Illinois freshman Destiny Williams on Sunday was named one of 14 finalists for the U.S. U19 World Championship team, USA Basketball announced.
Williams spent three days in Colorado Springs, Colo., competing with 26 others for one of the spots. The finalists will return to Colorado Springs on July 9 to begin training for the FIBA U19 World Championship, scheduled for July 23-Aug. 2 in Bangkok, Thailand. According to USA Basketball, the final 12-player roster will be finalized before the team departs for Thailand.
Among the other finalists: Ohio State guard Samantha Prahalis; Stanford center Sarah Boothe, a Gurnee product; UConn-bound Kelly Faris, who played in Champaign last November with her Heritage Christian (Ind.) team; and South Carolina-bound Kelsey Bone, who considered Illinois.
The team is coached by Northern Illinois' Carol Owens. She is assisted by Florida's Amanda Butler and Iowa State's Bill Fennelly.
