73 days to Camp Rantoul

No. 43: Garrett Edwards, defensive back

Why he's important: Like fellow safety Bo Flowers, he offers experience at a position where it's limited. He started five games in 2008 and had 20 tackles. He finished the season well, recording a career-best six tackles against Northwestern. And he kept up the good work in the spring. The coaches will use him. How much might depend on how well he pratices at Camp Rantoul.

Getting personal: If the Illini get in a pinch at quarterback, they might consider the former News-Gazette All-Stater. He was a two-way standout at Downers Grove North, helping his team to a state title. He was also a star returner, bringing back three punts and three kickoffs for touchdowns.
