No. 32: Jacob Charest, quarterback.

Why he's important: He might not play a down in 2009. That would mean Juice Williams had a successful, healthy season. And that's something Charest and the other Illinois quarterbacks are rooting to see happen. But, if Williams gets banged up, even for a play, Charest is in the mix. He looked sharp during spring practices, throwing accurate passes to open receivers. He has spent a year learning the offense and has done a good job listening to Williams and Eddie McGee. Having Kurt Beathard as the full-time quarterback coach has also been a good thing.

Getting personal: The only North Carolina player on the roster. His parents have repeatedly made the long drive from the Charlotte area to Champaign-Urbana and follow Jacob on road games. Confident player has developed a good relationship with the older quarterbacks. He's comfortable enough with Williams and McGee to joke with them, but also shows them respect. His younger brother, Nate, is being recruited by Illinois and others as a receiver.
