Every Monday, IlliniHQ.com will provide a recap of the weekend's performances by Illinois commits and targets. This week, Brandon Paul kept Warren's season alive while Waukegan's season may be in jeopardy with Illini verbal commit suspended for one game after two technicals on Friday.
Class of 2009
Illinois signee Brandon Paul was carried off the court on the shoulders of his Warren teammates after the 6-foot-3 guard scored 32 points to lead the Blue Devils to a 69-62 regional title victory over Lake Zurich on Friday. Paul scored 24 points in the second half after going 2-for-11 and spraining his ankle in the first half.
Future Illini Tyler Griffey and Joseph Bertrand saw their high-school careers end on Wednesday. Griffey, a 6-foot-8 forward, scored 18 points on 7-of-16 shooting and hauled in seven rebounds as Lafayette (Wildwood, Mo.) fell to Hazelwood Central 69-60 on Wednesday. Bertrand, a 6-foot-5 guard, had 23 points and 10 assists as the host Warriors fell to Rochelle 77-76 in the regional semifinal matchup.
Class of 2010
Illinois verbal commit Jereme Richmond scored 17 points to help lead Waukegan to an 80-50 rout over Palatine Fremd in the Class 4A regional final on Friday. But the 6-foot-6 junior wasn't celebrating after the win. Richmond picked up two technical fouls - the first for shoving another player and the second for a controversial call made after the junior allegedly hung on the rim after a missed dunk. By IHSA rule, Richmond must sit out the Bulldogs sectional semifinal against Zion-Benton.
Class of 2011
De La Salle sophomore Dre Henley, a 6-foot-5 wing, scored 13 points and four rebounds to help lead the Meteors to a 51-43 win over St. Ignatius to claim a Class 4A regional championship on Friday. Teammate and fellow sophomore standout Mike Shaw, a 6-foot-8 forward had four points, 11 rebounds, four blocks and three assists in the win. Both sophomores have interest from Illinois, Kentucky, Arkansas, Indiana, Florida, Tennessee, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa State, Stanford, USC, UCLA, among others.
Illinois verbal commit Tracy Abrams had 16 points, nine rebounds and three assists but missed his last three free throws as Mount Carmel fell to Downers Grove South 46-43 in the Class 4A regional championship on Friday.
Rock Island sophomore Chasson Randle scored 25 points to lead the Rocks to a 70-54 win over Geneso to win the Class 3A regional title. The 6-foot-3 guard has scholarship offers from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa State and Bradley. Rock Island will play LaSalle-Peru in the sectional semifinal.
With Illinois head coach Bruce Weber in attendance, St. Louis Chaminade sophomore Bradley Beal scored 26 points on 10-of-20 shooting to lead the Red Devils to a 53-51 win over Parkway West on Saturday. Chaminade will now play in the Missouri Class 5 semifinal game against Rock Bridge on Saturday.
Sophomore standout Christian Kirk scored nine points as St. Charles West (Mo.) was upset by Miller Career Academy 54-41 in the Missouri Class 4 quarterfinal on Saturday. Kirk has offers from Southern Illinois and St. Louis University and has interest from Kansas, Illinois, Minnesota and Missouri.
