Zurrer Excelling for Canada
Former Illinois Soccer All-American Emily Zurrer hasn't yet found a job in Women's Professional Soccer, but she's certainly making the case that she deserves one. Zurrer played all 90 minutes for the Canadian National Team in a pair of friendlies against the USA in the last week, both 1-0 USA victories. Zurrer was singled out for her fine play in the match recap on CanadaSoccer.com.
Her former head coach got to see Zurrer's performance first-hand. Illini head coach Janet Rayfield was selected by USA coach Pia Sundhage to serve as an assistant for the two matches, played in Rochester, NY and Charleston, SC.
Zurrer has been hampered in her effort to join a WPS roster by limits on the number of international players on each team. She is currently playing for the Chicago Red Eleven of the W-League, along with fellow Illini Lindsey Carstens, Alexandra Kapicka and Krystin Miller. The W-League is the top women's amateur league in the country. You can follow all the Illini in action this summer through the Fighting Illini's website.
Rayfield will join me for a few minutes tomorrow night on Sportstalk to talk about her experience with the US National Team. Former Illini Ella Masar checks in from Chicago for a few minutes tonight to update us on her health. She had missed some time last month with a leg injury. Here's the current lineup for Sportstalk for the next several days as I fill in for the vacationing Steve Kelly:
Thursday 7/23: Jason Heggemeyer from the U of I ticket office about single game football tickets going on sale today, Steve Kelly's conversation with the incoming basketball freshman class, and Ella Masar.
Friday 7/24: News-Gazette football writer Bob Asmussen checks in with the latest on Illinois football, and Janet Rayfield
Monday 7/27: So much for vacation, as Steve Kelly hosts a special Sportstalk from Big Ten Football Media Day in Chicago. This special edition airs from 4:30-6:00 pm.
Tuesday 7/28: Hardball Times baseball blogger Craig Calcaterra returns to the program to discuss the trade deadline, then News-Gazette basketball beat writer Paul Klee joins me in the studio for the remainder of the hour.
Wednesday 7/29: First-year Illinois volleyball coach Kevin Hambly joins me in studio to discuss his squad's prospects for 2009.
