Camp Rantoul chat: 12:30 p.m. Saturday

Saturday, August 9, 2008 - 12:30pm

Ask News-Gazette Illinois football beat writer Bob Asmussen about Camp Rantoul

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:32 PM on Sat, 08/09/2008

Welcome back to another Camp Rantoul chat. It's a cloudy, cool day in my second-favorite city.
Before I get to the chat, I want to share what a bummer it is that Bernie Mac died. He was great in "The Original Kings of Comedy" and in the "Oceans" movies.
On a chat scheduling note: I won't be here Sunday, but will be back at 12:30 Monday. I've pushed back Tuesday's chat to 2 p.m. because I'm talking to the nice people at the Danville Rotary at noon. Paul Klee will handle basketball questions Wednesday.
Now, to your questions.

Hi Bob. Spud Dick's a good name.

I like the Packers newest team member that replaced Favre on the 80-man roster (and soon to be answer re Sports Trival Pursuit): Scorpio Babers. Hometown? Italy...Texas (Italy, Texas).

Speaking of Texas, do the football Illini actively recruit Texas and/or California? From my observation, it appears that Zook & Co. now concentrate on locking down the state of IL, look for potential recruits in Missouri, Kansas, Indiana, MI and PA and recruit very hard in Ohio, FL and the DC area. I know there had been a quarterback in Westlake Village (Thousand Oaks) that they might have been interested in last year and I thought one of the coordinators had TX roots? But how many players in camp are from CA or TX and do they recruit CA and/or TX at all?

Love and appreciate your chats.

ScorpioForPrez,
From talking to the coaches, my sense is they would like to do more work in Texas. Eric Wolford has worked there and has good contacts. But the coaches don't want to go into an area unless they are sure if they will have a fair chance to get players. Texas is tough because of all the in-state schools. Plus, Oklahoma and others make regular visits to the state.
In both Texas and California, I think Illinois will try if they have a connection to the player.
There are no players on the current roster from Texas or California, though Daniel Dufrene played junior college football in California.
Of course, before this class, Illinois hasn't recruited North Carolina. The school found a player it really liked in Jacob Charest. So, that state will be considered too.
But you are right when you point out the areas where Illinois seems to concentrate its recruiting efforts. I think Kansas City will open up more with Nathan Scheelhaase picking the Illini.

Bob,

Jeff Johnson was on WDWS last night and talked on the concern for next years middle linebacker position. Can you see who is being groomed for that spot next year and do you share the same concerns.

2nd question. Do you still have posters for sale at the Gazette from the Ohio State game from 2007.

Thanks!

Ryan

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:43 PM on Sat, 08/09/2008

Ryan,
FIrst, Jeff Johnson has special insight into the Illinois football program. We appreciate all the help he gives to IlliniHQ.com.
You look at the current roster and there isn't an obvious middle linebacker for the 2009 season (of course, the coaches are thinking first about the 2008 season). Brit Miller and Sam Carson will be gone after this season and somebody will need to step in. The coaches will first look internally for an answer. Maybe it's a guy who is currently at a different position. If that doesn't work, they will go get somebody, possibly a junior college player. Antonio Steele, though not a middle linebacker, should give Illinois fans hope that there is a guy out there who can help. And I think the Illinois coaches are looking for high school seniors who can project into the position.
Yes, The News-Gazette has posters for sale from the Illinois-Ohio State game. Email me at asmussen@news-gazette.com and I'll get you to the right person.

Bob
Thanks for the chats. Will you keep doing these after the team leaves Rantoul? When does the AP poll come out? Why was Illinois ranked by Sports Illustrated? SOrry for all the questions.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:49 PM on Sat, 08/09/2008

Larry,
I like lots of questions.
We won't do a daily chat after Camp Rantoul ends, but I be working into a daily chat rotation that will include Paul Klee and several WDWS personalities. It's going to be a really good deal.
I believe the AP poll comes out next weekend, probably Saturday for Sunday's paper. We will load it up on IlliniHQ as soon as we get it. I'm guessing Illinois is in the 18-20 range. The votes were due a week ago and I've talked to a few voters. They all have Illinois in their polls.
Illinois is No. 23 in Sports Illustrated. SI overrated Wisconsin, which it has at No. 10. What is everybody seeing that I don't see?

George from San Diego, CA — 12:49 PM on Sat, 08/09/2008

Bob,

Can you explain the process for a Division 1A football player leaving school early for the NFL. I believe it's either after the athlete's 3rd year or when the he turns 21, correct? Regarding Rejus Benn, when does he turn 21 years old?

George

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:52 PM on Sat, 08/09/2008

George,
I don't believe a player is eligible for the NFL until three years after his high school class graduates. I don't believe age matters.
Benn turns 20 on Sept. 8. He will definitely be here next season. Unless some Greek basketball team offers him $50 million.

redgrange77 (Nathan) from Arcadia, CA — 12:52 PM on Sat, 08/09/2008

Bob-
If a fan buys a ticket on the east side of the stadium, are they allowed to enter the West Side and view the renonvations? Or do they have to/allowed to walk through the horseshoe to get to the West side?

#2...this is a stretch, can you ask Juice if he ever met a fellow Chicago Vocational alum, and now dearly departed Bernie Mac?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 12:56 PM on Sat, 08/09/2008

redgrange 77,
Great question about the stadium. I will get a real answer for you later today or Monday. My guess is that they will want to limit the traffic on the west side to people who have tickets there. But you're right that you should be able to get there from the horseshoe. I think it would make sense to let fans in on the west. The area is going to have all sorts of history, with posters and murals. Everyone with a ticket should be able to see that.
I will try to ask Juice Williams tonight if he ever met Bernie Mac. He had met Dick Butkus before coming to Illinois, so I wouldn't be surprised if he knew Bernie Mac.

Dave C. from Champaign, Il. — 12:56 PM on Sat, 08/09/2008

How bout given us your best guess at a steady veteran, up and comer to watch, and overall best at the general postions of O-line, D-line, D-back, L-back, R-back, reciever and Special Teamer. I know it's just been a week of camp but I imagine you have some impressions.

J Todd from New Eork, NY — 01:03 PM on Sat, 08/09/2008

How is Donsay Hardeman looking? Can he contribute against Missouri?

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:04 PM on Sat, 08/09/2008

J Todd,
Donsay has had some really good moments, but he hasn't taken over one of the starting positions yet. He will contribute against Missouri. You won't know how much until two weeks from now.

Bob Asmussen (moderator) — 01:05 PM on Sat, 08/09/2008

I'm going to wrap it up for the day. Thanks again for thoughtful questions. I'll talk to you again on Monday.
