3 days to Camp Rantoul

No. 3: Southern Cal

Why I like the Trojans: During the last eight years, there hasn't been a more successful coach than Pete Carroll, who is averaging 11 wins per season at a school that was struggling before he got there. The Trojans enter the season on a 10-game winning streak, including a Rose Bowl win against Penn State. Nine players are back on offense, including star receiver Damian Williams. The entire offensive line returns. Safety Taylor Mays turned down big bucks from the NFL to return for his senior season.

Why I don't: Quarterback Mark Sanchez is gone, even though Carroll thought it was a bad idea. One of these days, there is going to be a resolution to the Reggie Bush scandal and it could turn nasty. The defense lost eight starters, including the top four tacklers. The offense will have to hold the team together while the new starters on defense adjust to their roles. The schedule is difficult, with trips to Ohio State, Cal, Oregon and Notre Dame. We'll know after the Trojans visit Columbus on Sept. 12 if they are going to compete for the national title.
