70 days to Camp Rantoul
No. 40: Justin Staples, linebacker.
Why he's important: There are still plenty of questions at his position. Martez Wilson will certainly be on the field against Missouri, but the other spots remain unclear. Going into the 2008 season, the Illinois coaches thought Staples might be able to contribute immediately. It didn't happen. Instead, he redshirted, which will be good for the Illini down the road. He had a chance to show his talents during the spring and another month in August to move up the list. He's got the size and talent to be a major contributor.
Getting personal: Part of the growing Ohio contingent on the team, he is from Lakewood. That's about 80 miles from Ron Zook's hometown of Loudonville. He had several college options, including Big Ten schools Indiana, Michigan State, Northwestern and Purdue. The Big East was also after him, with offers coming from UConn, Pitt and Syracuse.
