Jon Asamoah was at Monday's practice, but wasn't able to participate. Ron Zook said the senior right guard continues to suffer from a sinus infection, one that has cost him more than a week of practice time.
At what point do the Illinois coaches worry about Asamoah's availability? Zook said Monday there is time for Asamoah to return and still be able to play against the Tigers.
While Asamoah is out, redshirt freshman Graham Pocic has stepped in. A highly touted recruit from Lemont, Pocic patiently waited last season. Now, his opportunity has arrived. At least until Asamoah is back.
Even after the senior Outland Trophy candidate returns, Pocic won't be sent to the bench permanently. New line coach Joe Gilbert wants to rotate players and Asamoah will have missed valuable conditioning time. And a year from now, when Asamoah is gone, Pocic's time on the field this season should earn him a starting spot.
