No. 14: Eddie McGee, quarterback.

Why he's important: It's one of those things you aren't supposed to talk about, especially around coaches. But, like it or not, quarterbacks sometimes get hurt. If that happens at Illinois, the coaches should feel pretty good about the guy coming in off the bench. In two seasons as Juice Williams' backup, McGee has played in 15 games, throwing 64 passes for 503 yards and two touchdowns. McGee might be a better runner than Williams, averaging 5.2 yards on 45 carries with two touchdowns. McGee has added to his value by playing some at receiver, which is a headache for opposing defensive coaches. Besides preparing for the talented receiver they also have to worry about him throwing option passes.

Getting personal: Though he isn't the starter, he has taken a leadership role with both the quarterbacks and rest of the team. He is helping organize the summer workouts for the offense. Figures to be the leader to replace Williams as the starting quarterback in 2010, though he will get strong competition from Jacob Charest and Nathan Scheelhaase. Has impressed his coaches and teammates by willingness to try another position.
