My grandfather hit rocket ground balls to me by the hundreds.
When I'd take one off the chest, he'd say, "Who do you think you are, Stan Hack?"
The next moment I'd be dancing around first base like Phil Cavaretta. Then, I'd hit one out of the park like Bill Nicholson.
That's the way Cub fans acted in Olney, Illinois back in the olden days. Some still do.
When I interviewed with Mrs. Marajen Stevick Chinigo for the managerial job at WDWS and WHMS in 1980, she said, "We carry the Cardinals on our station. You're a Cardinal fan, aren't you.
I answered, "Yes, Mam, always have been." My mommy raised no dummy.
As I write this, a bunch of Cub fans are watching the Danville Dans play in that wonderful old ball park. During the 7th inning stretch they'll play the 3 in 1 and Chief Illiniwek's last dance will be shown on a video screen.
Do summer nights get any better?
