We can all stand to be more open-minded. Maybe we should listen to our friends about politics. Or religion. Or directions.

Hey, wait a minute, that last one is a taboo subject at most parties I go to. Talk all you want about politics and religion, but directions are personal. In Monday's paper, I wrote about my favorite way to get to Camp Rantoul. Even though there are about 30 options, I'm stubborn when it comes to the way to get somewhere. Can't really explain it.

But Dick Barnes, the longtime Illinois sports information director who is now the football team's Web site coordinator, issued me a challenge. "Try this way," Dick said, handing my a small sheet of paper with easy to read directions.

So, Wednesday morning at about 6:30 a.m., I went Barnes' way. And liked it. And will do it again. It's a bit off my old path and could use some modification. But it's something new.

Thanks, Dick. Now, I realize change doesn't hurt after all. It can actually be a good thing. Now, if we can only get Dick to write a playoff proposal for the BCS folks. One with easy to read directions.
