2 days to Camp Rantoul
For 50 days, we're ranking the most important Illini for the 2010 season.
No. 2: Martez Wilson, linebackers
Why he's important: The head coach has made it official: his star linebacker is ready for contact after having surgery on a herniated disc. Wilson was antsy during the spring and wanted to participate in contact drills. But the coaches followed medical orders and waited until Wilson was fully cleared, which happened recently. The biggest concern with Wilson isn't a physical one. It's how does he respond the first time he gets hit hard in a game. Knowing Wilson, you can't imagine it being a problem. But no two players react alike to a return from a serious injury. If Wilson is able to quickly get into past form, he will make a major impact on the Illinois defense. The guess here is that he will clean up on tackles and make enough plays to merit All-Big Ten consideration. The guy is also due a stress-free year after the neck injury and an earlier stabbing. Don't be surprised if he leads the team in tackles and ranks among Big Ten leaders.
Fast fact: With Arrelious Benn gone, no current Illini had a greater list of college options than Wilson, who picked Illinois over Southern Cal, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State,. Florida and others.
Tomorrow: No. 1
