No. 6: Jon Asamoah, offensive lineman.

Why he's important: Unquestioned leader of Joe Gilbert's unit, he is entering his third season as a starter. Earned honorable mention All-Big Ten honors as a junior and should be a first-team candidate as a senior if the offense plays as expected. One of the anchors in the interior along with returning starter Eric Block, who moves from left guard to center. Underrated as a high school senior by recruiting experts, he has far surpassed expectations. A good bet to find his way into an NFL camp and onto an NFL roster a year from now.

Getting personal: RIch East product is friendly off the field but fierce when on it. Picked Illinois over Cincinnati, Ball State, Northern Illinois and others. He'll get to play against the Bearcats as a senior. Gave up his redshirt midway through his freshman season to get on the field in five of the last six games. Shaquille O'Neal fan ought to be happy about recent trade to Cavaliers. Showed his athleticism in high school, earning three letters in basketball.
