No. 39: A.J. Jenkins, receiver.

Why he's important: Part of the deepest position on the team. With Arrelious Benn drawing double coverage and Jarred Fayson getting his share of attention, the performance of the other receivers will be critical for the Illini offense. Showed big-play ability in 2008, averaging 26.1 yards on 11 catches. He had three touchdowns. Ten of his catches came in the second half of the season, including three-grab games against Minnesota and Wisconsin. He has a chance to contribute both as a receiver and on special teams.

Getting personal: Alfred originally made a commitment to Georgia Tech. But he reopened his recruitment and was snagged by Dan Disch, a longtime high school head coach in Jacksonville. Jenkins also considered South Carolina, Florida, Florida State and Miami.

AJ also dropped a couple of balls at critical times in close losses. The key to watch receivers step up will be who has the surest hands.
