No. 18: Jeff Allen, offensive lineman
Why he's important: One of the surprise performers of the 2008 season, he reshaped his body and moved into the starting lineup at right tackle for nine games. He is now one of three players, along with Corey Lewis and Ryan Palmer, who will fight to fill the two tackle spots. Because of his experience in 2008, he should be one of the two. If he is able to continue the work from his first year and fill one of the tackle spots, it eases the pressure on returnees Eric Block and Jon Asamoah. Performed well in the spring, but still figures to be in a camp-long competition.
Getting personal: Work in 2008 earned him second-team Freshman All-American honors from The Sporting News and third-team honors from Phil Steele Magazine. Considered a preseason All-Big Ten candidate going into his second year. Early enrollee picked Illinois over North Carolina State. A four-year starter at Chicago King, he was also a standout on defense.
