59 days to Camp Rantoul
No. 29: Supo Sanni, defensive back.
Why he's important: Former Homewood-Flossmoor standout is competing for one of the starting spots at safety. Played well in the spring, helping his chances for more playing time in 2009. Didn't redshirt as a freshman, playing in all 12 games. The bulk of his work was on special teams, a role that will continue in 2009. He should significantly increase his tackle total (nine). With the uncertainty of Donsay Hardeman's return, improved play from Sanni is a must if the defense wants to improve.
Getting personal: Former News-Gazette All-Stater is one of two players from his high school class on the Illini roster, joining linebacker Russell Ellington. He was hoping he would get to spend at least one spring practice day at Homewood-Flossmoor, but the schedule didn't work out. Illinois coaches will continue to try to have a workout at H-F. A talented two-way player in high school, he picked the Illini over Iowa, West Virginia, Michigan State, Oregon and others.
