No. 31: Ryan Palmer, offensive lineman.
Why he's important: Huge Ohio native started the first three games of the 2008 season at right tackle before an injury sent him to the sidelines. He recovered well enough during the spring to regain one of the starting spots. He returned for the final three games of the 2008 season and played as a backup to Jeff Allen. With the loss of two starters to graduation, his experience is valuable. He is one of the three tackles, along with Allen and Corey Lewis, who should see the bulk of the playing time.
Getting personal: Speech communications major is a smart guy, earning honor roll recognition during high school. Part of the growing contingent of Ohioans on the Illinois roster. A basketball player in high school, he picked the Illini over Wisconsin, West Virginia, Minnesota and Kentucky.
