Sometimes, nice guys do win. And Jon Asamoah is definitely on the nice guy list.
The offensive guard got a nice surprise Tuesday when he was named to the Outland Trophy watch list. Asamoah doesn't expect to win the award, which goes to the nation's top interior lineman. But he shouldn't be so quick to discount his own possibilities.
If the Illinois offense has a big season, piling up a bunch of points and yards, several players will get noticed. Including the offensive linemen.
Asamoah has been fun to cover during his first three seasons. He's friendly and easy going, the kind of guy who will say hello to your kids if he runs into you at a local restaurant.
While he will certainly take the Outland, what Asamoah really wants is a touchdown. He has never scored in his football career. Seems like the jumbo backfield, with Asamoah lined up behind Juice Williams, would be an easy way to get him into the end zone. He can always hope.
