Weber on Illini's depth
I get this question a lot - How will the Illinois coaching staff handle a team that appears to have much better depth than in recent years? Bruce Weber tells me that was one of the talking points in a staff meeting Tuesday, before the coaches hit the road for the second July recruiting swing.
"It's something we brought up as a staff. I hope it's something we can use. I might not have a choice (but to go deeper into the bench)," Weber said from Las Vegas. "I think we have a lot of versatile players. We have some depth. Now we have to figure out a way to use it. The big key is - and it's up to me - is keeping them confident and playing enough minutes.
"But also, even the older guys, instead of wanting to play 38 minutes, if they can get a lot done in 28-30 minutes, and give it their all where they need to come out, that's really going to help us out, too. Then we can get the other guys in for 10 or 12 minutes. Then we'll have great depth as a team. That can become a strength for us - that depth and continuing to bring guys at you."
More on the Illini rotation in Klee's Corner later this week.
I think coach is just more comfortable with a short rotation, plus managing minutes can take away from normal game coaching. I think the minute management should be delegated to an assistant who would be responsible for monitoring minutes and making suggestions to Bruce which he could take or reject.
