Rantoul basketball happy to have Britt back

Brett Frerichs has received quite the gift entering his first season as varsity boys' basketball coach at Rantoul High School.

As was reported a few weeks back, Travis Britt, a Rantoul native and D-1 recruit in the Class of 2012, has transferred back to Rantoul after spending two years attending Culver Academy prep school in Indiana.

"I think the main reason was he was homesick," Frerichs said. "He was anxious to get back home and play in front of his mom and his whole family. He also wanted the opportunity to play with the teammates he grew up playing with."

This winter will be the first time Britt suits up for Rantoul High, as he transferred to Culver following the completion of junior high. Although Frerichs hasn't coached him, he's seen Britt play when he was younger.

"He'll be a big addition to our program," Frerichs said. "The one thing that really sticks out is his work ethic and also his ability to play pretty much every position on the floor. He's a combo guard, but with his athletic ability, he has the ability to do a lot at all positions for us."

Frerichs said Britt measures in at "6-2 or 6-3" and about 180 pounds. He said one of Britt's biggest strengths was using his athleticism to get to the basket.

"He can create his own shot off the dribble, get into the lane. But at the same time his jump shot is developing and he can also play the point-guard position," Frerichs said.

Britt's recruitment is up in the air at this point. Frerichs said he doesn't believe there are any "solid offers on the table" right now but added that there's been quite a bit of college interest. It's been reported that Indiana, Dayton, Illinois State and Drake have shown interest among others.

Of course, Britt is only a junior, meaning there's plenty of time for things to play out.

"His best basketball is still to come," Frerichs said.
