BCS? What

Bob A. is correct with this one.  What is the point of this system?  Don't give me the 'too many games' or' we got to work around finals' garbage.  These kids play their hearts out only to get punched in the face by the BSC.  Once again, there are a number of things wrong with system, and we now have matchups that make me at least scratch my head.

Let's look at all the one-loss teams.

(1) Oklahoma – lost to #5 Texas 45-35 on neutral field

(4)Texas – lost 39-33 @ #7 Texas Tech on a miracle play towards the end of the game.

(3)Florida – lost 31-30 vs. Ole Miss

(63)Alabama – lost to #4 Florida 31-20 on a neutral field

(67)USC – lost @ Oregon State 37-31

(50)Penn State – lost @ Iowa 24-23

(11)Texas Tech – lost @ #5 Oklahoma 65-21

Notice how I didn’t put WHEN they lost.  This shouldn’t matter at all.  What matters is strength of schedule and how bad the loss was.  The highlighted teams are the ones playing for a National Championship, and the number in parenthesis on the left is each team’s strength of schedule according to CBS Sportsline.

As much as I think Alabama got the shaft, their SOS hurt them.  It wasn’t their fault though.  Every ranked team they played outside of Florida went on to have disappointing seasons. (#9 Clemson, #3 Georgia, #16 LSU).  Also they are hurt by the fact their loss came to Florida, who ultimately does deserve a shot.  At the same time, I have a hard time giving a national title shot to a team that played the Citadel.

Texas should be in the big game, period.  Their strength of schedule is high enough, and they beat the team that is going in their place on a neutral field.  What hurt them was Oklahoma scoring 60+ points in their final five games, and Texas struggling against Baylor.  The only way this shouldn’t matter is if these teams played head to head.  Wait a minute, they did…and Texas won by 10.

I don’t like USC one bit.  It isn’t just because of they way they kicked out butt last year, but it is because I feel they are rated a lot higher than they should be.  The Pac-10 is not that good.  In fact, it is do down that Oregon State almost won the thing.  You also got teams like Washington and Washington St who would lose to any of the Illinois state football champions.  Heck, even Stanford was completive in this conference.  USC should have blown the doors off of every team they played, but they didn’t.  Couple that with there mediocre SOS and you have an overrated team that is rated in the top 10 based on popularity.  I want Penn State to win so bad in the Rose Bowl, but once again USC has a home game for a bowl game.  Stupid.

Texas Tech has a pretty strong argument as well for a National Title bid.  What hurts them is how bad they lost @ Oklahoma.  Losing to OU isn’t bad, but losing by 44 is, and that alone knocked them out.  Penn State didn’t play a strong enough schedule to get a shot, and their loss isn’t too great either.  Their loss and USC’s loss aren’t too good.

Florida’s loss is awful.  By far it’s the worse loss on here.  At home, vs. Ole Miss.  I don’t care about the SOS in their case, because of how bad their loss is.  It isn’t USC-Stanford from a year ago, but it isn’t pretty.

So who should play for a national title?  Oklahoma vs. Texas!!!  The two best teams from the best conference in the country (no, it isn’t the SEC).  Both have strong strength of schedules, both have understandable losses, and both have been pretty consistent all year.  There is just one problem; they can’t play each other.  This is why a playoff is needed.  Imagine the anticipation for these games.  These seven teams plus #7 Utah would put on an awesome show that would draw some of the largest audiences in college football history.  Instead, we are stuck with this garbage formula.

Until this is fixed, college football will continue to be only sport that starts out awesome and slowly gets dumb in the end.  For those of you who think they way we do it now is fine…really?  I bet there isn’t a Texas fan who likes the BCS right now, and that is understandable.  The main argument I hear is with the BCS, the regular season turns into a playoff.  If this were the case, Utah and Boise State should be playing for the national title.  They are the only two teams who haven’t been eliminated yet.
