2 days to 2009 opener

The Brock Spack era did not get off to a good start. Or, Bob Spoo's got them playing at a high level again in Charleston.

Led by former News-Gazette All-State Player of the Year Jake Christensen, Eastern Illinois pounded Spack and Illinois State 31-6 on Thursday. Christensen, who lost his starting job at Iowa, threw three touchdown passes and could be on his way to a monster season with the Panthers.

Spack and the Redbirds have oodles of work to do before visiting Memorial Stadium on Sept. 12. Based on Thursday's results, you'd have to think Illinois will be able to name the score.

But the check will be good and the Redbirds will gain invaluable experience against a Big Ten team.
