23 days to 2009 opener

Grant Teaff is a smart man. And a well-respected former coach. And the executive director of the American Football Coaches Association.

So, when Teaff suggests that teams exchange a pregame handshake at their 2009 openers, we're going to assume he's thought this thing through.

The idea seems reasonable. Sportsmanship is something we all need to promote. People shouldn't be pouring beer on baseball players or shouting at the Little League umpire. We all need to learn some self control.

But what happens if at one of the games, a player or two decides they'll include a little talking with their pregame handshakes? And what happens if that talking turns to a push or a punch? So much for sportsmanship.

Let's hope it all goes well. In fact, the pregame handshakes ought to continue beyond the first week. We're crossing our fingers that the beer pouring guy isn't a college football player.
