Illini volleyball coach Don Hardin has been steadfast in deflecting speculation about his rumored retirement following the 2008 season. No matter how many times he's asked by the media, the response is basically the same: He and UI athletic director Ron Guenther will sit down after the season to discuss the state of the program. If there's any announcement to be made on Hardin's status, it will be made at that time.

But others in a position to know Hardin's intentions aren't so tight-lipped. During two interviews this week, I heard references to the Illini coach that strongly indicate he plans to call it a career at the end of the season.

St. Louis coach Anne Kordes, who served on Hardin's staff from 1999 to 2003, will face her old team for the first time during the regular season on Friday. While discussing that upcoming match in St. Louis, Kordes referred to the strong start No. 19 Illinois has gotten off to this season ... and more.
"I'm excited to get to play against them," she said. "I'm more excited for Don to retire from a sport he's put so much into on a high note. I'm glad to see all his effort and hard work are paying off."

Illini recruit Anna Dorn also referenced Hardin's career plans while discussing the oral commitment she gave to Illinois last weekend. In the process, Dorn identified current Illini assistant Kevin Hambly as Hardin's successor.
"I feel at home at Illinois," the Munster (Ind.) High School junior said. "I think Kevin is the best coach for me. And even though he's retiring, I think Don is a great coach, too, and has created such a family atmosphere with the program."
