Roger Powell returns to C-U

Spoke this morning with Roger Powell Jr., who was on a break between workouts at the Bulls' training facility. The former Illini said he will return to C-U on Friday for a speaking engagement at Stone Creek Community Church in Urbana. His presentation begins at 6 p.m. and is open to everyone.

The reason for Powell's return: he wants to educate the C-U area on his leadership camp. The camp runs Aug. 3-5 in Naperville. (For more info, go to his Web site here.) It's a unique basketball camp and has received high marks from those that attended in the past. The leadership camp is limited to 25 participants. Each player is nominated by a parent or coach, and the deadline for nominations has been pushed back to next week. Some of the parents and kids who participated in the camp in recent years will be at Stone Creek Community Church on Friday night to talk about it.

As for his basketball plans - and I'm sure he'll address this Friday - Powell said he's hoping to get into an NBA training camp in the fall. He was with the Bulls' camp last year before heading overseas. Roger said he's almost fully recovered after suffering a gnarly injury last season while playing in France. He underwent surgery after breaking several bones in the left side of his face.

Wish I could be there to hear him speak. He's a class act and what young kids should aspire to.

I think he is not only a class act, but the classiest act we have seen in Illinois basketball in quite some time...
