Every Monday during the prep football season, IlliniHQ.com will give a wrap-up of how Illini commits and targets fared during the previous weekend's games. Here are a few highlights from last weekend.
THE COMMITS
Future Illini quarterback CHANDLER WHITMER threw for 188 yards and three touchdowns to lead Downers Grove South to a 42-25 win over Leyden on Friday. Whitmer traveled to Champaign on Saturday to attend the Illinois season opener against Illinois State.
CJ FIEDOROWICZ had five two touchdown receptions (27 yards and 16 yards) to help lead Johnsburg to a 55-7 rout of Dundee-Crown on Friday night. The 6-foot-7 Fiedorowicz, ranked the No. 5 tight end in the country by Rivals.com, finished with four catches for 64 yards.
Defensive back DEXTER McDONALD, an Illini commit, and the Rockhurst (Mo.) defense bounced back from a 55-27 defeat to Hutchinson last week to defeat top-ranked Blue Springs 17-3 on Friday night. McDonald had three interceptions in Rockhurst's week one victory.
Illini commit MICHAEL HEITZ and South Fulton picked up their first victory of the season with a 41-7 rout of Unity/Payson. HEITZ, a 6-foot-6, 260-pound offensive tackle committed to Illinois earlier this month.
Illinois commit COREY COOPER were routed by rival Proviso West 44-7 on Friday. Close friend and USC commit KYLE PRATER caught two touchdown passes (57 and 45 yards) against Cooper, a safety, and the Pirates secondary.
Future Illinois offensive lineman ANDY GALLIK and Brother Rice defeated St. Rita 35-14 on Friday. Gallik, a 6-foot-2, 290-pound offensive lineman, committed to Illinois in June and was in attendance at Saturday's Illinois-Illinois State game.
Illini commit SHAWN AFRYL, an offensive lineman, and Niles West picked up their first win of the season with 36-6 victory over Maine East. Afryl (6-foot-3, 300 pounds) committed to the Illini in April and will likely play guard in college.
MARK WILSON, a linebacker committed to Illinois, and the Tallahassee (Fla.) Lincoln defense held Port Orange Spruce Creek to just 104 yards of offense in a 28-3 win on Friday night.
TARGETS - How some of the Illinois recruiting targets played last weekend
Offensive tackle SEAN HICKEY and Murrysville (Pa.) Franklin Regional lost to Ambridge 16-13 on Friday. Hickey has plans to commit to one of three schools: Illinois, Boston College or Syracuse.
Memphis (Tenn.) Christian Brothers fullback JONATHAN BROWN ran for a two-yard touchdown to help lead his team to a 27-0 win over top-ranked White Station on Friday. Brown, being recruited by Illinois as a linebacker, also led a Christian Brothers defense that shut out the White Station offense and held them to just 147 yards of total offense.
Shiloh Christian (Ark.) linebacker MITCHELL ROBERTS and the Shiloh Christian Saints defeated Tulsa (Okla.) Lincoln Christian 41-24 on Friday. Roberts has offers from Illinois and Tulsa. Read more about Roberts in Tuesday's Recruiting Wrap.
