No. 34: Tavon Wilson, defensive back.
Why he's important: With the loss of Vontae Davis a year early to the NFL, the Illini need to be able to count on Wilson to take over one of the cornerback spots. The coaches showed their confidence in him during the spring, moving backup Ashante Williams to fill a need at safety. Playing 11 games in 2008 on both defense and special teams should be a big help. So should spending a year learning from Davis, one of the best cornerbacks in school history.
Getting personal: Another of the D.C. area players, he went to the same high school (H.D. Woodson) as current Illini Eddie McGee and Evan Frierson. A talented two-way player in high school, Wilson had 48 catches for 958 yards and 10 TDs on offense. He intercepted nine passes his senior year. Illinois won a recruiting battle over Boston College, Maryland and Michigan State.
