No. 13: Cal

Why I like the Bears: Start with Jahvid Best, our pick right now as the Doak Walker favorite. He gained 1,580 yards last season and scored 15 rushing touchdowns. The offense should go through him. Quarterback Kevin Riley returns and is coming off a solid season. The top two receivers return. So do three starting offensive linemen. There are eight starters back on defense, including the entire secondary. Both the starting punter and kicker return. Jeff Tedford has proven he can coach at a high level and is 5-1 in bowl games. The nonconference schedule isn't overwhelming, with only a trip to Minnesota to worry about.

Why I don't: The top two tacklers are gone. Zach Follett was a pain for opposing offenses. He won't be easily replaces. The Bears have to play five conference road games, including trips to Oregon, UCLA and Arizona State. And there's the trip to Stanford for The Game. While Tedford has been good, the Bears haven't gotten over the hump. To do that, they need to beat Southern Cal. Close losses to the Trojans don't cut it.
