the team has advanced from 2-10 in 2006.

Tom from Chicago, IL — 12:41 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

Bob, You guys do a great job covering the Illini. Keep up the good work. From your perspective, were there any "surprises" in the Rantoul scrimmage on Monday night on either side of the ball? Thanks.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:44 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

Tom,
Thanks for the kind words. I'll start with Will Judson and Michael Hoomanawanui, who had been playing well in practice and continued that work in the scrimmage. I thought both Jason Ford and Mikel Leshoure were impressive. They got more carries because Troy Pollard got banged up.
Not so much a surprise, but a confirmation that Martez Wilson is figuring it out. He seems to be in the right place a lot of the time. His understanding of the defense improves each day and he's going to be a problem for opposing offensive coordinators. It's a bad sign when your receivers and tailbacks can't outrun the linebacker.

Tim K from Germantown Hills, IL — 12:44 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

Who do you think will start at the safety position? Flowers and Hardeman?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:47 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

Tim K.,
It still looks very open to me. When you watch in practice, Curt Mallory uses all sorts of combinations. He isn't sure yet who will be the starters.
I do think Travon Bellamy will be one of the starters in the secondary. Does that mean safety or nickel? Could be both. I'm going to go on a minilimb and guess that Flowers and Bellamy start the opener, but that Donsay Hardeman, Nate Bussey and Garrett Edwards get plenty of work. Illinois will need extra defensive backs often in the opener.

Scott from Mt. Prospect, IL — 12:48 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

What's your take on the O-Line? Are most of those positions pretty settled at this point?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:50 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

Scott,
Assuming Xavier Fulton returns soon and is healthy, I think the starters in the opener will be Fulton and Ryan Palmer at tackles, Eric Block and Jon Asamoah at guards and Ryan McDonald at center. The next guy in appears to be Randall Hunt.
When the unit is together, it can be extremely effective. Eric Wolford has done a very good job with the Illinois offensive linemen.

Scott from Charlotte, NC — 12:50 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

Hey Bob,

Can you give us an update on Charest as far as any improvement over his first week in camp?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:52 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

Scott,
I thought Jacob played very well in the scrimmage, especially considering it was his first live work with the coaches off the field. He's poised and can really throw the ball. And I'll continue to point out that he moves very well.
Like all freshman quarterbacks, I'm sure it's difficult at times for him with all that is being thrown his way. But he seems to be handling it well. He also looks to be in command when given the practice opportunities. Not all freshmen are that way at quarterback, especially when there are veterans around.
He's going to be a very good player. And it looks like that could be very soon.

Gregg from Pittsburgh, Pa — 12:53 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

With Sirod Williams now out for the year, will Daryle Ballew and Reggie Ellis see more playing time this year?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:54 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

Gregg,
Definitely, the young guys will get more time. It seems like Daryle is a bit ahead of Reggie at this point. But there is an opportunity for both of them.
Sirod Williams was playing very well. Illinois will be very happy to have him back in 2009.

Detlef from Joliet, IL — 12:54 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

Bob, any word on the rest of the nonconference schedule in 2009? Hopefully Illinois isn't the only Big 10 team with 6 home games again.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:56 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

Detlef,

Preaching to the choir. Illinois should play seven home games every year, in my opinion.
I just put in a call today to get some updates on 2009. I have just two games listed: Illinois State and Missouri, but I believe Cincinnati is on the schedule.
We will run as much of the future schedules as we have available in Sunday's paper. We've got the Big Ten part through 2012, but have some holds in the nonconference schedule.
There will be a Thanksgiving Day game in 2011 at Memorial Stadium against Wisconsin. That's not a done deal yet, but it seems likely.

Mary from Seattle, WA — 12:56 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

Who's been the biggest disappointment so far in camp?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:58 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

Mary,
Other than Loren Tate?
I honestly can't come up with one. The freshmen, across the board, have been as good as advertised. The running backs are better than they were in the spring. The lines have improved on both sides.
Maybe point to the NCAAA Clearinghouse, which hasn't approved linebacker Evan Frierson's application. Had he been here the past two weeks, he would be competing for playing time.

Albert from Chicago, IL — 12:59 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

Bob,

How has Bussey looked at safety during practice? He stood out on special teams last year and seemed to have great football instincts, any chance he starts against Missouri.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:59 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

Albert,
Nate Bussey seems to be doing well in practice. He is in the mix at safety, but I'm guessing he will be a reserve in that game.
The coaches are happy with the numbers at safety. They just want somebody to command the job.

Curt from Orlando, FL — 01:00 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

How does Whitney Mercilus look so far? Will Big Ten QBs beg for mercy, but receive none?

Will he be ready to contribute this year after the loss of Sirod?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:01 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

Curt,
It's a great name. Like all the young guys, he seems to have his ups and downs. With Sirod out, all of the defensive linemen move up a notch.
It had to help Whitney to start school in the spring and to be with the team a semester early. The payoff might come down the road, however.

Warren from Frelinghuysen Twp., NJ — 01:01 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

Bob:

Which team do you think has the bigger question marks going into the Missouri game? Illinois at DT or Missouri at LT? Also, do you think the passing game will be much improved since last year? Missouri fans seem to think that they'll see the same Juice they saw last year. Of course, I disagree.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:03 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

Warren,
I'd have to say Missouri has the bigger question mark. The position is critical to the Missouri offense and the starter will be new. No way to guarantee that it is going to work.
While Illinois lost Chris Norwell and now Sirod Williams, there is experience back at defensive tackle with David Lindquist and Josh Brent. Plus, Cory Liuget looks like he will be ready to play soon.

Jesse from St. Louis, MO — 01:04 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

Did Kraig Appleton officially give his verbal commitment to Illinois this week? I read that he was going to have a press conference on Tuesday, but didn't see any follow-up coverage and Rivals still has not updated his status. Also, any updates on Ronnie Wingo? Thanks for the chats - In Zook we trust.

troy ray from st. joseph, il — 01:05 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

Has appleton gave a verbal or not, illinihq says yes rivals says no

Also what are our chances with the 5 star linebacker (Jelani Jenkins) from Lockley's back yard (maryland)
considering the playing time at that position.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:15 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

Yes, Kraig Appleton has given a verbal commitment to the Illinois coaches. IlliniHQ never said anything about a press conference, but did say he was going to call the Illinois coaches on Tuesday. Those were his words.
When it comes to recruiting commitments, you have to remember that they aren't binding. Plenty can happen between now and February. Coaching staffs can change, a new school can get involved, etc.
Go back to Jason Ford's recruitment. He gave a commitment to Iowa, then changed his mind. When I talked to him on the phone and he explained the situation with Illinois, I had complete confidence he was going to sign with the Illini.
Kraig Appleton told Jeremy Werner that he will sign with Illinois. We wrote that and we believe it. To me, there isn't a better source when it comes to recruiting than the player. His coach can also be helpful, but ultimately, the player signs the letter and goes awsy to college.
I think Kraig will sign with Illinois in February. We run the commitments lists in the paper and on IlliniHQ.com. We believe they are as accurate as possible, but we also know that they don't become official until February.
Jenkins has a boatload of great offers and Illinois is in the mix. You're right that there is playing time available, but almost every school can promise him that. The great ones get on the field early.
Mike Locksley has a shot at every player he recruits. I wouldn't be against him with Jenkins.
Wingo is an interesting case. I think he likes Illinois and I think he would be a good fit. Nathan Scheelhaase is working on him on behalf of Illinois, too. Though Illinois has a quality running back in the class, I think landing Wingo is possible.

Dave C. from Champaign, Il. — 01:15 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

Bob,
Do you know who the fastest guys on the team are? Have you seen the players line up and race or do you know what they're timed in the 40? I was dazzeld by Martez Wilson's speed at the Rantoul scrimmage. He's going to be lots of fun to watch? We're lucky for the rules that will keep Benn and Wilson here 3 years. Don't you think there's a good chance they'd be gone after this year othewise?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:18 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

Dave C.,
The players are never timed in the 40. I know that because I've asked. I think Martez Wilson is one of the fastest big guys. So is Will Davis. With the skill guys, I think it's Chris Duvalt, Vontae Davis, Miami Thomas and Eddie McGee. The amazing thing is how many more fast guys there are now than three years ago.
I do agree that the NFL would like Benn and Wilson after two years. Heck, they might have drafted them as freshmen. I like the three-year rule. So do the coaches.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:20 PM on Thu, 08/14/2008

Wow, another bunch of questions. Thanks again for participating. I'll be back again Friday at 12:30 p.m.
I won't have a chat on Saturday, but will do a live blog from the scrimmage at Memorial Stadium. You can send me questions during the blog at asmussen@news-gazette.com, so it will basically be a chat format.
