46 days to Camp Rantoul

No. 16: Mikel Leshoure, running back.

Why he's important: Sophomore will enter Camp Rantoul as one of the contenders for the starting tailback spot. He gained 126 yards as a freshman, scoring a touchdown at Michigan. But his season ended early when he suffered a broken jaw in a scuffle with teammate Jeff Cumberland. The broken jaw helped Leshoure reshape his body during the winter. He had an impressive spring performance, hitting holes faster in the past. Like the other tailbacks, he needs to improve his blocking to keep coach Reggie Mitchell happy. He has learned the speed of the college game, which will make him a better player. Thoughts of moving him to linebacker or fullback, which has been suggested in the past, are no longer possible.

Getting personal: Centennial product has a large, local following. The News-Gazette All-Stater picked Illinois over Kansas, Missouri, Wisconsin and others. Enrolled at Illinois a semester early, giving him a jumpstart in the classroom and on the field. Friendly guy enjoys the role of local guy who stayed home for college. A standout basketball player at Centennial, he gave up his senior season to enroll at Illinois early. Had a fun time following the Chargers as they won the state title in March.
