After sitting on the bench most of his career at Illinois, Walter Mendenhall saw plenty of playing time in one season at Illinois State. Enough time, in fact, that Mendenhall earned a spot on the Missouri Valley's All-Newcomer team, which was announced today.
Mendenhall played in 10 games, starting the final four for the Redbirds. He led Illinois State with 796 rushing yards, scoring 11 touchdown. He had four 100-yard games, going for 225 against Youngstown State. He finished fourth in the league in rushing.
You have to wonder if players will continue to make the move from Illinois to Illinois State now that the Denver Johnson era is over. The next coach might not be as open to taking a player for a year, which was the case with Mendenhall.
The newcomer team was picked by league coaches, SIDs and media members. Because of the immediate eligibility of transfers from I-A, the newcomer team has the potential to be a talented one each season.
