It would be disappointing if it didn't happen so often. BYU, which won its game Saturday, should have moved up in the polls. Three teams ahead of it, Oklahoma, Missouri and LSU, got beat. That means the Cougars should have gone from 8-9 to about 6 of 7.
But not with this group of voters, who bumped Oklahoma State and Florida ahead of BYU. Why?
BYU is undefeated. Florida has a loss. The Gators didn't get beat by a power, but by 3-3 Mississippi. For that loss, no matter what they do against LSU, the Gators can't move ahead of teams that are undefeated. Period.
And why is Southern Cal so high? The Trojans lost to Oregon State. Those are the same Beavers who lost to Stanford, Penn State and Utah. The Utes are undefeated and eight spots behind Southern Cal, which lost to the team they beat. Makes no sense.
Would Florida beat BYU on a neutral field? Probably. Would Southern Cal beat Utah? Likely. But that isn't the point. The voters shouldn't be guessing what would happen, they should follow what has happened. And I'd like to see that BYU-Southern Cal game. Let's check out how the Trojans do later in the season against UCLA. BYU beat the Bruins 59-0.
We've got to fight for the non-BCS schools. Remember the Boise State-Oklahoma Fiesta Bowl. It can happen again. And probably will
