W-League Update

I've been updating you fairly regularly about Ella Masar and her season with the Chicago Red Stars, but she's not the only player with Illini ties in action this summer.  Several current and former Illini are playing in the W-League, which was the top women's soccer league in the US before WPS started this season.  Several of the WPS teams were actually part of the W-League last year.

The most prominent former Illini seeing W-League action this summer is All-American defender Emily Zurrer, who is playing for the W-League team in Chicago, the Red Eleven.  Zurrer has also seen action with the Canadian National Team in several matches this spring.  She continues to excel, as she was named to the W-League's Team of the Week, released yesterday, for her goal and play on the back line in a 4-0 shutout win over Cleveland.  The Red Eleven lead the Midwest Division with a 4-1 record so far.

There are three other Illini on the Chicago roster, led by starting goalkeeper Lindsay Carstens.  Carstens has started four of Chicago's five games, according the the team website.  Current Illini Krystin Miller and Alexandra Kapicka are also listed on the Chicago roster, but neither has seen action yet this season.

Meanwhile, two current Illini are on the Boston Renegades roster this summer, as defender Danielle Kot and midfielder Jackie Santacaterina are both seeing minutes for the Renegades.  Both have played in three games, with Kot seeing 165 minutes of playing time, while Santacaterina has logged 57 minutes thus far.

If you know of any other Illini playing for W-League clubs this summer, shoot me an e-mail at bmoline@wdws.com.  I scanned most of the roster, but could have easily missed someone.  Thanks for reading.
