No. 35: Travon Bellamy, defensive back.

Why he's important: Is he a cornerback? Is he a safety? Is he a nickel? Actually, Bellamy can play all three, which adds to his value on Ron Zook's defense. He started 11 games at safety in 2008, finishing tied for fourth on the team with 53 tackles. Linebacker Martez Wilson is the only returnee with more stops. Bellamy's combination of skills as a run stopper and pass defender gives Dan Disch and Curt Mallory more flexibility. The key for Bellamy is staying healthy.

Getting personal: After playing in 11 games as a freshman in 2006, Bellamy missed the 2007 season with a shoulder injury. He returned an interception 41 yards against Wisconsin for a touchdown. One of the D.C. area players on the Illinois roster, the Greenbelt (Md.) Eleanor Roosevelt star had 33 interceptions during his high school career.
