It could have been the worst Media Day in Illinois history. Reporters passing out on the field during interviews. Dogs and cats living together. Mass hysteria.
Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed and the reporters were kept in the cool. Instead of having the players and reporters talk on the field Sunday at Memorial Stadium, the interviews were held in the new lounge area south of the weight room.
Dressed in full uniform, the players were happier about the experience. And the reporters were actually seen smiling.
The biggest crowds were around Juice Williams (of course), Arrelious Benn (obvious) and Martez Wilson (certainly). The latter talked for the first time about being stabbed last December. It was an interesting story from a player who is critical to the team's defensive hopes this season.
On Monday, Camp Rantoul begins. There will be no air conditioning. And the trees are about 20 years from providing much shade. Can't wait.
